Overwatch 2's newest hero, Mauga, scheduled to release in Season 8, has just been announced at Blizzcon and there's a lot for fans to look forward to. 

Mauga looks to be a strong addition to the tank roster in Overwatch 2. Tooled up with dual miniguns as a primary, Mauga backs this up with a front-line breaking power called Overrun and a destructive Ultimate Ability named Cage Fight. 

Can't wait to try it out? Don't worry: the upcoming character will be made playable in a free trial this weekend from November 3 to November 5, coming to all modes of the game as soon as Blizzcon's conference ended.  

Overwatch 2 has not received a new Tank hero since Ramattra was added in Season 2, so it’s great news for Tank mains who are looking for something new.  Mauga crits burning heroes, and most of his abilities are all about fighting and pushing forwards and feels incredibly aggressive. He's also the game's first Samoan hero, and Mauga means Mountain in Samoan. However, he's not just big - he is big - but he's also a cunning tactician. 

His abilities are as follows:

• Chaingun Combo - Mauga has two named chainguns that he dual wields (lovingly named 'Gunny' and 'Cha-Cha') which he can combine to devastating effect
• Overrun - this is Mauga's unstoppable charge ability, enabling him to burst through enemy lines
• Cardiac Overdrive  - an ability that enables Mauga to take reduced damage but also regain health by dealing damage
• Cage fight - This is Mauga's ultimate ability and gives you unlimited ammo and lets you bring the pain to others in close combat, trapping them inside a fighting ring.

Mauga has appeared in the lore of this first-person shooter before. A heavy assault fighter for Talon, he was comrades with Baptiste before the support hero switched to the good side. He is said to be proficient in close combat, with Baptiste describing him as being "like a demon". Hopefully, this means Mauga's secondary weapon will cause some serious close-range damage. 

Many long-time fans won't be surprised to see Mauga added to Overwatch 2. This new tank hero was initially meant to be added in 2019 as Hero 31, according to a now-deleted interview with former VP of Blizzard, Jeff Kaplan. This spot went to the terrifying scientist Sigma instead. 

The switch was made once Overwatch 2's lead designer, Geoff Goodman, and associate designer Joshua Noh decided that the kit that was made didn't suit Mauga's personality. Since then, fans have been waiting for his arrival, and after the newest map in Season 7, Samoa was added (Mauga's home nation), the tank's arrival seemed like a done deal.

After a series of delays and setbacks, Movano has finally announced a launch date for its Oura Ring-rivaling Evie smart ring.

The health wearable for women monitors heart rate, heart-rate variability and SpO2 (or blood oxygen) levels to provide a baseline understanding of your overall health. Like bulkier wearables and smartwatches, this neatly-designed device also tracks sleep quality and can monitor your menstrual cycle via its accompanying app.

What’s more, Movano says Evie can also keep a log of activity minutes, calories burned and metabolic calories, all wrapped up in a tasteful piece of jewelry. But why do women need a dedicated wearable? To help explain, the company recently released a white paper about the apparent benefits of wearables that take into account "the nuances of sex and gender" when interpreting biometric markers.

According to a press release from the company, you'll be able to place an order for the Evie Ring from November 20, exclusively through its own website for a retail price of $269 (around £220 / AU$420) and, refreshingly, no subscription fee. The ring will be available in sizes 5-12 and you can also choose to receive a complimentary sizing kit with your purchase.

Although initially announced at the tail end of 2022, the launch of the Eve Ring has been pushed back multiple times, as Movano sought full FDA approval to market the device as a medical product (which it hasn't yet received). According to Wareable, this meant calibrating heart rate and Sp02 readings to adhere to strict legislative guidelines.

One ring to rule them all?

The Movano Evie's main rival is the Oura Ring, which offers accurate readings of over 20 biometrics in a fashionable design that can be specified in a number of sizes and finishes. It's currently top of our guide to the best smart rings.

But the Oura isn't specifically marketed at women, with designs and color combos targeting all kinds of users, and this is where the Movano Evie Ring differs. It isn't yet clear exactly how the Evie will tailor its analysis of health-related biometrics for women, but this should become clearer now it's close to going on sale. 

What about Movano's attempts to get the Evie approved by the FDA in the US as a medical device? Right now, Movano is only saying that it's "working closely with the FDA to navigate the regulatory process for medical device clearances" after making its first submission earlier this year.

Still, if it does manage to achieve that feat, it would certainly be a boost to the perceived accuracy of its heart rate and SpO2 metrics. And Movano says that it won't affect the Evie's pricing, stating in a blog post that "the Evie Ring will be available for purchase at $269 with no additional fees or subscription costs, regardless of the FDA’s decision".

The Evie ring partners with an in-depth smartphone app (above) that looks at everything from heart health to detailing a clear menstrual cycle calendar with symptom and mood tracking, as well as period and ovulation estimations.

It looks like a neat solution that does away with the need to wear bulky fitness or smartwatches – we're looking forward to taking it for a spin soon.

Kaspersky and WeChat have been banned from Canadian government devices due to security concerns - although both companies think other motives are at play.

This isn’t the first time both apps have been prohibited on the North American continent, as they were previously banned on US government devices too.

Kaspersky, a well-known antivirus software suite, and WeChat, an instant messaging service, are rumored to have connections to Russia and China respectively, hence the decision from yet another western power to throw them out of official circles.

“An unacceptable level of risk to privacy and security"

In a statement released by the Treasury Board of Canada, both applications "present an unacceptable level of risk to privacy and security," due to their potential affiliations with governments that may seek to compromise the security of Canada and its allies.

Both WeChat and Kaspersky responded to the ban by blaming geopolitical tensions and ideology as its basis, rather than due to any security concerns. Kaspersky issued a statement saying, "there has been no evidence or due process to otherwise justify these actions," adding that the decision is merely "a response to the geopolitical climate rather than a comprehensive evaluation of the integrity of Kaspersky’s products and services.”

Similarly, at a press briefing, WeChat spokesperson Wang Wenbin said, “we hope that the Canadian side will discard ideological prejudices, abide by the principles of market economy and provide a fair, just and non-discriminatory business environment for Chinese enterprises."

In 2017, Kaspersky was banned from use on government devices in the US due to concerns surrounding the antivirus manufacturers links to Moscow. It has also been “confirmed as malicious” by the European Union and was banned from use within its infrastructure in 2018.

The Canadian Treasury Board further stated that, "the decision to remove and block the WeChat and the Kaspersky applications was made to ensure that government of Canada networks and data remain secure and protected and are in line with the approach of our international partners."

Starting in November, Meta will offer Facebook and Instagram users in the EU, EEA, (European Economic Area,) and Switzerland the opportunity to remove all advertisements from the platforms via a new subscription plan.

There will be two different prices available at launch depending on where you purchase a plan. People will be charged €9.99 a month on desktop, while on mobile, the price tag is bumped up to €12.99 a month. The higher cost on smartphones supposedly takes into account all “the fees that Apple and Google charge” developers through their respective app stores, according to the announcement. The company goes on to say it will not collect or use information from a subscribed account for targeted ads. There is one small catch: users must be at least 18 years old. Otherwise, they can't pay for a plan.

One subscription will cover all linked profiles in a person’s Account Center until March 1, 2024. After that date, Meta will begin charging “for each additional account”. Desktop plans will see a €6 increase whereas mobile plans will jump up €8. If you do the math, you're looking at an annual cost of roughly €240 a year for an ad-free experience on a single profile.

Astronomically high price tag

The pricing deeply concerns us, because if we did our math correctly, the final cost will be astronomically high. Think about it.

Let's say you have a Facebook and Instagram account and you want an ad-free experience on both desktop and mobile. To our understanding, you'll need to buy four separate subscriptions to cover all your bases on the two devices. A subscription after March 1 is about €20. So yearly, a European user may have to pay nearly €1,000 to remove all ads across desktop and mobile – assuming they only have one of each. Remember: costs increase for every extra profile. Keep in mind these numbers aren’t exact. We are rounding up, but we’re not too far off from the actual prices.

We reached out to Meta for clarification on the pricing. The announcement's wording was a little confusing. We also asked if there are plans to extend the subscription service to other countries, namely the US and UK. This story will be updated at a later time.

Forced to comply

The company explains it's launching the service as a way “to comply with evolving European regulations”. For the past couple of years, Meta has faced a lot of scrutiny from the EU over how the conglomerate handles user data. It’s gotten to the point where the Union passed the Digital Services Act “outlawing certain manipulative advertising practices” as well as slapping Meta with a $1.3 billion fine. 

Apparently, government regulators have ordered the company to give people a way to opt out of being bombarded with online ads. Meta claims the CJEU (Court of Justice of the European Union) recognizes the subscription model as a “valid form of consent”. It is good to see the company provide a way to skip the ads permanently.
Unfortunately, it's making the whole process painful to people’s wallets.
