After the US government placed a ban on certain Chinese companies working with local businesses, Huawei was forced to drop Google’s Android operating system from all its devices as the search giant was an American company.
Now, Google has applied for a license with the US government, asking permission to resume business with the Chinese company, only a few days after it warned Huawei device users not to sideload its apps for security reasons.
The vice president for Google Play and Android, Sameer Samat, revealed the news while speaking with German news outlet DPA (Deutsche Presse-Agentur), although he didn’t mention when a decision on the application would be made.
Towards the end of last year, Microsoft was granted a similar license in order to continue having its Windows operating systems ship with Huawei laptop products, such as the excellent MateBook 13, so there’s certainly precedence for Google’s application.
- Huawei P40 – what we want to see
- Huawei Mate 40 - what we want to see
- Huawei phones will never use Google Mobile Services again, according to exec
Since having to abandon Google’s Android operating system, its Play Store app shopfront, and the Play Protect certification that comes with it, Huawei has had to develop its own alternative – the snappily-titled Huawei Mobile Services and its AppGallery.
It’s unclear just how significant the impact of the trade ban has been on Huawei’s business as only two devices (the Mate 30 phablet and Mate XS foldable) have launched without Android thus far, and while the former has just arrived in the UK, neither have made it to the US, Australia or other Western markets.
It seems likely that Huawei’s phone sales in the West would be helped by the ability to access the wide range of apps available on the Google Play Store, not to mention support for Google’s own apps such as Gmail, YouTube, Drive, and Google Maps.
While Huawei is attempting to rapidly expand the apps available on its own AppGallery, there are some notable absences among some of the more popular apps, including WhatsApp, Instagram, Netflix, Uber Eats, and Messenger.
Midway through 2018, Huawei overtook Apple to become the world’s second largest Smartphone manufacturer, second only to Samsung, so we’re hoping it can buddy back up with Google and continue developing competitive and powerful devices.

In a bombshell revelation that may very well spoil all 'whodunnit' films for you going forward, Knives Out director Rian Johnson has revealed that Apple won't allow villains to use iPhones in movies.
In a Knives Out scene breakdown video for Vanity Fair, Johnson revealed some fascinating information regarding Apple's policy when it comes to the use of its products in films – a policy which might make you pay closer attention to a character's choice of handset in all future mystery films.
"I don't know if I should say this or not" the director begins nervously, before stating that the following divulgence "is gonna screw me on the next mystery movie that I write, but forget it, I'll say it – it's very interesting."
“Apple, they let you use iPhones in movies,” says The Last Jedi director, “but – and this is very pivotal if you’re watching a mystery movie – bad guys cannot have iPhones on camera.”
Johnson then goes on to joke that "every single filmmaker who has a bad guy in a movie that's supposed to be a secret wants to murder me right now!"
Good guys eat apples, bad guys eat oranges
Of course, this kind of practice is far from new – nearly 18 years ago, Wired famously noted that terrorists on the show 24 all used Windows PCs, while its heroes all used Macs.
At the time, this was presumed to be an example of Apple simply being more aggressive in regards to product placement than its competitors.
However, Johnson's comments have now explicitly brought the Cupertino company's policy out in the open, turning what was once a long-held theory into a verified fact – more or less.

The ongoing coronavirus crisis is making it more difficult for Chinese citizens and expats in the country to access the global internet as the Chinese government has once again initiated a crackdown on VPN services.
By preventing users from accessing VPNs within its borders, China can more easily control the flow of information into and out of the country. While this allows the country to stop misinformation regarding the coronavirus from spreading online, it also makes it more difficult for Chinese citizens and residents to find out what is really going on around the world.
VPNs give users the ability to bypass China's Great Firewall and the country's government allows these services to operate to some degree.
- China VPN crackdown 'to control coronavirus message'
- Apple may block VPNs from Chinese app store
- Coronavirus malware scams return with a venegeance
Although the Chinese government has banned private, unregistered VPN services, it does allow government-registered ones to operate in the country. Registered VPNs are mainly used by foreign and domestic businesses that need to access the global internet as part of their daily operations. For example, many Chinese businesses have a strong presence on Twitter, despite the service being banned in the country, and they all use registered VPNs to access it.
China's VPN crackdown
For the most part, China has enforced its VPN ban more forcefully against VPN providers than it has against individuals using these services within its borders. However, the Chinese government has established a clear pattern of cracking down on VPNs during times of potential political tensions.
For instance, during last year's National People's Congress meeting in March, which is the largest annual political gathering in China, many VPN users complained that they were unable to bypass the country's firewall. The same thing occurred last September when users voiced concerns about VPN servers being down ahead of the 70th anniversary celebrations of the founding of the People's Republic of China.
The website Greatfire tracks the performance of VPNs in China and according to its creator Charlie Smith, VPN users across the country have found it increasingly difficult to use these services since the coronavirus outbreak began. Smith provided further insight on the current situation in China in a statement to Fortune, saying:
“The current situation for VPNs is very similar to what happens during major government meetings in China. The authorities throttle VPN usage, rendering use of the foreign Internet near impossible."
Greatfire tracks VPN speeds over a 60-day period and since the outbreak began, 10 of the top 15 VPNs working in China have shown a significant decline in performance.

Saying that we're very happy with Dell's XPS 13 is a huge understatement. The slim profile, revolutionary design and small frame bely its powerful performance and gorgeous 13-inch screen. Typically you'd have to weigh up portability and performance, but the XPS 13 has managed to strike a fine balance between the two. With Intel's latest Kaby Lake processors plus lighting, quick storage and memory, the XPS 13's starting price is certainly an impressive one. We're so chuffed with it that it's still one of our favourite Ultrabook, and has taken the top spot as the best Windows laptop and the best overall laptop.

Asus has nailed it with the overhauled ZenBook Flip S 2-in-1. Adding top of the line processing power, plenty of memory and a speedy PCle solid state drive available in some of the models, this laptop shows off a beautiful new design to perfection, giving you the ability to use it as a laptop or a tablet. While it costs a pretty penny as compared to some of the competition out there, it would be our top recommendation if money isn't a factor.

While this may not be a great leap from the previous generation of MacBook Pros with Touch Bar, the 2018 model is definitely the best Apple has produced to date. The Cupertino firm has ramped up performance for the 13-inch MacBook Pro 2018, more so than the bigger 15-inch model as well. A thin OLED display at the top end of the keyboard can be customised to for various functions, and also offer Touch ID for secure logins. And although it retains Apple's signature design, it doesn't come cheap, but you can argue with the choice if you're a diehard Apple fan.

Our earlier choice of gaming laptop, the Asus ROG Zephyrus GX501 has been knocked off its perch by MSI's GS65 Stealth. With cutting edge components, including an 8th-gen Intel Core i7-8750H processor and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 GPU, it makes the top spot in gaming laptops. It's also cheaper than the ROG Zephyrus GX501. And it doesn't look like a hunky gaming laptop either; with subtle design tweaks, the GS65 Stealth can pass off as a work or study laptop without anyone being none the wiser.

Dell's XPS 15 laptops were already some of the best you could buy, but this beautifully redesigned 15-inch 2-in-1 competes with the Dell XPS 13 in every respect, with the convenience of becoming a tablet when needed. It's one of the most aesthetically pleasing devices in its category and also boast plenty of power. Under the hood is a new Intel Kaby Lake G-series processor featuring 'discreet-class' Radeon graphics – meaning with the power comes a bit more noise.

It might be over two years old now but the Canon PowerShot G9 X Mark II is still quite the pocket rocket. So if Canon decides it's time to give it a new lick of paint and produce a Mark III upgraded version, it would likely be one of the best compact cameras you could buy.
If Canon Rumors is to be believed, we might just see the PowerShot G9 X Mark III arrive this year.
According to the camera news publication, the rumored PowerShot G9 X Mark III will come with a sensor boasting a 20.1MP resolution – which will be no different from the current Mark II model – alongside the latest Digic 8 image processor that gives the EOS 90D and the EOS M6 Mark II their speed and power.
Where the PowerShot G9 X Mark II has a 28-84mm lens that offers a 3x optical zoom, Canon Rumors is reporting that the updated camera will feature a 4x zoom – whether it will be as wide as the 24mm-100mm f/1.8-2.8 lens on the PowerShot G7 X Mark III is anyone's guess.
With 4K video a given these days on every new camera, we're expecting the G9 X Mark III to match that at 30fps – a major upgrade to the Mark II's 1080p video capture.
If Canon is serious about keeping its PowerShot line alive and up to date, it would be interesting to see whether the G9 X Mark III will come in at a higher price point than its predecessor because of the upgraded specs. The Mark II launched with a price tag of $529 / £449.99 / AU$629 and is now available for cheaper in most markets, but a higher launch price for the rumored upgrade could put it in direct contention with the G7 X line.
