Ayar Labs has demonstrated an innovative technology that plugs directly into chip packages and uses light to transmit data – reaching blistering transfer speeds.

The firm paired its TeraPHY optical I/O chiplet with a SuperNova multi-wavelength light source, and they bundled this with an Intel Pluggable transceiver module, according to Serve the Home

On show at SC23 last month, Ayar Labs' TeraPHY chiplet can reach 4Tbps bidirectional bandwidth while only consuming 10W power – which is far greater than lightning speeds of today's high bandwidth memory (HBM) units. For example, Macron's HBM3E units can reach up to 10Gbps of data processing speeds – which pales in comparison to the possibilities using the optical technology that could replace electronic signals – if brought to the market.

Look toward the light

Ayar Labs first teased this technology in March, demonstrating its 4Tbps light-enabled capabilities at the Optical Fiber Communication Conference (OFC).

The technology, in particular, may allow compute, emmory and network silicon to communicate by using only a fraction of the power used today. It also boosts the performance, latency and reach when compared with the performance of electric signals.

Silicon photonics has been discussed in the industry for a while, with Nvidia signing a research and development partnership with Ayar Labs last year to build on the early promise of the technology.

The manufacturer of some of the best GPUs on the market also took part in Series C fundraising, investing into the firm as part of a $130 million package to develop out of band lasers and silicon photonics interconnects.

By plugging the technology directly into chip packages, it could be freed from printed circuit boards and long electrical traces, according to Serve the Home. The module's pluggable form factor also means it can be replaced if things go awry.

If delivered in such a form, Ayar Labs believes it can become foundational to next-generation AI applications, data centers, and dense 6G communications, as well as other applications.

Microsoft has confirmed that Windows 10 will live on beyond its end of support (EOS) date of October 14, 2025, but users will have to pay up to keep using the platform safely.

Although Windows 10 22H2 has already been confirmed to be the final version of the operating system, Microsoft has committed to monthly security updates until the EOS, at which point, it will no longer get bug fixes for issues, security fixes for vulnerabilities, or time zone updates.

However, the company has now announced plans for an Extended Security Updates (ESU) program, much like the one that was offered for Windows 7, which will last up to three more years.

Windows 10 ESU confirmed

Microsoft said that organizations will be able to purchase yearly subscriptions for Windows 10 ESU, which will be renewable for up to three years. Enrolled devices will continue to get monthly security updates.

As of November, Windows 10 still accounts for more than two in three (68.0%) of all Windows installs (via Statcounter). While Windows 11 adoption continues to rise, it only accounts for just over one-quarter (26.6%) of the Windows market. Windows 7 now stands at 3.2%, down from 11.2% in December 2022.

Despite plans to continue support for those willing to fork out an annual fee, Microsoft continues to push Windows 11, suggesting that users upgrade their existing device, buy a compatible model, or go the cloud route and run Windows 11 via Microsoft 365.

The company added: “The ESU program for Windows 10 will include critical and/or important security updates. ESUs do not include new features, customer-requested non-security updates, or design change requests. Technical support beyond the ESU itself is also not available.”

Details, including pricing, are yet to be revealed, but Redmond has alluded to an ESU program for individual customers, too.

When it comes to choosing one of the best turntables as a gift for the budding vinyl lover in your life, there's a lot to choose from. You can spend a little, or you can spend a lot – a big lot. And you can never be sure you're buying the absolute best plate-spinner for the money… unless you come here first, that is.

You're probably already checking out our guides to the best Christmas sales in the US and Boxing Day sales in the UK (for even more great holiday and Christmas gift ideas) but if you're looking for a turntable, you came to the right place. These are the four decks I recommend this year – some are seeing a couple of decent discounts too.

My pick of the best turntables for gifting this year

The best turntable for most people

Pro-Ject Debut Carbon Evo: Pro-Ject's most refined and upgraded Debut so far

A quick glance at our five-star Pro-Ject Debut Carbon Evo review may be all you need to know here, but if not, just understand that it's one of the best turntables on the planet right now. The carbon fiber tonearm is supplied with a very capable Ortofon (or Sumika) cartridge. A new motor design, some damped and adjustable feet, and automatic speed change contribute no end to improved performance and improved ergonomics over the previous model from Pro-Ject. A gorgeous and still relatively affordable thing and a top pick for someone's main present this year.

A chic and simple deck for newbies

Sony PS-LX310BT: a chic, simple deck for newbies

Within five minutes, you can set this little beauty up and even have it streaming your vinyl to your Bluetooth headphones. Released at CES 2019, this was the first deck I ever reviewed that let me send vinyl to my wireless headphones (and you can read that five-star Sony LS-PX310BT review I helped to write, for our sister site, What Hi-Fi? Then, please come back here). Setup is a breeze, truly, and it's a rock-solid entry-level deck. In vinyl years it's still a baby, but it has seen a couple of discounts recently too.

A great turntable for longevity

Denon DP-300F: a great turntable for longevity

As we said in our very respectable four-star review of this friendly Denon deck, "If you’re just starting a record collection and don’t want to deal with a complicated turntable setup, the Denon DP-300F is an excellent choice." OK, you’ll sacrifice a modicum of sound quality for its convenient features and setup, but you can always upgrade the pre-mounted cartridge as you gain confidence, for a sound more suited to your musical tastes.

A solid step-up deck

Audio-Technica AT-LP5x: a winning step-up deck from a trusted name

Audio-Technica's splendid direct drive deck is, as we said in our Audio-Technica AT-LP5x hands-on review, a great step up toward premium audio for those just leveling up in the world of vinyl fandom. A note on it: it's often low in stock at Amazon, owing to its popularity. Hopefully, there's still one with your name on it though – or the name of the vinyl lover in your life.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has added a new outage simulator to its Fault Injection Service (FIS) to help customers see how resilient their companies are to major outages.

The announcement, made during the company’s AWS re:Invent event, lets customers “put chaos engineering into practice at scale” by introducing simulation for AWS Availability Zone full power interruption or connectivity loss to another AWS region.

Amazon says engineers can do this to get a better understanding of their direct and indirect dependencies and to test recovery time after an outage.

AWS outage simulator levels up

Though cloud services, on the whole, have proven reliable, increasing geopolitical tensions have had enterprises worried over potential outages and the effect they could have on their business. Not to mention some pretty embarrassing blunders that have happened recently, including a simple typo that caused an hours-long Azure outage in Brazil.

Among the new additions to FIS is “AZ Availability: Power Interruption.” Amazon says this will fake “pull[ing] the plug” on a targeted set of resources in an Availability Zone, including “EC2 instances (including those in EKS and ECS clusters), EBS volumes, Auto Scaling Groups, VPC subnets, Amazon ElastiCache for Redis clusters, and Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS) clusters.”

Another test, “Cross-Region: Connectivity,” will prevent applications from being able to access resources in another target region, including traffic from “EC2 instances, ECS tasks, EKS pods, Lambda functions attached to a VPC… traffic flowing across Transit Gateways and VPC peering connections, as well as cross-region S3 and DynamoDB replication.”

Amazon has confirmed that these tests will be available in all commercial AWS Regions where FIS is already available, and will cost the action-minutes consumed by the experiments run.

The first teaser for House of the Dragon season 2 has taken flight – and it promises to deliver a fiery and bloody war between House Targaryen's rival factions.

Indeed, the first official footage for the sophomore season of one of the best Max shows around teases a suspense-filled second outing for the Game of Thrones prequel series. In it, we see Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen and Queen Alicent Hightower assemble their troops, allies, and fire-breathing winged beasts to rain terror down on their foes, and we expect many of the show's new and returning characters to be caught in the crossfire.

The trailer also confirms what we already knew about House of the Dragon season 2's release window – i.e. that it's coming in summer 2024 (that's autumn 2024, for anyone south of the equator). Unfortunately, a Max press release didn't provide any further details on what we should expect from the story of the series' sophomore outing, so we'll have to wait for more details to emerge closer to launch.

House of the Dragon season 2 was one of the few TV shows unaffected by the 2023 writers strike, which means it's on course to meet its mid-2024 launch, too. Alongside its fantasy cousin The Rings of Power season 2, which might arrive on Prime Video in 2024 as well, House of the Dragon was able to continue filming amid the bitter writers' strike because it was being shot in the UK and its cast largely comprises British actors, who aren't part of the Screen Actors Guild – aka the actors union that also went on strike in 2023.
