Apple has revealed a new expansion that it hopes will make iPad devices open to more accessories than ever.

DriverKit, one of the many updates coming to iPadOS 16, will let manufacturers and developers create drivers specifically for iPads for the first time, and even build multi-platform drivers.

The tool has been available since 2019 on macOS Catalina, allowing third-party USB and Thunderbolt accessories to be connected to macOS devices, but is now coming to the iPad as well.

DriverKit for iPad

In a video announcing the launch, Apple said that DriverKit would bring a lot more flexibility and choice for developers and end-users alike, keeping exactly the same macOS experience for iPad users.

"DriverKit brought a new way to extend the system that is more reliable and secure, running in userspace," Apple's Souvik Banerjee noted.

Banerjee added that the launch was especially targeted at professional iPad users who often have to rely on external hardware that wasn't compatible with their device.

DriverKit API in iPadOS 16 will support USB, PCI, and audio devices, and if a developer has already created a driver with DriverKit on Mac, it can now be ported directly over to iPad with no changes required.

The news, which Banerjee noted is made possible "due to the power of the M1 chip" within some iPad models, means that users will be able to connect Thunderbolt audio interfaces such as microphones or headsets on the iPad for the first time.

Each driver will only work when the linked external device is connected, and any new drivers must be enabled manually in the iPad Settings app after being installed, where they can also be toggled on or off by the user at any time.

Once an app has been developed and submitted to the App Store, Apple will make sure only users with the correct drivers can download and use them in order to ensure there are no compatibility issues.

All iPads with M1 hardware will support DriverKit, which is available now.

The Apple M1 chip has been a wildly successful release for the Cupertino tech giant, but new research from MIT says that the chip powering everything from the Apple MacBook Pro to the latest iPad Air has a major security flaw that by its nature cannot be fixed in a security update.

The flaw was exposed in a new paper from MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) researchers and exploits something known as pointer authentification code (PAC). Essentially, PAC works by checking a digital signature to ensure that a program's code hasn't been changed maliciously.

PACMAN, the exploit that the MIT researchers designed, relies on a combination of software and hardware exploits that test whether a signature is accepted, and since there are only a finite number of possible signatures, it is possible for PACMAN to try them all, find out which one is valid, and then have a separate software exploit use that signature to bypass this final defense mechanism in the M1 chip.

The researchers tested this exploit against the system's kernel – the foundation of any operating system – and found that the exploit gave them kernel-level system access, meaning that it could give an attacker complete control over a system.

"The idea behind pointer authentication is that if all else has failed, you still can rely on it to prevent attackers from gaining control of your system," said MIT CSAIL We've shown that pointer authentication as a last line of defense isn't as absolute as we once thought it was,” said MIT CSAIL Ph.D. student Joseph Ravichandran, a co-lead author of the paper explaining the flaw, which will be presented to the International Symposium on Computer Architecture on June 18th. 

“When pointer authentication was introduced, a whole category of bugs suddenly became a lot harder to use for attacks. With PACMAN making these bugs more serious, the overall attack surface could be a lot larger," Ravichandran added.

And since the researchers used a microarchitecture exploit to bypass the PAC security measure, there is no way to "patch" this part of the exploit since it is literally hardwired into the chip itself. Still, the exploit can only work in conjunction with another software exploit. It can't do anything on its own.

Analysis: This sounds bad, but is it?

While this sounds like a serious problem, and it can be, it doesn't mean that everyone's new MacBook Air is open to any cybergang that wants to extort some bitcoin out of people.

The hardware exploit that the researchers used in this case is similar to the Spectre and Meltdown exploits seen in some Intel chips, and while those were a problem, it did not suddenly destroy everyone's computers. The fact is that the vast majority of people are not worth a cybercriminal's time. Why mess with your laptop when someone can lock up an oil pipeline and extort millions of dollars?

Plus, the PAC exploit attacks the last line of defense on an M1 chip (and not just M1 chips, but also any ARM-based processor that uses a PAC security measure, implicating some Qualcomm and Samsung chips as well).

"We want to thank the researchers for their collaboration as this proof of concept advances our understanding of these techniques," an Apple spokesperson told TechRadar. "Based on our analysis as well as the details shared with us by the researchers, we have concluded this issue does not pose an immediate risk to our users and is insufficient to bypass operating system security protections on its own."

This doesn't mean that such an exploit can't be used, but it means that an exploit will have to overcome every other security measure in the system, and Apple systems are fairly well-secured as it is. So while we're pretty sure that Apple will fix this issue in chips going forward, Apple M1 users don't necessarily need to panic over this exploit, especially if they take other preventative safety measures.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is launching a new service to help businesses deploy their mainframes in fully managed cloud-based runtime environments.

Dubbed the AWS Mainframe Modernization service, the cloud hosting giant said the new service gives businesses tools and resources to help plan implement migration and modernization.

The service come as mainframes hosted on on-premises servers remain an essential part of modern IT, with many of the largest organizations relying on them their heaviest lifting.

How does it work?

AWS said the new service deploys and manages the whole mainframe infrastructure for you, including launching the required network, load balancer, and configuring the log collection with tools like  Amazon CloudWatch among others.

The new service will also manage application versioning, deployments, and high availability dependency, which AWS claims will save users lots of time designing, testing, automating, and deploying their infrastructure.

The fully managed runtime apparently includes extensive automation and managed infrastructure resources that you can operate via the AWS console, the AWS Command Line Interface (CLI), and application programming interfaces (APIs).

Amazon says these features will remove the grut work of managing a complex infrastructure.

In addition, users of Agile and DevOps methodologies may be in luck

AWS Mainframe Modernization provides you with AWS CloudFormation templates to create continuous integration and continuous deployment pipelines according to AWS, and deploys and configures monitoring services to monitor the managed runtime.

AWS certainly hasn’t been slow when it comes to rolling out new features.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is looking to hit on-premises hardware vendors where it hurts with a new set of products and services, which offer increased integration with dedicated server hosting.

Amazon said the services works on a “only pay for what you use” model with no upfront costs, and that third party license costs are included in the hourly price.

AWS Mainframe Modernization service is available in the following AWS Regions: US East (N. Virginia), US West (Oregon), Asia Pacific (Sydney), Canada (Central), Europe (Frankfurt), Europe (Ireland), and South America (São Paulo).

Runtime environments for refactored applications, based on Blu Age, start at $2.50 per hour

New gameplay has been released for upcoming dark fantasy first-person shooter Witchfire, and it looks like a bundle of steampunk demons and roguelike shooting.

First revealed back in 2017, Witchfire has been treated to some in-game footage before, but none as substantial as this. While there’s little in the way of context, story, or plot to glean from the 2-minute video, there’s certainly a lot of violence.

The first-person shooter, which will reportedly feature roguelike elements, includes plenty of medieval-esque guns – from shock-charged revolvers to automatic crossbows – and plenty of infernal monsters to use them against. It looks like you’ll be navigating across a dark gothic fantasy world, slaying legions of demons that are sent your way.

That premise isn’t too surprising given the game’s director worked on People Can Fly’s 2004 shoot ‘em up Painkiller. While Witchfire looks different in several respects, it will certainly capture Painkiller’s frenetic, infernal shooting. It’s been a while since any FPS has been able to capture that game’s sumptuous arcade shooting – hopefully Witchfire will fit the bill.

It’s releasing on the Epic Games store and will launch in early access “soon”, according to the trailer.

At the Summer Game Fest, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2's gameplay was shown off for the first time. Players got a look at a story mission of the game, which showcased some genuinely impressive action combat. 

The footage shows off one of the story missions for the game, reintroducing players to the Modern Warfare world. The mission shows a covert team infiltrating a cargo ship. While it periodically goes loud, it starts as a fairly quiet, stealthy mission that predictably devolves into chaos.

Confusingly, this game is not a remake of the fan-favorite Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 from 2009, but rather a sequel to the 2019 Modern Warfare. That means that this footage was from an entirely new mission. 

That being said, there are clear parallels between this new mission and the original Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare's Crew Expendable mission where players infiltrate a ship and then run away as it sinks. The similarities here are very clear, and that likely isn't a mistake. That said, the trailer didn't go long enough to see if the ship goes down here. 

The game was initially revealed just a day before the presentation, with the sequel reimagining the original characters from the older franchise. Soap, Captain Price, Gaz, and Ghost are all present here. 

Infinity Ward remained fairly tight-lipped about the prospect of Warzone 2, but had teased that if fans look closely at the reveal trailer from yesterday, there are clues to be found.

We finally got a first look at gameplay for the upcoming sci-fi horror The Callisto Protocol at Summer Game Fest 2022, with a sumptuously gory new video giving us a glimpse of what we can expect when the game launches on December 2.

The world premiere trailer for The Callisto Protocol gave us major Dead Space vibes, with shadows creeping through dark, narrow hallways and mutated (and often pretty disgusting) creatures being brutally killed by our protagonist Sam. Check it out below:

But it's not just the creatures that are subject to brutal deaths. We also got a look at raw gameplay footage of the survival horror for the first time, which was captured on "next-gen hardware" and saw our protagonist being savaging chewed up by a fan. Ouch. 

The gameplay footage is pretty impressive and sees Sam making his way through corridors strewn with bloody bodies before encountering the likely cause: a mutated creature that the protagonist quickly removes the arms off with a couple of bullets. But that one is simply the starter, before a tankier creature comes hurtling down the corridor. Check it out below: 

It looks like The Callisto protocol is going to be very bloody and brutal and we're here for it. Let's just hope Sam doesn't have too many run ins with that fan...
