A team of scientists in China claim to have replicated the performance of Google’s Sycamore quantum computer using traditional hardware, thereby undermining the suggestion the company has achieved quantum supremacy.

As reported by Science magazine, the scientists used a system comprised of 512 GPUs to complete the same calculation developed by Google to demonstrate it had passed the quantum supremacy milestone back in 2019.

The endeavor was led by statistical physicist Pan Zhang, who said his team’s supercomputer performed the calculation 10 billion times faster than Google had thought possible.

Quest for quantum supremacy

Quantum supremacy (or quantum advantage) can be defined as the point at which quantum computers can outstrip the maximum potential performance of classical supercomputers in a particular discipline.

Three years ago, Google announced it had achieved this feat with Sycamore, which it said took just 200 seconds to complete a statistical mathematics problem that would take a supercomputer 10,000 years to solve.

The problem was architected in such a way as to accentuate both the attributes of quantum computers, which exploit a phenomenon known as superposition to speed up calculations, and the limitations of traditional systems.

However, the claim was treated with suspicion by industry players from the beginning. The loudest critic was IBM, which claimed its Summit supercomputer would be capable of solving the same puzzle in two and a half days, given enough time to perfect the implementation. And now, a paper published by Zhang and his colleagues has cast further doubt over Google’s claims.

As explained by Science, to replicate the performance of Sycamore, the scientists first had to reconfigure the problem as a 3D mathematical array called a tensor network. This meant they could use the system’s GPUs to perform calculations in parallel.

The low level of accuracy of Sycamore’s computation gave the Chinese team additional room for manoeuvre. By minimizing the accuracy target, they were able to accelerate the calculation by hundreds of times, replicating the same level of performance the quantum machine had achieved.

Where next?

Although it appears Google may have been hasty in its celebrations, it is expected that the quantum supremacy milestone will fall sooner rather than later by virtue of the level of investment going into R&D activity in the space.

A lot of work is going into improving performance by increasing the number of qubits on a quantum processor, but researchers are also investigating opportunities related to qubit design, the pairing of quantum and classical computers, new refrigeration techniques and more.

Recently, IBM also suggested that focusing investment on error mitigation might bear significant fruit at this stage in the development of quantum systems, paving a route towards quantum supremacy. The ability to quiet certain sources of error will allow for increasingly complex quantum workloads to be executed with reliable results, the company says.

“At IBM Quantum, we plan to continue developing our hardware and software with this path in mind,” wrote the firm in a blog post.

“At the same time, together with our partners and the growing quantum community, we will continue expanding the list of problems that we can map to quantum circuits and develop better ways of comparing quantum circuit approaches to traditional classical methods to determine if a problem can demonstrate quantum advantage. We fully expect that this continuous path that we have outlined will bring us practical quantum computing.”

Google is tweaking the way quoted searches work on its search engine and improving Touch to Search on the mobile Chrome app.

Quoted search refers to when you place quotation marks around a search term and Google shows you results that have those exact words. The problem with the old style was that Google Search results didn’t show where the term appeared on the page. You had to dig around a little. But now, a small snippet will appear below search results, showing exactly where you can find your quoted term in bold text.

It appears the update is already in effect. We entered a search term surrounded by quotation marks onto Google Search and, sure enough, we got results with snippets displaying the phrase.

Originally hesitant

Google Search Software Engineer Yonghao Jin explained in a blog post on the updates that the reason the snippet wasn’t added earlier is because some web pages made it difficult to implement. A specific phrase may be behind a page menu or a different part of the website, so you have to spend time finding it. Despite this issue, Google decided to go through with the snippet update.

The snippet changes are not perfect nor universal, Google admits. If a web page has the quoted term multiple times, “the snippet may not show all of them if they are [too] far apart from each other.” Bolded terms will be mostly exclusive on Google Search for desktop. The announcement states the bold text won’t appear in snippets found on certain search modes like Images or News, nor on mobile.

We asked Google what other Search variations have the bold text in snippets. We’ll update this story if we get a response.

Mobile Chrome tweaks

As for Chrome mobile, its Touch to Search feature got a few new tweaks

Touch to Search allows users to highlight specific words or phrases to quickly search without having to exit the page. Upon updating Google Chrome on our mobile device, we can confirm the update is out.

The tool now has more granular control over how users interact with the feature. Within the Chrome Settings menu, you can enable the “Include surrounding text in Google results” option, which will include the text around a highlighted word in a Google search for better results. Accepted hand gestures have also been tweaked as Google states its recently standardized the process. Previously, you had to tap and hold down on a word to highlight it. Now, Chrome recognizes a single tap for highlighting.

The announcement also revealed Google is working on new Chrome features; one of which is adding suggestions based on the word or phrase you highlighted. If you highlight the word “San Francisco,” for example, you may see suggestions for “San Francisco events” or “San Francisco population.”

If you’re hungry for more Chrome news, we strongly recommend checking out our story on Chrome 104. The update fixes a total of 27 security flaws, seven of which were considered to be “high severity.”

The Samsung Galaxy S23 could be the most powerful phone you can buy when it hits the market early next year.

This comes from a leak on 91mobiles.com that suggests Samsung’s next mainstream flagship (read: flat phone) will use the as-yet-unannounced Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen2 chipset. The current King of Smartphone chips, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 only recently began shipping on flagship phones, including the new OnePlus 10T

Qualcomm is expected to announce its next-generation smartphone chipset later this year, but a November or December announcement would not give manufacturers time to get the chip into phones for the December holiday sales season. The Samsung Galaxy S23 will likely be announced in February 2023, if the history of Galaxy S phone launches is a guide. This timing would be perfect to offer the new class-leading chip.

Samsung may deserve to be rewarded with the status of being first to use the Snapdragon 8 Gen2. Recent news suggests Samsung is surrendering the next couple generations of Galaxy S phones entirely to Qualcomm’s chips, instead of using its own Samsung Exynos chipset in a small portion of the global shipment.

It is likely that every Galaxy S23 sold worldwide will pack the same chip, giving Qualcomm a huge win if that chip is the Snapdragon 8 Gen2.

The leaker, anonymous “Ice Universe” with a solid reputation for accuracy, also claims the Galaxy S23 will get a 5000 mAh battery. That would be great if such a large battery ends up in the smallest Galaxy S23, but we’ll withhold judgment until we’re sure. The current Galaxy S22 Ultra uses a 5000 mAh battery, while the smaller Galaxy S22 uses a middling 3700 mAh cell.

Analysis: Samsung plays to win

Not every phone manufacturer tries to launch a superlative device, the fastest or the longest-lasting or the best. Google calls its own Pixel "the smartest and fastest Pixel yet" on its own sales site. Samsung is not satisfied with beating itself, Samsung wants to beat everybody.

To do that, it needs to source the best parts. It must have the best screen (check), the best cameras (check?), and the best chipset inside. For a few years now, that means whatever Snapdragon chipset Qualcomm has launched recently. No matter what phones launch through the holidays with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chips, Samsung is ready to take the lead when the new year comes.
