Although the IRS has dropped its plans to use video selfies to verify the identities of taxpayers, this year's tax season is still set to be a bit more chaotic than usual.

Originally the government agency had planned to use the third-party identity verification provider ID.me as part of its efforts to require taxpayers to create new online accounts. However, following backlash, the IRS reversed course despite its $86m contract with the firm.

Now though, the IRS has announced that taxpayers that don't want to submit biometric data to sign up for an online account with the government agency and will have another option to verify their identities. It seems the IRS is taking a page out of ID.me's book as the identity verification firm recently gave public sector employees working for the government the option to verify their identities with a human agent.

Taxpayers will be now able to verify their identities via a live virtual interview to create an account on the IRS' website.

A short-term solution

In addition to virtual interviews with IRS agents, taxpayers will still have the option to verify their identity automatically through ID.me's self-assistance tool if they choose.

At the same time, new requirements have been put in place for those that choose this option to ensure that the images they provide are deleted after their account has been created. Meanwhile, any existing biometric data from taxpayers that have already created an IRS Online Account will be permanently deleted over the course of the next few weeks.

The IRS remains intent on having taxpayers verify their identities to access its online services which is why the government agency is developing its own authentication tool. The IRS provided further details on its upcoming tool which will be available next year in a press release, saying:

“While this short-term solution is in place for this year’s filing season, the IRS will work closely with partners across government to roll out Login.Gov as an authentication tool. The General Services Administration is currently working with the IRS to achieve the security standards and scale required of Login.Gov, with the goal of moving toward introducing this option after the 2022 filing deadline.”

Even though the IRS is moving away from using ID.me, this tax season is likely to be quite tedious for taxpayers who also still need to worry about tax-related identity theft.

The rumors were true. OnwardMobility's silence was a sign of much deeper problems and now the company that revived the BlackBerry hardware name has shut its doors and ended its plans for delivering a 5G BlackBerry device.

The company announced the news on its website  on Tuesday:

"...it is with great sadness that we announce that OnwardMobility will be shutting down, and we will no longer be proceeding with the development of an ultra-secure smartphone with a physical keyboard."

The OnwardMobility team adds that "this wasn't the outcome we worked and hoped for."

Analysis: OnwardMobility's BlackBerry plans died on the vine

The disappointing BlackBerry news comes almost two years after the Texas-based company purchased the BlackBerry brand name and announced plans to build a secure, 5G BlackBerry device. More importantly, they promised to include a signature physical keyboard. There are, in our estimation, essentially zero 5G phones with physical QWERTY keyboards.

OnwardMobility's demise may mark the true end of the BlackBerry brand across phones and services. Earlier this year, BlackBerry (the Canadian company), sold off most of its key patents. After that, they shut down the BlackBerry OS service that supported original BlackBerry phones (before the Android versions, which were built by yet a different partner).

It's a sad end to a storied history as one of the most useful and forward-leaning mobile brands in history. Sure, Blackberry was caught flat-footed when the original iPhone came along in 2007. However, up until that moment, BlackBerry phones were the most important mobile brand in business and for consumers. Hard to believe that owning BlackBerry phone in 2005 was a considered status symbol.

By the time BlackBerry arrived on Android in 2015, it and the physical keyboard that still adorned some devices was seen as something of a curiosity.

Now, the brand name will fade into our collective memory of a time when we were so addicted to our BlackBerry phones that we called them "CrackBerries".

Early in 2021, Nvidia released LHR (light hash rate) versions of its graphics cards, starting with the RTX 3060, in the interest of keeping cryptocurrency miners from buying up all the stock before gamers could get their hands on them. However, it looks like that plan just went up in smoke.

New software posted on GitHub by user SergeyDev allegedly gets around the hash rate limiter, making the graphics cards much more powerful for mining purposes. The speeds of each unlocked GPU have been reported by Chinese tech website MyDrivers, and spotted by the folks over at VideoCardz and it appears that all of the Nvidia graphics cards are back at full mining strength.

The software is essentially a third-party graphics driver and BIOS, so this would definitely fall in the "download at your own risk" category, but if it works, it could make all these Nvidia cards freshly attractive to Bitcoin miners, reduce supplies and send graphics card prices on the rise, again.

We don't test cryptocurrency mining performance here at TechRadar, so we can't speak to the efficacy of this software. But either way, it's unlikely that Nvidia will be able to easily stamp out this workaround, as any existing graphics cards on the market would need a BIOS update to counter it.

We've reached out to Nvidia for comment, and we'll update this story if and when we hear anything back from Team Green. But this isn't the first time this has happened and it looks like graphics cards may start to become more expensive soon – as hard as that is to hear.

Large screen smart TV deals

If you're after larger smart TV deals, we should warn you, they don't come cheap. However, if you're after 65 to 85-inch TVs- we'd recommend heading over to John Lewis, Currys and Amazon as they seem to stock more models than most UK retailers.

If you'd like a headstart on some of the very finest TVs money can buy, be sure to take a look at our guides for the best 55-inch TV or if you're going large we've got the best 65-inch TV models covered too.

How to tell if cheap TVs are worth it

Cheap TVs can often wow with price tags but disappoint once they're at home and plugged in, however there are ways to find 4K TV deals that bring premium experiences down to lower price ranges. Sacrificing a few features you won't use to prioritise the ones you will is an easy way to get started, but finding that perfect mix might prove difficult.

On the other hand, even displays costing between £300 and £400 are often considered to be cheap TVs, so you'll want to make sure you're getting your money's worth with your new setup. That's where these TV deals come in handy - you can easily get features well above your price range included in your new cheap smart TV if you know when and where to deal hunt.

Nowadays, you'll want to be picking up a 4K TV if you're looking to spend within this price range. Straight HD and HD-ready TV deals are still kicking around some retailers and, for the price you're paying for the previous wave of technology, you could well be picking up a 4K display instead. As the price scale rises, you'll be picking up higher pixel density, better colour differentiation, deeper dynamic range, and better upscaling from pricier units. It's worth checking out the various display specifications to make sure your cheap TV matches up to what others are offering at that particular price point.

Or, you could let us do all of that for you with the 4K TV deals listed here.

Are 4K TV deals getting cheaper?

As the technology progresses, and even leaps into the world of 8K, 4K TV deals are getting cheaper and cheaper, meaning more households than ever are able to afford premium displays like the ones highlighted here. Not only does that show just how cheap these 4K TV deals have become in recent years, but it also means there's more content being made to be displayed on these 4K TVs available as well. So, not only are these sets getting cheaper, but there's also plenty more to watch on them as well.

How to find the best TV deals

We've found that the best TV deals usually come from a few retailers in particular - Very regularly discounts their cheaper models, Currys holds excellent prices on Philips Ambilight displays, and John Lewis can offer up invaluable peace of mind with their extensive warranty guarantees.

So, you know where to shop but if you're not seeing any particularly enticing offers -you might be searching at the wrong time. The best TV deals are usually between November and January, when Black Friday and holiday sales are discounting premium displays left and right. However, you'll also find the summer sales fruitful as well.

What to look for in smart TV deals

The vast majority of TV deals on offer right now will offer Smart TV functionality. It's now become the norm for your TV to offer at least a limited selection of streaming and on demand apps, but the quality of this experience will vary between models. Cheap smart TVs will typically send you home with preset apps like Netflix, YouTube, BBC iPlayer, All 4, and UK TV Play among other everyday streamers.

However, if you spend a little more you'll start finding Alexa compatibility, more niche app options like Disney Plus, CrunchyRoll, and NowTV, and a faster, slicker operating system. You'll find more options for connecting extra services on more premium smart TV deals.

Intel has offered a closer look at its new range of specialized Bitcoin mining processors.

First unveiled earlier this month, Intel's first-generation Bonanza Mine (BM) chip, BMZ1, was the subject of an in-depth presentation at semiconductor conference ISSCC 2022.

At the show, Intel revealed that each BMZ1 die measures 4.14 x 3.42mm and houses 258 mining engines operating at an “ultra-low” 355mV voltage. These tiny chips are each said to soak up 7.5W of power and reach up to 137GHash/s.

The firm says it can pack 300 BMZ1 chips into a 3,600W ASIC miner capable of achieving a respectable performance of roughly 40THash/sec. The system can also be set to operate under different performance profiles, which yield different levels of energy efficiency.

Intel enters the Bitcoin game

Although the creator of Bitcoin originally envisioned that mining would take place on standard desktop CPUs, it quickly became clear there were more effective and efficient ways to mine. Today, all professional mining operations rely on ASIC devices, powered by chips built specifically to compute the SHA-256 hashing algorithm on which Bitcoin is based.

The market for ASIC machines is currently dominated by players such as Bitmain and MicroBT, but the emergence of specialized Intel silicon may throw a cat amongst the pigeons.

Although Intel focused exclusively on BMZ1 during its ISSCC presentation, the company has previously revealed that second-generation BMZ2 chips are already available to select customers, including BLOCK (née Square) and Argo Blockchain.

So while Intel’s 3,600W ASIC miner is some way off the performance of the best hardware from Bitmain (whose most performant miner achieves 140THash/s at 3010W), it’s possible the mysterious BMZ2 will be far more competitive.

Little is known about the company’s intended approach to bringing BM to market, but it is expected that Intel will sell the chips to third-parties who are developing their own custom mining systems. Equally, it’s possible Intel will choose to bring its own BM-powered mining systems to market as standalone products too.

Although the company’s mining chips remain shrouded in secrecy, the early promise shown by its first-generation ASICs and the formation of a dedicated internal team to support the endeavor suggests there is plenty more to come from Intel.

Fresh rumors have predicted that we're going to get as many as seven new Apple Mac models this year, but it isn't the number of releases that's surprised me – it's that the Mac Pro has been included in that list.

Rumors about upcoming Apple product releases are hardly unexpected, given the success and popularity of its ecosystem. But with Bloomberg's Mark Gurman anticipating that the mighty Mac Pro desktop will be upgraded with Apple silicon alongside, well, the entire Mac family, a whole new can of worms has just been opened.

Most of this current batch of speculation started when several supply chain leaks gave us some insight into a likely 13-inch MacBook Pro refresh. Gurman, a recognized Apple analyst, has since suggested that we can expect up to seven new Mac models in 2022 that will all feature some version of the M1 SoC (system-on-a-chip), one of which being the powerful Mac Pro desktop workstation.

Specifically, Gurman predicts that "a half-sized Mac Pro, the first with Apple Silicon, with the equivalent of either two or four M1 Max chips" could be announced this year alongside "super-powered versions of the M1 Max". These chips will come in two varieties: one that doubles the M1 Max’s capabilities to 20 CPU cores and 64 graphics cores, and one that quadruples it to a whopping 40 CPU cores and 128 graphics cores.

Before we jump the gun, we really want to drill home that this information is purely speculative for now, even if it comes from a trusted source. The capabilities of the M1 SoC are well documented, having impressed us so much that we stuck the M1-powered MacBook Air at the top of our list of the best laptops you can buy right now, but there's still an issue that makes its inclusion within a Mac Pro desktop a little perplexing.

There's a reason that these desktops are still rocking an Intel system, and it has nothing to do with the processor, and everything to do with its support for discrete graphics cards and creative applications. You can configure the Mac Pro with workstation-class GPUs like the AMD Radeon Pro W6800X (in fact, you get it configured with two), alongside a whopping 8TB of SSD storage and, uh, 1.5TB of DDR4 RAM.

Simply put, this is designed to be a complete beast, equipped to tackle anything that can't be served by a MacBook Pro laptop. The top-end configuration costs almost $50k, so it's safe to say that this isn't a product that everyone will be queueing up for. Which is why I'm not convinced that Apple will be able to match the power of a workstation graphics card using a SoC (system-on-a-chip).

What's cooking in Apple's kitchen?

Apple M1 Processor

That said, I'm more than happy to eat my words. The M1 absolutely knocked the socks off of Apple critics back in November 2020, proving that ARM-based systems have a bright future ahead of them and subsequently dragging rival offerings like Windows-on-ARM through the proverbial dirt, so I'm expecting big things.

This also isn't the first time that rumors have appeared about Apple creating a 128-core GPU, though most previous speculation has painted this as an actual video card that would slot into a PCIe slot.

Support would have also been an issue this time last year, as ARM-based systems lacked native support for a lot of the applications that creatives would be running. But app developers have really pulled things out of the bag, with support either already implemented, or at least in the works, for many software packages that need some hefty graphics prowess to run, such as Unreal Engine and Zbrush.

For apps like Maya where no support has been announced, emulation like Rosetta 2 works well as a suitable workaround. This doesn't mean that support for ARM wouldn't be an issue, just that it's far less of one than I would have anticipated 12 months ago.

There are some other considerations that need to be made: If the target market for such a powerful GPU (integrated into a processor or not) is so niche, why waste so much money on developing one when it could simply maintain its current relationship with AMD? What does Apple think it could offer users that hasn't been covered by either AMD or Nvidia?

This leaves a few outcomes: either Apple will retain its current relationship with AMD for desktop graphics, or Apple is developing its own discrete graphics cards. Or, alternatively, the upcoming M1 Max additions are going to blow our minds.

Regardless, it's likely that the current version of the Mac Pro will be around for some time, as this anticipated silicon-powered version is described as a 'half-sized' Mac Pro, though we would hope that the configurations get an update to keep them in line with the latest generation of hardware like DDR5 RAM.

Between this and the rumored 27-inch iMac Pro said to be in development, it seems Apple really does want to cover the entire spectrum of computing, regardless of how small the target demographic will be. I'm keen to see what can be made possible with a SoC in workstations, providing it won't cost more than a car to buy one.

Latest Tech News

The Chinese tech giant Xiaomi has already unveiled the first few phones in its latest flagship generation, so we've seen the Xiaomi 12, but there's still been no official confirmation of the highest-end model.

That doesn't mean the Xiaomi 12 Ultra isn't on its way, though, because we've heard enough leaks and rumors to be pretty certain that this super-fancy top-price smartphone will come along sooner or later.

Phone fans should be excited about this upcoming handset because Xiaomi will use it as a showcase for the top specs and features its design team has cooked up. You can find everything we know so far listed below.

The Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra released in 2021 had a huge screen, three super-powerful cameras, a second display on the back, a snappy processor and quick charging. However, its high price made it a tough sell for many people.

So while last year's Ultra was impressive, it wasn't perfect, and there are lots of changes the Xiaomi 12 Ultra could make to get a better score from us. That's why we've also written up a short wish list for the new phone.

Cut to the chase

  • What is it? The top-end member of the Xiaomi 12 family
  • When is it out? Possibly Q3 2022
  • How much will it cost? Around £1,199 / AU$1,799 (that’s roughly $1,600)

Xiaomi 12 Ultra price and availability

Some of the Xiaomi 12 range has been unveiled – so far that's the 12, the 12 Pro and the 12X – but we are still expecting many more members of the range, including the 12 Ultra, the 12 Lite and, eventually, a 12T and 12T Pro too.

Judging by the Mi 11's release schedule, we could see the Xiaomi 12 Ultra unveiled in March or April when the standard phone gets launched globally (as it's currently only available in China). We'll have to wait and see though, as Xiaomi's Ultra phones have seen just two iterations so far, so it's hard to predict a pattern.

It's worth pointing out that one source thinks there won't be a Xiaomi 12 Ultra, as apparently the brand only has one top-tier phone coming in 2022 and that's the Xiaomi Mi Mix 5. We haven't heard this claim repeated much, though, so take it with a pinch of salt.

More recent rumors have suggested that the Xiaomi 12 Ultra will launch in Q3 2022, which suggests July, August or September will be the big month.

Regarding price, well, 'expensive' would aptly cover it, though admittedly that's rather vague.

The Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra was supremely pricey, costing £1,199 / AU$1,799 (that’s roughly $1,600), which made it comparable to the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra or iPhone 13 Pro Max. We wouldn't expect much to change this year.

Currently, leaks suggest the Xiaomi 12 Ultra will be just as expensive, judging by the specs at least, as we haven't heard any actual price leaks yet.

News and rumors

Possibly the most important piece of Xiaomi 12 Ultra information we've seen doesn't come from a leak, but from other phones: the Xiaomi 12 and 12 Pro. The company has already released some of the series' non-Ultra offerings and commonalities between them may point to features in the Ultra.

Both the standard and Pro phones have the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset, 120Hz refresh rate screens, 32MP front-facing cameras, 50MP main cameras, 50W wireless powering and a minimum of 8GB RAM and 128GB storage, going up to 12GB and 256GB respectively. We could see these same specs in the Ultra.

Moreover, the Pro has a 6.7-inch 2K screen, three 50MP rear cameras (including telephoto and ultra-wide snappers alongside the main) and 120W wired charging. It'd be curious if the Ultra presented a downgrade in any of those areas.

Now let's move on to leaks. They all focus on one aspect of the Xiaomi 12 Ultra: its camera bump. We've seen an aluminum mold of the phone, a digital render of it and a case for the device too, and each shows a circular camera bump that's absolutely huge – expect loads of rear cameras.

One other intriguing piece of information is that there could also be a Xiaomi 12 Ultra Enhanced. We don't know anything about the device save its name, but judging by that name, it's an even higher-end version of the 'standard' Ultra.
