DDR5 RAM has just started being available on mainstream computing platforms starting with Alder Lake and the Z690 chipset. However, if you've been looking to upgrade to this platform you should be prepared to pay a bit more than expected. 

According to Seeking Alpha,  memory manufacturer Micron has stated in an earnings call that supply on the components that go into making RAM kits is in short supply, which will mean a shortage of DDR5 RAM, which is in high demand now that it's available on mainstream platforms. 

And while the report doesn't directly mention the price of the memory kits you'll see in your local big box store, it's the same kind of thing that's happening with the best graphics cards, so you should expect to see prices go up until the situation improves. 

Luckily, supply is expected to improve in the second half of 2022, hopefully before AMD launches a competitor to Alder Lake - whenever Team Red is ready to do so. And considering that DDR5 memory is only available on one desktop platform right now, we would expect the situation to get worse, especially as DDR5 starts to become available on laptops. 

We haven't heard any word of laptops using the new memory standard yet, but mobile chipsets are never far behind their desktop counterparts, so we suspect we'll see some news on that front at CES 2022.

Security researchers have identified a new malware campaign that leverages code signing certificates and other techniques to help it avoid detection by antivirus software.

According to a new blog post from Elastic Security, the cybersecurity firm's researchers identified a cluster of malicious activity after reviewing its threat prevention telemetry.

The cybercriminals behind this new campaign are using valid code signing certificates to sign malware to help them remain under the radar of the security community. However, Elastic Security also discovered a new malware loader used in the campaign that it has named Blister.

Due to the use of valid code signing certificates and other measures taken to avoid detection, the cybercriminals responsible have been running this new campaign for at least three months.

Blister malware

The cybercriminals are using a code signing certificate issued by the digital identity firm Sectigo for a company called Blist LLC which is why Elastic Security gave their malware loader the name Blister. They may also be operating out of Russia as they are using Mail.Ru as their email service.

In addition to using a valid code signing certificate, the cybercriminals also relied on other techniques to remain undetected including embedding the Blister malware into a legitimate library. After being executed with elevated privileges by using the rundll32 command, the malware decodes bootstrapping code that is heavily obfuscated and stored in the resource section. From here, the code remains dormant for ten minutes to evade sandbox analysis.

Once enough time has passed, the malware starts up and begins decrypting embedded payloads that allow it to access a Windows system remotely and move laterally across a victim's network. Blister also achieves persistence on an infected machine by storing a copy in the ProgramData folder as well as another posing as rundll32.exe. To make matters worse, the malware is added to a system's startup location so it launches every time a machine boots.

Elastic Security has notified Sectigo to have Blister's code signing certificate revoked though the firm has also created a Yara rule to help organization's identify the new malware.

One of the best things about MMORPGS like Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker is that they're constantly rotating in content. While some of that might be giant, earth-shattering raids and storylines, some of it is light-hearted seasonal fun. 

The Final Fantasy XIV Starlight Celebration started on December 16, and is running through December 31. We didn't even think about doing it until a couple of days ago, mostly because we were struggling to get our Sage up to level 90 before the first raid, Pandaemonium, opened. (We got there, by the way). 

The Starlight Celebration event starts off in Mih Khetto's Ampitheatre in Old Gridania, and you can start it by picking up the quest "A Very Yeti Starlight" from NPC Amh Garanjy. This will take you through approximately an hour of cutscenes (if you watch all of them), and at the end you'll get two pets: Wind-Up Rudy and Squirrel Emperor. We can confirm they are very cute. 

And if you've only just recently hopped on the Final Fantasy XIV train, don't worry. You don't need to be super far in the story or at a high level to partake. You just need access to Gridania and you need to be level 15 on any job. 

There are events just like this throughout the year, and it's always some light-hearted fun. And if you aren't able to make it online in time, you can be sure that the pets will make their way onto the Optional Items store - which has a seasonal sale happening right now.

After launching back in 2008, Chrome will reach version 100 early next year but unfortunately this milestone will cause some websites to no longer work in Google's browser.

Although there are no major changes or revolutionary new features planned for Chrome 100, the search giant has been aware for some time that this major release will likely lead to problems for older websites. While Chrome 100 will release in March of next year, Google already began warning users and site owners about potential issues in a blog post published in November, saying:

“In the first half of 2022, Chrome will reach a three-digit major version number: 100! When browsers first reached version 10 many eons ago, lots of issues were discovered with User-Agent parsing libraries as the major version number went from one digit to two. Now that we are approaching version 100 in both Chrome and Firefox, with Edge not far behind, we want to detect possible issues related to three-digit version number early, so we are ready when it becomes a reality.”

When Chrome's major version number goes from two digits to three, websites developed with the web design kit Duda will no longer display correctly. Thankfully though, Google has a plan to avoid disrupting the web and the company has already begun contacting individual developers to warn them about the upcoming change.

User Agent string

In order for a website to know what browser and what version of it you're currently using, the site will check the User Agent string which is essentially a line of text that your browser attaches to every web connection it makes.

Here is an example of a User Agent string: “Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/96.0.4664.110 Safari/537.36”. At the end, you can see “Chrome/96.0.4664.110” which means we're running Chrome version 96. 

The problem with Duda resides in the fact that its developers chose to only read the first two digits so “Chrome/96” would be 96 while “Chrome/100” would be seen as 10 or version 10 to be more precise. To make matters worse, Duda automatically blocks any version of Chrome below version 40. For this reason, Chrome 100 will seen as Chrome 10 and will be automatically blocked by the web design kit, rendering websites built using it unreadable.

While Google has considered forcing the major version number to the minor version position and staying at 99 so “Chrome/100” would instead be “Chrome/99.100”, this is only a backup plan. Instead, the search giant has begun contacting individual developers to let them know about this issue before Chrome 100 is released. Google has also added a new flag to Chrome (#force-major-version-to-100) which developers can use to see whether or not their sites will be affected.

Although moving to version 100 has the potential to disrupt a lot of older sites, Google and Mozilla are working hard to address the issue before the rollouts of version 100 of both Chrome and Firefox next year .

Forget smell-o-vision. Taste TV could be the next big thing if a Japanese University professor's invention, a television screen that lets you lick the display to experience on-screen flavors, ever emerges from the lab.

According to a report in Reuters and translated details from Meiji University, Prof. Yoshiaki Miyashita's TTTV is a Taste TV that combines video images with realistic tastes.

The system starts with Miyashita's team capturing the flavors of real food. A spray mixing system featuring 10 canisters (including sweet, sour, spicy, and savory) above the portrait-mode display recreates the flavor, applies it to a lickable, transparent sheet that rolls out on top of the screen, putting the flavor in the approximate location of the in-video food.

Among the test demonstrations TTTV currently offers is a "menu you can taste," alcohol tasting, and sommelier training.

In videos provided to Reuters, subjects lick the screen to taste the flavors. In another video on Miyashita Lab's YouTube channel (see below), the research team uses a rubbery fake tongue to pick up flavors dropped on the display.

Professors Miyashita told Reuter's TV, "I'm thinking of making a platform where tastes from all over the world can be distributed as 'taste content'." He added that he envisions people downloading flavors from restaurants around the world to experience virtually and through taste.

Miyashita's invention started making news back in November when it won an Innovative Technologies Award at the Digital Content EXPO 2021 in Chiba, Japan.

There are obvious questions, like how varied are the flavors TTTV can recreate and, how does it ensure that the clickable film is clean between...uh...licks. Also, there is the larger question: do any of us really need to lick a screen to conjure a flavor, or are our imaginations good enough?
