When is Memorial Day 2022?

Memorial Day is an American federal holiday that always falls on the last Monday in May to honor the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military.

This year, Memorial Day falls on Monday, May 30, with the long weekend kicking off on Friday, May 27.

Retailers will start offering discounts starting in May, but you'll find the best deals during the official Memorial Day holiday weekend.

If you're looking for small appliance deals, Amazon, Walmart, and Best Buy will be discounting coffee makers, air fryers, and vacuums, to name a few. Despite constant warnings from their IT departments and CTOs, high-ranking business executives have the same equally unhealthy password habits as many other internet users do.

To learn more about the password habits of business owners, CEOs and other c-suite executives, NordPass partnered with independent researchers who analyzed over 290m data breaches worldwide. Together, they grouped passwords according to job title and industry with organizations in technology, finance, construction, healthcare and hospitality experiencing the most security incidents.

Share your thoughts on Cybersecurity and get a free copy of the Hacker's Manual 2022. Help us find how businesses are preparing for the post-Covid world and the implications of these activities on their cybersecurity plans. Enter your email at the end of this survey to get the bookazine, worth $10.99/£10.99.

Among the various executive roles examined in NordPass’ research, using easily hackable passwords that mainly include sequence combinations of numbers or letters was a visible trend among business executives.

Some of the poor passwords observed include but are not limited to “1q2w3e,” “12345,” “11111,” and “qwerty.” However, the winner across all categories remains “123456” (used over 1m times) with the password “password” (used over 700k times) coming in second.

Coming up with strong and unique passwords

NordPass’ research also found that top-level executives often use names or mythical creatures as an inspiration when creating passwords as opposed to using a password generator to create strong and unique passwords.

The most popular mythical creatures used when coming up with passwords are “dragon” and “monkey” while the most widely chosen names used in passwords are “Tiffany,” “Charlie,” “Michael,” and “Jordan” which may or may not be a reference to the legendary basketball player.

CEO of NordPass, Jonas Karklys provided further insight the company’s research and how all internet users share common ground when it comes to passwords, saying:

“It is unbelievable how similar we all think, and this research simply confirms that — what we might consider being very original, in fact, can place us in the list of most common. Everyone from gamer teenagers to company owners are targets of cybercrimes, and the only difference is that business entities, as a rule, pay a higher price for their unawareness.”

To avoid falling victim to a data breach as the result of poor password hygiene, NordPass recommends using a password manager to securely store all of the passwords for your online accounts and enabling multi-factor authentication (MFA) for an additional layer of security.

The job site and professional social networking platform LinkedIn has added a new feature that allows users to add a website link to their profiles.

Once this new feature rolls out, users whose profiles have Creator Mode enabled will be able to add a link that will appear at the top of their profiles beneath their user name and description and above their follower and connections.

It’s worth noting that LinkedIn users that decide to disable Creator Mode will no longer have a website link show up in their profiles.

For those unfamiliar, the Microsoft-owned company’s Creator Mode allows users to add hashtags to indicate the topics they post about the most and also moves a user’s Featured and Activity sections to the top of their profiles so that they can more prominently display their content. The feature also changes the “Connect” button to “Follow” to help creators on LinkedIn build a following.

LinkedIn Link in Profile

In a recent announcement, global head of community and creators at LinkedIn, Andrei Santalo explained that the ability to add links to a user’s profile is aimed at increasing visibility for their businesses, personal websites, events or portfolios.

If you already have Creator Mode enabled on the platform, to add a link at the top of your profile you just need to click on the edit icon (depicted as a pencil) of your introduction, scroll down to the website section, add your URL and link text and click save.

While this isn’t the biggest update to LinkedIn yet, it does provide an easy way for creators to generate traffic to their websites from the platform while the link’s anchor text can be used as a call-to-action. Keep in mind though that these links will likely be nofollow links.

Depending on the success of this feature, LinkedIn could decide to expand it to users whose profiles haven’t been set to Creator Mode. However, enabling Creator Mode doesn’t cost anything and can easily be done right from your profile.

Apple has allegedly abused its dominant market position to prevent other mobile payment apps from accessing NFC on its devices according to the European Commission.

The EU’s executive arm has sent a Statement of Objections to the iPhone maker in which it claims that Apple Pay benefited from the company’s decision to prevent mobile wallet app developers from accessing necessary hardware and software.

European Commissioner for Competition, Margrethe Vestager explained in a press release how Apple had stifled competition by preventing third-party access to NFC on its mobile devices, saying:

“Mobile payments play a rapidly growing role in our digital economy. It is important for the integration of European Payments markets that consumers benefit from a competitive and innovative payments landscape. We have indications that Apple restricted third-party access to key technology necessary to develop rival mobile wallet solutions on Apple's devices. In our Statement of Objections, we preliminarily found that Apple may have restricted competition, to the benefit of its own solution Apple Pay. If confirmed, such conduct would be illegal under our competition rules.”

Limiting competition by restricting access to NFC

Apple Pay is Apple’s own mobile wallet solution on iPhone and iPad that can be used to enable mobile payments in physical stores and online and just like its hardware and software, the company controls every aspect of the user experience in its ecosystem including mobile wallet developers’ access to it.

Specifically, Apple Pay is the only mobile wallet solution that is able to access NFC input on iOS and iPadOS. However, NFC is a standardized technology which is available in almost all POS systems in stores and provides a more seamless and secure payment experience.

Although a full investigation still needs to be carried out, the European Commission currently believes that Apple’s dominant position in the mobile wallet market on iOS restricts competition by only allowing Apple Pay to access NFC. If confirmed, the company would be in violation of Article 102 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU) that prohibits companies from abusing their dominant market position.

The European Commission also points out that its Statement of Objections is not a sign that Apple is guilty but merely a formal step into investigating whether or not Apple has violated EU antitrust laws.

We’ll have to wait for the European Commission to carry out its full investigation but Apple could be facing a hefty fine and the company would likely be required to open up NFC to other mobile wallet developers if found guilty.

Apple Music is now available on Roku devices and video player platforms as an app that you can get via Roku's Channel Store.

This update brings over 90 million songs and 30,000 expertly curated playlists with real-time song lyrics straight to Roku owners. The deal will also bring Apple Music Radio, music videos in 4K resolution, and access to all the original content that can be found on the service.

And the cherry on top is a one-month free trial of Apple Music if you purchase the service through Roku’s service. While the roll-out is stuffed with features, there are some glaring omissions from Apple.

Missing high quality

Despite the 4K music videos and support for the Streambar Pro, Roku will not support Apple Music’s unique audio features. Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos and Lossless Audio are unavailable as confirmed by a Roku representative. This includes dynamic head tracking on AirPods.

Apple Music’s audio formats alongside its curated playlists are what set it apart from other music streaming services. Lossless Audio ensures songs retain the high quality that the artist intended them to have, while Spatial Audio allows for an immersive experience.

Recently Apple Music added a bunch of DJ mixes in Spatial Audio with exclusive content. Unfortunately for Roku owners, they’ll be missing out on having a nightclub in their homes.

Gradually rolling out

Apple is pretty late to the party as Roku has been housing a lot of other music streaming apps for years now, including rival Spotify, which has been on the platform since 2012.

In recent years, Roku has been incrementally adding Apple streaming services like Apple TV Plus in 2021. Apple’s sheepishness could be attributed to Roku’s monetization practices where the company retains 20 percent of total revenue through transactional channels which Apple Music falls under.

Given that Roku has been growing substantially in recent years, such as earning $734 million during Q1 2022, perhaps Apple decided to relinquish at least a portion of its control just to be a part of the fast-growing Roku platform.
