A yet unknown threat actor wants to be the Robin Hood of the cyber-era, albeit with a twist. Instead of stealing from the rich and giving to the poor, this group forces the poor to give directly to the rich - by holding their precious data hostage until they do.

Cybersecurity researchers from CloudSEK recently discovered a ransomware strain named “GoodWill” that still infects companies, but instead of asking for payment, it’s asking for acts of goodwill against those less fortunate, all of which need to be documented and presented both publicly, and to the threat actor itself.

Share your thoughts on Cybersecurity and get a free copy of the Hacker's Manual 2022. Help us find how businesses are preparing for the post-Covid world and the implications of these activities on their cybersecurity plans. Enter your email at the end of this survey to get the bookazine, worth $10.99/£10.99.

Helping the poor

Once a company gets infected with GoodWill, it needs to do three things:

  • Provide homeless people found on the side of the road with new clothes and warm blankets. The victim must also document the act with photos and videos, add them to the photo frame provided by the attackers, and then share on their social media (Facebook/Instagram/WhatsApp). Screenshots of those posts, together with the links, need to be sent back to the attackers, in order to receive the second assignment:
  • Buy food for poor children. In the evening, five poor kids need to be taken down to their favorite fast food restaurant and allowed to order whatever they can. The steps for this task are the same - document, post online, share with the attackers. Finally, step number three:
  • Go to the nearest hospital and pay for someone’s treatment.

After all these things, the victims need to write a “beautiful article” about their deeds, and discuss how suffering an attack at the hands of GoodWill turned them into kind human beings. Once the threat actor verifies all was done as requested, the victims will receive the decryption key.

The researchers seemingly tracked the attackers to India, and although it cannot be absolutely certain, suspects this is the same malware group that operates the HiddenTear ransomware.

Latest Tech News

The leaks continue for Samsung’s upcoming smartphone, the Galaxy Z Fold4. This time, notable Android tipster Ice universe on Twitter revealed that the phone’s screen is slated to have a less prominent crease.

Ice universe claims the crease will still be there to some extent when the phone is unfolded, but at least it’ll be better than before and somewhat smoother. It may surprise you to hear that the crease on the Fold4 phone is such a big deal that a prominent leaker would talk about it as if it were a new feature. The thing is, the crease has been plaguing Samsung's Fold phones since the first iteration.

A consistent problem

The original Galaxy Fold launched with a plastic cover protecting the main screen, which had a very prominent crease. An annoying glare would come from the crease, regardless if you were using the phone inside or outside. Samsung has been working on fixing this design flaw but has yet to fully overcome it.

The Galaxy Z Fold3, for example, got rid of the plastic covering and replaced it with Samsung’s own Ultra-Thin Glass. The hinge was also improved upon as it was made to be more durable than before. Despite the improvements, the crease is still there, if not as noticeable.

It’s not like this issue is impossible to solve, either. Chinese tech company Oppo launched a phone in China that completely eliminated the crease. And if you go back a little further, you’ll find Motorola’s 2019 Razr phone accomplished the same task thanks to a clever hinge design.

Judging by previous release dates, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 is expected to arrive sometime during late summer 2022, so there’s still time for changes to be made and then subsequently leaked.

A year of leaks

We've seen a steady flow of Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 leaks throughout 2022, and things have only ramped up as we get closer to the expected launch date. TechRadar has a curated list of all of the leaks that have occurred this past year. They describe a foldable device with a 7.56-inch main screen and a 6.19-inch cover screen. The phone may also sport the same 10MP optical zoom camera found on the Samsung Galaxy S22.

Hopefully, Samsung can figure out the creasing problem in time for the official launch, so we don’t have to deal with an annoying line down the middle.

If you’re interested in learning about other foldable phones, TechRadar has a best of 2022 list.

A large number of General Motors (GM) user accounts have been breached, and their personally identifiable information stolen, the company has confirmed in a recent announcement sent to affected customers. What’s more, the cybercriminals behind the attack tried to redeem rewards points found on those accounts, for gift cards.

GM users have had their accounts compromised with a credential stuffing attack that took place between April 11 and April 29. This is a brute force type of attack, in which the attackers try numerous combinations of usernames and passwords until one works. Sometimes, the attackers will also try username/password combinations stolen from other breached services, knowing that some people reuse the same credentials across a multitude of services.

The exact number of affected customers is unknown, although just in the state of California there are thought to have been around 5,000 victims.

No credit card data stolen

GM also says that this means its infrastructure was not tampered with, nor compromised.

"Based on the investigation to date, there is no evidence that the log in information was obtained from GM itself," GM was cited as saying in an announcement.

"We believe that unauthorized parties gained access to customer login credentials that were previously compromised on other non-GM sites and then reused those credentials on the customer's GM account."

In the breached accounts, the cybercriminals got access to things like full names, email addresses, physical addresses, phone numbers of family members, last known and favorite locations, as well as search and destination information. Car mileage history, service history, and emergency contracts, were also on display.

Things like Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, credit card information or bank account information were not compromised, as GM does not store this data, the company confirmed.

Since the attack, GM asked its users to reset their passwords, and told impacted customers to request credit reports from their banks.

Just as with Zola, whose customers have had their accounts compromised following a credential stuffing attack, General Motors does not support two-factor authentication, BleepingComputer states. Users can add a PIN that needs to be inputted for every purchase, though.

“Businesses need to understand passwords are the vulnerability,” commented Patrick McBride, CMO at Beyond Identity. It is no longer adequate to pass the blame off on customers because their passwords were obtained elsewhere. Businesses can mitigate the password vulnerability today, by using unphishable MFA. It is well beyond the time to blame users for the failures of businesses that don’t use adequate authentication methods when they already exist.”

Hundreds of thousands of endpoints running Kubernetes API have been exposed to the internet, and so could potentially be vulnerable to virus deployment and other cyberattacks, new research has found.

A report from nonprofit organization The Shadowserver Foundation recently scanned a total of 454,729 systems hosting the container orchestration system, and found 84% to be accessible via the internet, at least to some degree. That’s a total of 381,654 systems.

While being exposed to the internet does not automatically mean compromised, it is the first, and most important step, toward a data breach. What’s more all of these are most likely the result of misconfigurations, rather than intent.

Implementing authentication

After all, a recent security report found that most people using Kubernetes don’t know exactly what they’re doing.

"While this does not mean that these instances are fully open or vulnerable to an attack, it is likely that this level of access was not intended and these instances are an unnecessarily exposed attack surface," Shadowserver says in the blog post. "They also allow for information leakage on version and build."

Of all the accessible instances, 201,348 (53%) were located in the United States, the organization stated. It stressed that companies with internet-accessible Kubernetes API servers should implement some form of access authorization, or block access at the firewall, to prevent possible data breaches and cyberattacks.

Kubernetes is a ten-year-old Google product for container management, both on-prem and in the public cloud, maintained by the Cloud Native Computing Foundation.

Commercial versions are sold by multiple software companies. Amazon, Google, IBM, Microsoft, Oracle, Red Hat, SUSE, Platform9, and VMware, all offer Kubernetes-based platforms or infrastructure as a service (IaaS) that deploy Kubernetes.

It is extremely popular, being used by most companies worldwide, according to market analysts Statista.
