A large number of General Motors (GM) user accounts have been breached, and their personally identifiable information stolen, the company has confirmed in a recent announcement sent to affected customers. What’s more, the cybercriminals behind the attack tried to redeem rewards points found on those accounts, for gift cards.

GM users have had their accounts compromised with a credential stuffing attack that took place between April 11 and April 29. This is a brute force type of attack, in which the attackers try numerous combinations of usernames and passwords until one works. Sometimes, the attackers will also try username/password combinations stolen from other breached services, knowing that some people reuse the same credentials across a multitude of services.

The exact number of affected customers is unknown, although just in the state of California there are thought to have been around 5,000 victims.

No credit card data stolen

GM also says that this means its infrastructure was not tampered with, nor compromised.

"Based on the investigation to date, there is no evidence that the log in information was obtained from GM itself," GM was cited as saying in an announcement.

"We believe that unauthorized parties gained access to customer login credentials that were previously compromised on other non-GM sites and then reused those credentials on the customer's GM account."

In the breached accounts, the cybercriminals got access to things like full names, email addresses, physical addresses, phone numbers of family members, last known and favorite locations, as well as search and destination information. Car mileage history, service history, and emergency contracts, were also on display.

Things like Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, credit card information or bank account information were not compromised, as GM does not store this data, the company confirmed.

Since the attack, GM asked its users to reset their passwords, and told impacted customers to request credit reports from their banks.

Just as with Zola, whose customers have had their accounts compromised following a credential stuffing attack, General Motors does not support two-factor authentication, BleepingComputer states. Users can add a PIN that needs to be inputted for every purchase, though.

“Businesses need to understand passwords are the vulnerability,” commented Patrick McBride, CMO at Beyond Identity. It is no longer adequate to pass the blame off on customers because their passwords were obtained elsewhere. Businesses can mitigate the password vulnerability today, by using unphishable MFA. It is well beyond the time to blame users for the failures of businesses that don’t use adequate authentication methods when they already exist.”

Hundreds of thousands of endpoints running Kubernetes API have been exposed to the internet, and so could potentially be vulnerable to virus deployment and other cyberattacks, new research has found.

A report from nonprofit organization The Shadowserver Foundation recently scanned a total of 454,729 systems hosting the container orchestration system, and found 84% to be accessible via the internet, at least to some degree. That’s a total of 381,654 systems.

While being exposed to the internet does not automatically mean compromised, it is the first, and most important step, toward a data breach. What’s more all of these are most likely the result of misconfigurations, rather than intent.

Implementing authentication

After all, a recent security report found that most people using Kubernetes don’t know exactly what they’re doing.

"While this does not mean that these instances are fully open or vulnerable to an attack, it is likely that this level of access was not intended and these instances are an unnecessarily exposed attack surface," Shadowserver says in the blog post. "They also allow for information leakage on version and build."

Of all the accessible instances, 201,348 (53%) were located in the United States, the organization stated. It stressed that companies with internet-accessible Kubernetes API servers should implement some form of access authorization, or block access at the firewall, to prevent possible data breaches and cyberattacks.

Kubernetes is a ten-year-old Google product for container management, both on-prem and in the public cloud, maintained by the Cloud Native Computing Foundation.

Commercial versions are sold by multiple software companies. Amazon, Google, IBM, Microsoft, Oracle, Red Hat, SUSE, Platform9, and VMware, all offer Kubernetes-based platforms or infrastructure as a service (IaaS) that deploy Kubernetes.

It is extremely popular, being used by most companies worldwide, according to market analysts Statista.

White hat hackers have managed to compromise Windows 11 three times in a single day during a recently held hacking contest, raising questions on the software's security.

The third and final day of the 2022 Pwn2Own Vancouver hacking contest saw three separate participants used zero-day vulnerabilities to crack open Microsoft’s latest operating system.

The first contestant was nghiadt12 from Viettel Cyber Security, who abused a Windows 11 escalation of privilege exploit, via Integer Overflow. The second and the third ones were Bruno Pujos and vnhthp1712 from REverse Tactics, who used Use-After-Free and Improper Access Control vulnerabilities to escalate privileges on the target endpoint.

Hacking a car

Besides three successful attempts, there was also an unsuccessful attempt by Team DoubleDragon, which failed to demo the exploit within the deadline.

Ubuntu Desktop was also successfully hacked once, by STAR Labs' Billy Jheng Bing-Jhong it was added. Use-After-Free exploit was used in this attack, as well.

During the entire Pwn2Own 2022, a total of 17 competitors hacked Windows 11 multiple times, but also Ubuntu Desktop, Apple Safari, Oracle Virtualbox and Mozilla Firefox.

Since 2019, the competition has added a brand new category - automotive infotainment systems. This year, such a system in the Tesla 3 car was hacked. According to the media, a group called Sznactiv demonstrated a sandbox escape exploit in the infotainment system, allowing the attacker to assume control over the built-in computing device.

The group was awarded $75,000 for the bug, but said that it could also be used to launch stage-two attacks with malware that could be a lot more destructive, and could even allow for full device takeover. Completely hacking a Tesla Model 3 earns the participant $600,000 and the car itself, Kurritu.org reported.

More than a million dollars was paid out in rewards for the successful hacks, with vendors now having 90 days to fix the issues. Should they fail to meet the deadline, Trend Micro’s Zero Day Initiative will publicly disclose the flaws.

Experts have uncovered a new cryptocurrency scam making the rounds using a deepfake video of Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

Threat actors have created a fake cryptocurrency exchange platform called BitVex that claims investors can get up to 30% returns on their crypto deposits when, in fact, all they do is steal the money that gets deposited.

At press time, the site was still up and running, at bitvex[.]org. Explaining what makes this “exchange” different, the site says: “We provide you with the most profitable and reliable trading contracts, making daily payments on all contracts in cryptocurrency. Start trading cryptocurrencies and stablecoins today and get your first payout tomorrow.”

Share your thoughts on Cybersecurity and get a free copy of the Hacker's Manual 2022. Help us find how businesses are preparing for the post-Covid world and the implications of these activities on their cybersecurity plans. Enter your email at the end of this survey to get the bookazine, worth $10.99/£10.99.

It also showcases testimonials from the likes of CZ (Binance founder and CEO), and Cathie Wood (founder, CEO and CIO of Ark Invest). Elon Musk was listed as CEO. To make the scam more convincing, the site also lists “profits” generated by the exchange’s “users”.

 Poor deepfake

It is also being promoted with a deepfake video of Elon Musk, in which the eccentric billionaire and entrepreneur is seen discussing the business. The video does very little to add to the legitimacy of the whole ordeal, as the production of the multimedia is comically bad.

Still, the fraudsters have shared it via YouTube, meaning it can break into other people’s channels to distribute it in more places, with an Arabic gaming video channel already found to have been hijacked to promote the scam.

Proving that every job requires a bit of talent, scamming included, is the fact that the campaign brought in minimal earnings for the fraudsters. Taking a deeper look, BleepingComputer found a number of wallet addresses that the “exchange” uses, and with the exception of the Bitcoin address which, at press time, holds no more than $1.4k in the cryptocurrency, the have been no payments made.

Cryptocurrency investors are advised not to keep their coins on an exchange, but rather move them to a non-custodial wallet. Their accounts should be protected by strong passwords, and security keys, while their devices should be kept up to date, behind firewalls, and with a strong antivirus solution installed.

Memorial Day TV sales FAQs

When is Memorial Day 2022?

Memorial Day is an American federal holiday that always falls on the last Monday in May to honor the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military.

This year, Memorial Day falls on Monday, May 30, with the long weekend kicking off on Friday, May 27.

Is Memorial Day a good time to buy a TV?

Generally speaking, Memorial Day is a great time to buy a TV - depending on what kind of display you're looking to buy. Memorial Day TV sales usually focus on older models and budget sets from brands like Vizio, TCL, and Insignia, which means you can score record-low prices from retailers like Amazon, Best Buy, and Walmart. You can find premium OLED and QLEDs on sale, but these TV deals will usually be older models, so you're not going to score a massive discount on an all-new 2022 TV.

Memorial Day TV sales: what to expect

The Memorial Day TV sales are always a popular category during the holiday weekend, with a range of 4K, QLED, and OLED displays on sale. May is already a fantastic time to score a cheap TV deal thanks to spring clearance sales from retailers like Best Buy and Walmart. We typically see TV bargains from last year's sets - which means you can find a great TV from brands like Samsung, LG, and Vizio at a super cheap price.

Retailers also typically offer impressive discounts on newer TV sets, but these discounts are few and far between and won't last long. We recommend that if you see a price you like on a 2022 display, you should add it to your cart and check out before it's too late.

We saw several budget sets on sale from brands like TCL, Insignia, and Toshiba from Walmart and Amazon. We did spot some premium displays on sale from Best Buy, but those bargains didn't drop till Memorial Day proper.
