Millions of Chinese citizens have had their sensitive data exposed online thanks to yet another unprotected database. 

Cybersecurity researchers from CloudDefense.ai recently reported finding a major database generated by Zhefengle, a Chinese ecommerce store that focuses on importing products from abroad.

The database held 3.3 million orders made by Zhefengle’s customers between 2015 and 2020. In some cases, the entries contained shipping addresses and phone numbers, and in other cases even copies of government-issued identity cards. 

Unprotected databases

When importing products from abroad, Chinese citizens are sometimes asked to verify their identity, TechCrunch reports, adding that the practice of requiring a copy of the ID card to be uploaded was “not uncommon”. 

The database was not protected by a password, so whoever knew its IP address could have easily accessed it. At press time, it wasn’t known if any malicious actors discovered the database before the researchers, or if it was already used in any phishing attacks or identity theft.

We do know that the owners locked it down soon after. Replying to the publication, the store owners said: “The vulnerability has been addressed promptly. We are currently investigating the cause internally.”

Unprotected databases are one of the most common ways sensitive data gets spilled online. In early October this year, researchers found a database belonging to Real Simple Systems, that kept personally identifiable and sensitive information on hundreds of thousands of people.

A month prior, in September, Microsoft was spotted making the same mistake, as Wiz found a major Microsoft Azure cloud storage database containing, among other things, private keys and passwords. The database belonged to Microsoft’s researchers working on Artificial Intelligence (AI), and was allegedly 38TB heavy.

In May, Toyota was found keeping an unprotected database of 2.15 million users. "It was discovered that part of the data that Toyota Motor Corporation entrusted to Toyota Connected Corporation to manage had been made public due to misconfiguration of the cloud environment," the company said at the time.

The North Korean hacking collective Lazarus Group is back at it again, targeting blockchain engineers with advanced data exfiltration and remote code execution-capable trojans.

A report from researchers Elastic Security observed a new attack that originated on Discord and targeted the cryptocurrency community. By deploying a simple social engineering strategy, the attackers try and convince the victim to download a file named “Cross-platform Bridges.zip”, thinking it’s an arbitrage bot.

Arbitrage bots are usually legitimate pieces of code that allow users to automate buying crypto on one exchange and selling it on another where the price is slightly different. The changes in the prices are minuscule, but with automation and a hefty sum to get going, some people claim the bots work well. Usually, the bots can be purchased for tens of thousands of dollars. 

State-sponsored threat actors

But obviously, the victims wouldn’t be getting the bot. Instead, they’d get the KandyKorn malware, built for the macOS and capable of a number of things, including gathering system information, listing directory contents, downloading and running files on the victim’s endpoint, deleting files, killing processes, stealing files, and more.

The malware was built by the infamous Lazarus Group, the researchers allege, basing these claims on code and campaign overlaps with previous instances that were attributed to the North Koreans.

Lazarus is a known group, with strong ties with the North Korean government. Allegedly, it was behind some of the biggest crypto heists in history, including the attack on the Ronin bridge, which left the protocol some $600 million short. The stolen money is being used to fund the North Korean government and its nuclear program, western intelligence agencies claim.

This group is also well-known for running fake job schemes, tricking developers into downloading malware during the “hiring” process.

It's time for your daily dose of Quordle hints, plus the answers for both the main game and the Daily Sequence spin off. 

Quordle is the only one of the many Wordle clones that I'm still playing now, around 18 months after the daily-word-game craze hit the internet, and with good reason: it's fun, but also difficult.

What's more, its makers (now the online dictionary Merriam-Webster) are also keeping it fresh in the form of a variant called the Daily Sequence, which sees you complete four puzzles consecutively, rather than concurrently. 

But Quordle is tough, so if you already find yourself searching for Wordle hints, you'll probably need some for this game too.

Quordle FAQs: Everything you need to know

What is Quordle?

Where Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day, Quordle presents you with four puzzles to solve. And rather than complete them in turn, you do so simultaneously. You get nine guesses, rather than the six for Wordle, but the rules are otherwise very similar. 

It's played online via the Quordle website and you can also get to it via the Merriam-Webster site, after the dictionary purchased Quordle last year. 

As with Wordle, the answers are the same for every player each day, meaning that you're competing against the rest of the world. And also as with Wordle, the puzzle resets at midnight so you have a fresh challenge each day.

The website also includes a practice mode - which I definitely recommend using before attempting the game proper! - and there are daily stats including a streak count. You also get Quordle Achievements - specific badges for winning a game in a certain number of turns, playing lots of times, or guessing particularly hard words.

Oh, and it's difficult. Really difficult.

What are the Quordle rules?

The rules of Quordle are almost identical to those of Wordle.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow. 

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray…

4. …BUT the word you guess appears in all quadrants of the puzzle at the same time, so an A could turn green in one square, yellow in another and gray in the final two. 

5. Answers are never plural.

6. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

7. Each guess must be a valid word in Quordle's dictionary. You can't guess ABCDE, for instance.

8. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses and there is no equivalent of Wordle's Hard mode.

9. You have nine guesses to find the Quordle answers.

10. You must complete the daily Quordle before midnight in your timezone.

What is a good Quordle strategy?

Quordle needs to be approached in a different way to Wordle. With four puzzles to solve in nine guesses, you can't blindly throw letters at it and expect to win - you'll stand a far better chance if you think strategically.

That's the case in Wordle too, of course, but it's even more important in Quordle.

There are two key things to remember. 

1. Use several starting words

Firstly, you won't want just a single starting word, but almost certainly two or three starting words. 

The first of these should probably be one of the best Wordle starting words, because the same things that make them work well will apply here too. But after that, you should select another word or possibly two that use up lots more of the most common consonants and that include any remaining vowels.

For instance, I currently use STARE > DOILY > PUNCH. Between them, these three words use 15 of the 26 letters in the alphabet including all five vowels, Y, and nine of the most common consonants (S, T, R, D, L, P, N, C and H). There are plenty of other options - you might want to get an M, B, F or G in there instead of the H, maybe - but something like that should do the trick.

If all goes well, that will give you a good lead on what one or sometimes two of the answers might be. If not, well good luck!

2. Narrow things down

Secondly, if you're faced with a word where the answer might easily be one of several options - for instance -ATCH, where it could be MATCH, BATCH, LATCH, CATCH, WATCH, HATCH or PATCH - you'll definitely want to guess a word that would narrow down those options. 

In Wordle, you can instead try several of those in succession and hope one is right, assuming you have enough guesses left. It's risky, but will sometimes work. Plus, it's the only option in Hard mode. But in Quordle, this will almost certainly result in a failure - you simply don't have enough guesses.

In the scenario above, CLAMP would be a great guess, as it could point the way to four of the seven words in one go.

Overwatch 2's newest hero, Mauga, scheduled to release in Season 8, has just been announced at Blizzcon and there's a lot for fans to look forward to. 

Mauga looks to be a strong addition to the tank roster in Overwatch 2. Tooled up with dual miniguns as a primary, Mauga backs this up with a front-line breaking power called Overrun and a destructive Ultimate Ability named Cage Fight. 

Can't wait to try it out? Don't worry: the upcoming character will be made playable in a free trial this weekend from November 3 to November 5, coming to all modes of the game as soon as Blizzcon's conference ended.  

Overwatch 2 has not received a new Tank hero since Ramattra was added in Season 2, so it’s great news for Tank mains who are looking for something new.  Mauga crits burning heroes, and most of his abilities are all about fighting and pushing forwards and feels incredibly aggressive. He's also the game's first Samoan hero, and Mauga means Mountain in Samoan. However, he's not just big - he is big - but he's also a cunning tactician. 

His abilities are as follows:

• Chaingun Combo - Mauga has two named chainguns that he dual wields (lovingly named 'Gunny' and 'Cha-Cha') which he can combine to devastating effect
• Overrun - this is Mauga's unstoppable charge ability, enabling him to burst through enemy lines
• Cardiac Overdrive  - an ability that enables Mauga to take reduced damage but also regain health by dealing damage
• Cage fight - This is Mauga's ultimate ability and gives you unlimited ammo and lets you bring the pain to others in close combat, trapping them inside a fighting ring.

Mauga has appeared in the lore of this first-person shooter before. A heavy assault fighter for Talon, he was comrades with Baptiste before the support hero switched to the good side. He is said to be proficient in close combat, with Baptiste describing him as being "like a demon". Hopefully, this means Mauga's secondary weapon will cause some serious close-range damage. 

Many long-time fans won't be surprised to see Mauga added to Overwatch 2. This new tank hero was initially meant to be added in 2019 as Hero 31, according to a now-deleted interview with former VP of Blizzard, Jeff Kaplan. This spot went to the terrifying scientist Sigma instead. 

The switch was made once Overwatch 2's lead designer, Geoff Goodman, and associate designer Joshua Noh decided that the kit that was made didn't suit Mauga's personality. Since then, fans have been waiting for his arrival, and after the newest map in Season 7, Samoa was added (Mauga's home nation), the tank's arrival seemed like a done deal.

After a series of delays and setbacks, Movano has finally announced a launch date for its Oura Ring-rivaling Evie smart ring.

The health wearable for women monitors heart rate, heart-rate variability and SpO2 (or blood oxygen) levels to provide a baseline understanding of your overall health. Like bulkier wearables and smartwatches, this neatly-designed device also tracks sleep quality and can monitor your menstrual cycle via its accompanying app.

What’s more, Movano says Evie can also keep a log of activity minutes, calories burned and metabolic calories, all wrapped up in a tasteful piece of jewelry. But why do women need a dedicated wearable? To help explain, the company recently released a white paper about the apparent benefits of wearables that take into account "the nuances of sex and gender" when interpreting biometric markers.

According to a press release from the company, you'll be able to place an order for the Evie Ring from November 20, exclusively through its own website for a retail price of $269 (around £220 / AU$420) and, refreshingly, no subscription fee. The ring will be available in sizes 5-12 and you can also choose to receive a complimentary sizing kit with your purchase.

Although initially announced at the tail end of 2022, the launch of the Eve Ring has been pushed back multiple times, as Movano sought full FDA approval to market the device as a medical product (which it hasn't yet received). According to Wareable, this meant calibrating heart rate and Sp02 readings to adhere to strict legislative guidelines.

One ring to rule them all?

The Movano Evie's main rival is the Oura Ring, which offers accurate readings of over 20 biometrics in a fashionable design that can be specified in a number of sizes and finishes. It's currently top of our guide to the best smart rings.

But the Oura isn't specifically marketed at women, with designs and color combos targeting all kinds of users, and this is where the Movano Evie Ring differs. It isn't yet clear exactly how the Evie will tailor its analysis of health-related biometrics for women, but this should become clearer now it's close to going on sale. 

What about Movano's attempts to get the Evie approved by the FDA in the US as a medical device? Right now, Movano is only saying that it's "working closely with the FDA to navigate the regulatory process for medical device clearances" after making its first submission earlier this year.

Still, if it does manage to achieve that feat, it would certainly be a boost to the perceived accuracy of its heart rate and SpO2 metrics. And Movano says that it won't affect the Evie's pricing, stating in a blog post that "the Evie Ring will be available for purchase at $269 with no additional fees or subscription costs, regardless of the FDA’s decision".

The Evie ring partners with an in-depth smartphone app (above) that looks at everything from heart health to detailing a clear menstrual cycle calendar with symptom and mood tracking, as well as period and ovulation estimations.

It looks like a neat solution that does away with the need to wear bulky fitness or smartwatches – we're looking forward to taking it for a spin soon.
