Remedy's chief executive offer, Tero Virtala, has revealed how Alan Wake 2 has impacted the studio and the future of other upcoming games in development.

Alan Wake 2 was released in late 2024 to wide critical success, and since then it has managed to sell 1.3 million units as of the beginning of February 2024 according to a stock exchange memo from Remedy

"By comparison, Alan Wake 2 sold over 50% more copies and over three times more digital copies in its first two months than Control did in its first four months," the memo explains. "A great game can generate excellent long tail sales, and we expect this to be the case with Alan Wake 2 as well."

There is also mention in the memo of two paid DLCs and continuing updates for Alan Wake 2. This will likely work to support the horror game and the community that surrounds it. The latest update, which was released towards the end of January 2024, saw chapter selection and an option to stop jumpscare visuals from popping up on your screen.

"We will continue to develop the game to serve existing fans and attract new players and expect the game to continue selling well,” Virtala explains. “The successful launch of Alan Wake 2 has supported our other game projects: Condor, Control 2, and Max Payne 1&2 remake have all increased development pace thanks to the personnel released from Alan Wake 2, and we expect these projects to reach their next development stages during the first half of 2024."

This is excellent news for horror and survival game fans as well as those looking forward to experiencing more of the ever-growing Remedy Connected Universe.

This year’s Geneva Motor Show is going to be a comparatively quiet affair, with most of biggest automakers in the world boycotting the format following its recent move to Qatar. But Chinese EV giant BYD will be there, complete with the equally gargantuan Yangwang U8.

Boasting four electric motors - one for each wheel for true all-wheel-drive - as well as a 49kWh battery pack, the opulent U8 also uses a 2.0-litre turbo petrol that acts as a range-extending generator to top up the battery packs on the move.

Previously a model only destined for China, the fact BYD is bringing it to Geneva suggests it is gauging opinion ahead of a potential European launch.

As a reminder, the Yangwang U8 rides on a new e4 platform that isn’t currently shared with anything in the group. And although the model packs all of the hallmarks of a hulking SUV for the urban show-off, it is in fact engineered to tackle truly tricky terrain.

Yangwang U8

Previously, the U8 has been shown performing 360-degree 'tank turns', where each wheel is individually controlled to allow the vehicle to effectively spin on the spot. On top of this, Yangwang also took delight in showcasing its 'emergency flotation' function that sees the vehicle sit on top of the water for around 30 minutes… like a boat.

If it senses a flash flood, or the U8 accidentally takes a dip in a nearby body of water, the windows close, the sunroof opens (to act as an emergency escape hatch) and the wheels can spin in order to propel the vehicle along at slow speed. It’s not quite an amphibious car, but it’s close.

The performance stats are mightily impressive, too. There’s 1,184bhp on tap, which means it can accelerate from 0-62mph in 3.6 seconds, while the onboard range extending engine means the overall electric range is pegged at 621 miles with everything brimmed.

Chinese brands drive towards the luxury market

Yangwang might not be a name that’s on your current EV radar but it is making waves in China, where its other party piece - the U9 electric supercar - showcases technology that allows it to jump and even drive on three wheels should you get a puncture. The same tech has been carried across to the off-road U8, where it arguably makes more sense.

Slated to cost around £120,000 (around $150,000 / AUS$232,000) in its domestic market, the U8 would represent excellent value for money in Europe if it can stick to those sticker prices.

It would mean it sits in direct competition with the upcoming Mercedes-Benz EQG (or the electric G-Class, for short) and a fully kitted out Land Rover Defender.

Whether or not the rest of the world will swallow that kind on money for a relatively unknown marque from China is another question, but the fact BYD is showcasing a swathe of vehicles at the Geneva Motor show suggests that it is seriously thinking about taking a punt.

Hundreds of thousands of Facebook Marketplace users have had their personal information stolen and posted on a dark web forum, putting them at serious risk of phishing, identity theft, and other cybercrime.

According to a BleepingComputer report, a known data leaker with the alias IntelBroker posted a new thread on an underground forum, with 200,000 Facebook Marketplace records. The records contained people’s names, phone numbers, email addresses, Facebook IDs, and Facebook profile information.

The hacker claims this is a partial Marketplace database, stolen by a different threat actor, with the Discord alias “algoatson”. This person allegedly breached the systems of a Meta contractor late last year. "In October 2023, a cyber criminal by the name of 'algoatson' on Discord, breached a contractor that manages cloud services for Facebook and stole its partial user database of 200,000 entries," IntelBroker allegedly said in the forum thread.

The publication said that at least some of the data is valid, as it took a random sampling and successfully matched email addresses and phone number information.

What can hackers do with your data?

IntelBroker is a known leaker, who has a long track record of leaks from major companies. Before Meta, IntelBroker was seen sharing sensitive data from DC Health Link, Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), General Electric Aviation, Weee!, and others.

Information such as this one is a true treasure trove for hackers around the world. By knowing the details about people’s personal lives, they can craft convincing phishing attacks, breaking into their computers and smartphones, and possibly even stealing money and cryptocurrencies. They can also target businesses, deploying different malware and ransomware, and engaging in devastating Business Email Compromise (BEC) attacks.

Companies that suffer data leaks often offer affected individuals identity theft protection services for free.

Meta is yet to formally comment on the incident.

Nvidia briefly overtook Amazon in terms of market capitalization, fueled by a spike in interest surrounding artificial intelligence.

LSEG data reported by Reuters claimed the chipmaker reached a record high of $734.96 per share, giving it a market value of $1.82 trillion, surpassing Amazon’s $1.81 trillion.

Nvidia has now returned back to fifth position among the US’s most valuable companies, trailing Microsoft, Apple, Alphabet (Google) and Amazon.

Is Nvidia worth more than Amazon?

With Nvidia share prices rising 231.6% over the past year, and Amazon shares up by a less impressive (but still very healthy) 73.1%, Nvidia may soon overtake the Seattle-based company more permanently.

This achievement marks the first time Nvidia has outpaced Amazon in more than two decades, when it 2002 they were both worth less than $6 billion.

With Amazon reporting better-than-expected sales last month, thanks to a successful holiday period, investors are waiting for Nvidia to report its most recent quarterly earnings on February 21.

Nvidia has positioned itself as a key player in supplying components to technology companies focused on generative AI. However, with companies like Google, Amazon and Meta all exploring their own chips, Nvidia’s success rides on a lot.

Elsewhere in the tech landscape, Microsoft last month surpassed Apple as the world’s most valuable company, and the second to reach a market value of more than $3 trillion. Today, Apple sits below that $3 trillion threshold, after reaching the momentous figure in June 2023.

As the AI boom continues, Nvidia’s considerable share of the market highlights the growing significance of technology companies in contributing to the overall global economy, as well as the immense growth potential for companies handling aspects of AI.

A tale of three million hacked electric toothbrushes used to launch a DDoS attack has sparked skepticism among cybersecurity experts. The story, which originated from cybersecurity firm Fortinet went viral, raising questions about its authenticity.

Last week, Swiss news site Aargauer Zeitung reported that three million manipulated toothbrushes were involved in a cyberattack. The case, presented by Fortinet, a global cybersecurity leader, quickly gained traction, featuring in international media outlets such as the Independent and Times of India.

However, the story was met with skepticism, with some experts labeling it as "pure fiction" and "an invented example." Others claimed there was no evidence to suggest such an attack ever occurred. Cybersecurity expert Kevin Beaumont even highlighted that the story was being used as propaganda in Russian Telegram chats.

Contradicting statements

Fortinet issued a statement, carried by several media outlets, including BleepingComputer, saying "To clarify, the topic of toothbrushes being used for DDoS attacks was presented during an interview as an illustration of a given type of attack, and it is not based on research from Fortinet or FortiGuard Labs. It appears that due to translations the narrative on this topic has been stretched to the point where hypothetical and actual scenarios are blurred."

However, the following day, the author of the original story at Aargauer Zeitung disputed this, saying, "Fortinet provided specific details: information about how long the attack took down a Swiss company's website; an order of magnitude of how great the damage was. Fortinet did not want to reveal which company it was out of consideration for its customers. The text was submitted to Fortinet for verification before publication. The statement that this was a real case that really happened was not objected to."

The case of the three million toothbrushes DDoS attack continues to be shrouded in mystery for now, leaving us all wondering exactly where the truth lies.

Nvidia's most powerful AI chip to date, the GH200 Grace Hopper Superchip, is now available for pre-order. It is designed for heavy generative AI workloads, such as Large Language Models like ChatGPT.

The GH200 superchip boasts a high-bandwidth connection between the Grace CPU and Hopper GPU, which Nvidia says allows for a tenfold increase in performance for applications running terabytes of data.

The company claims this boost in power and efficiency could enable scientists and researchers to discover unprecedented solutions to some of the world’s most complex problems, but businesses stand to benefit from the GH200 too, which offers enhanced LLM  training and inference.

Available to reserve now

One of the key features of the GH200 is the power of its coherent memory. The NVIDIA NVLink-C2C interconnect provides 900GB/s of bidirectional bandwidth between CPU and GPU - seven times the performance found in accelerated systems. This connection offers unified cache coherence with a single memory address space that combines system and HBM GPU memory, simplifying programmability.

The GH200's specifications are unquestionably impressive and should help Nvidia continue its dominance in the AI hardware space. The Grace CPU boasts 72 cores, with a CPU LPDDR5X bandwidth of up to 500 GB/s. The GPU HBM bandwidth is 4TB/s HBM3, with an NVLink-C2C bandwidth of 900GB/s total, 450GB/s per direction. Its CPU LPDDR5X capacity is 480GB, while the GPU HBM capacity is 96GB HBM3.

With an introductory price of just $4.99 per hour, the GH200 is available to reserve on Vultr now. Nvidia previously stated that it expects system makers to make the first models based on Grace Hopper available in Q2 of 2024.
