Apple acknowledged that AirTags and the 'Find My' tracking app have been used for "unwanted tracking" of individuals and is promising to make changes to the product and the way it alerts users of any "unknown accessories" that could be tracking them without their knowledge.

AirTags are meant to be paired with personal items that can be easily lost, like keys, a wallet, or a purse, but they've also been used to track individuals without their knowledge. What's more, recent reports found that modified AirTags and other similar tracking devices with safety features disabled were readily available for sale online

Apple's announcement doesn't include any updates on concrete, proactive solutions to the problem, instead indicating that Apple is working with law enforcement (when supplied with a subpoena) to prosecute offenders and will also update the Find My app with new setup language. Whenever an AirTag is paired with an Apple device, the user will see a warning that tracking individuals without their knowledge is a crime.

Apple is also updating its unwanted tracking support documentation to better explain existing safety features.

"This page now includes additional explanations of which Find My accessories may trigger an unwanted tracking alert, more visuals to provide specific examples of such alerts, and updated information on what to do after receiving an alert, including instructions for disabling an AirTag, AirPods, or Find My network accessory," the announcement says.

"There are also links to resources individuals can use if they feel their safety is at risk, such as the National Network to End Domestic Violence and the National Center for Victims of Crime."

Apple has good ideas for addressing safety concerns, but they won't be ready for a while

The most promising updates Apple discusses in the announcement are precision tracking to better help users locate an unknown AirTag, which might even integrate an AR solution to help guide you to the exact location of the AirTag.

The announcement also acknowledges the threat of someone muffling or tampering with the speaker on an AirTag, and says that the company is investigating using modified alerts on your iPhone to overcome the problem.

It also says it is working on refining the system logic used to identify unwanted tracking, so that people can be notified earlier that there is an unknown AirTag present.

All of these are good ideas, but they don't ultimately get to the fundamental problem: A device small enough to track your keys can easily be concealed to track you without your knowledge. From that starting point, everything else is strictly mitigation, and while those mitigation efforts might eventually be foolproof, it could be a while until Apple implements them.

A geomagnetic storm caused by solar activity took out 40 of SpaceX's Starlink satellites last week, highlighting the risk that solar storms present as we continue to clutter up low Earth orbit.

SpaceX revealed the mishap earlier this week in a blog post on its site, saying that while the solar storm event didn't directly wreck the satellites itself, it essentially slammed the brakes on their orbit, causing them to fall back into Earth's atmosphere.

"These storms cause the atmosphere to warm and atmospheric density at our low deployment altitudes to increase," SpaceX said. "In fact, onboard GPS suggests the escalation speed and severity of the storm caused atmospheric drag to increase up to 50 percent higher than during previous launches."

Fortunately, the loss of the satellites poses no danger to those of us on the ground or threatens other orbiting satellites, since the solar event occurred when the satellites being deployed were much lower than the standard orbiting altitude for most low Earth orbit (LEO) objects.

"The deorbiting satellites pose zero collision risk with other satellites and by design demise upon atmospheric reentry—meaning no orbital debris is created and no satellite parts hit the ground," the company said. "This unique situation demonstrates the great lengths the Starlink team has gone to ensure the system is on the leading edge of on-orbit debris mitigation."

Analysis: it's a dangerous business, stepping out our front door

For nearly all of human history, humanity has been enveloped in a protective magnetic field that keeps the highly charged particles blowing off the Sun from effectively sand-blasting our planet's life-sustaining atmosphere further out into space.

For us on the ground, our long-standing interaction with solar winds come in the form of auroras in the northern and southern latitudes, but that has been about it.

It wasn't until the invention of electrical and electronic equipment that we suddenly had to worry about the effects of solar storms, since sufficiently powerful coronal mass ejections from the Sun are powerful enough to overwhelm Earth's magnetic field and cause significant – even crippling – damage to a lot of our modern telecommunications and technological infrastructure.

This has been the kind of concern that was always bubbling in the background for engineers and scientists, but it never really became a pressing issue until recently. Once humanity began traveling into space, we found we had less and less of that magnetic shield protecting us.

And let's be clear, that magnetic field is enormous. You would have to travel tens of thousands of miles away from Earth to fully escape its protective bubble.

Still, just a couple hundred miles above the surface, the effects of the solar winds are more powerful than they are on the Earth's surface, so even putting satellites into orbit comes with all kinds of unforeseen risks.

As we begin to commercialize and populate LEO with satellites, spacecraft, and commercial space stations in the next two decades, the solar weather report is going to be far more important than it's been previously.

We're likely going to lose more equipment to space weather in the decades ahead, and we'll probably even end up seeing the loss of human life in orbit for the first time in our history.

The Sun is currently ramping up towards the most active phase of its 11-year cycle, which is expected to peak sometime in 2025. That is right around the time when many private companies like Axiom Space and SpaceX plan to deploy a lot of LEO infrastructure.

Going forward, it will be more important than ever to keep an eye on the Sun, or else we could end up with a far worse calamity than losing a few dozen Starlink satellites to the atmosphere.

Whether you've got a party planned, or you've got the TV all to yourself, it's undeniable that the Super Bowl is one of the biggest broadcasting events of the year.

If you want to watch Super Bowl 2022 in the best possible quality, however, we've got some bad news. NBC recently announced that this year's big game won't be broadcast in 4K UHD resolution (as originally reported by The Verge).

That's not exactly a rarity. Last year's Super Bowl LV was broadcast in standard HD by CBS after the network cited the organizational difficulties presented by the pandemic. In fact, Fox is the only network able to show the game in that glorious Ultra-HD resolution (and did so only for the first time back in 2020).

That's not to say your hard-won Super Bowl TV deals will be in vain. If you're using the big game to upgrade your entertainment setup you'll still benefit from enhanced colors, better motion handling, and greater contrasts with a premium set. However, those looking to watch the Super Bowl in high quality 4K may have to do a little more digging.

Why isn't NBC broadcasting the Super Bowl in 4K?

NBC isn't broadcasting the Super Bowl in 4K for the simple reason that it doesn't have the distribution platform to do so just yet.

However, many have found such an explanation a little thin. After all, the network has successfully shown the Olympics in 4K HDR... kind of.

NBC's coverage of the Tokyo Olympics was available in 4K HDR, but only through partner services like FuboTV, YouTube TV, and Xfinity. NBC's own apps and networks were still streaming in standard definition.

However, even streaming the Super Bowl on the likes of FuboTV or Sling TV won't yield 4K results this year.

Super Bowl key info

Super Bowl LVI will kick off on Sunday February 13 at 6.30pm ET / 3.30pm PT / 11.30pm GMT at SoFi Stadium, LA.

The Cincinnati Bengals will face off against home team the LA Rams in a bid to claim their first Lombardi in franchise history.

Neither NBC, CBS, nor ESPN have the infrastructure to broadcast football games in 4K, with Fox only being able to do so by upscaling its standard HD footage once it comes down to the wire. None of these channels broadcast regular season and post-season games in UHD either.

It takes a lot to put the whole Super Bowl package together, and even more to ensure that each halftime performer, slow motion replay, and commercial seamlessly flows in 4K HDR. It's easy to see why the technology has been put on the backburner considering the scramble to put on the big show, but now that 4K is firmly on the road to industry standard a full UHD season can't be too far away.

Can you still watch Super Bowl LVI in 4K?

That brand new TV might not go to waste though. There is a way to watch every play in a crystal clear picture, and that's through 4K upscaling.

If you own a 4K TV, it's worth checking to see if your set can take HD content and fine tune it to produce a clearer, more detailed UHD picture.

Some 4K TVs can do this better than others; Sony sets are particularly adept while cheaper TCL and Sharp sets will struggle a little more. However, the process taking place is largely the same from display to display.

Super Bowl on TV

Your TV can take a Full HD picture from a broadcast and inflate it for a larger 4K resolution, while reducing noise, sharpening details, and defining textures a little better.

The result is a crisper image overall, with greater attention to smaller details. It won't be the same as a native 4K stream, but it will still be better than viewing on a Full HD set.

Should you buy a 4K TV for the Super Bowl?

NBC's broadcast may throw a spanner in the works if a 4K Super Bowl stream was a driving factor behind your decision to upgrade your setup this month. You won't be able to use your new TV to its fullest potential for this year's game (even upscaling won't be quite as crisp as a full 4K stream), but picking up a new display will still help you get more out of this week's big game.

The latest 4K TVs go beyond a crisper picture, so you can enjoy enhanced colors and contrast as well as better audio on top. You'll still feel the benefits of your purchase this weekend.

Beyond the big game, though, there's more 4K content available than ever. Disney Plus, Amazon Prime, Netflix, and more all stream in 4K with hundreds of titles up for viewing. As the technology behind 4K displays grows cheaper, we'll see a far greater spread of UHD content up for grabs as well.

Microsoft could be set for a significant expansion of its cybersecurity activity as rumors swirl of a possible big-name acquisition coming soon.

The technology giant is reportedly considering a bid for Mandiant, a security firm that specializes in incident response and cyber threat intelligence, as well as malware and endpoint protection.

Mandiant was acquired by FireEye in 2014, but last year returned to being independent after the sale of the FireEye product business to McAfee Enterprise.

Microsoft and Mandiant

Shares in Mandiant surged almost 18% as reports of a takeover began to circulate, taking the company's market capitalization to around $4.3 billion. The company had just reported its Q4 2021 results, revealing record billings and revenue for threat intelligence and consulting.

There's been no official confirmation of any concrete takeover talks from Microsoft or Mandiant yet, but a deal would allow Microsoft to further bolster its cybersecurity ranks, particularly as the company's customer base continues to grow around the world.

In 2021 alone, Microsoft acquired a host of security firms, including RiskIQ, CloudKnox Security and ReFirm. The company also recently proved it had the money to invest in new acquisitions by announcing the $70 billion takeover of gaming giant Activision Blizzard.

The sheer scale of threats facing consumers and businesses today means that Microsoft has long been a backer of constantly improving and boosting its own security tools.

The company recently revealed a preview version of its own in-house security offering, Windows Defender, which should provide the next level of protection to users already on, or shifting to, Windows 11.

In addition to providing a basic security overview, Microsoft Defender Preview gives details of security alerts that have appeared on different devices. Perhaps the most valuable feature of the app is that it makes it possible to easily check the security of a device without the need, necessarily, to have physical access to it.

How to tell if cheap TVs are worth it

Cheap TVs can often wow with price tags but disappoint once they're at home and plugged in, however there are ways to find 4K TV deals that bring premium experiences down to lower price ranges. Sacrificing a few features you won't use to prioritise the ones you will is an easy way to get started, but finding that perfect mix might prove difficult.

On the other hand, even displays costing between £300 and £400 are often considered to be cheap TVs, so you'll want to make sure you're getting your money's worth with your new setup. That's where these TV deals come in handy - you can easily get features well above your price range included in your new cheap smart TV if you know when and where to deal hunt.

Nowadays, you'll want to be picking up a 4K TV if you're looking to spend within this price range. Straight HD and HD-ready TV deals are still kicking around some retailers and, for the price you're paying for the previous wave of technology, you could well be picking up a 4K display instead. As the price scale rises, you'll be picking up higher pixel density, better colour differentiation, deeper dynamic range, and better upscaling from pricier units. It's worth checking out the various display specifications to make sure your cheap TV matches up to what others are offering at that particular price point.

Or, you could let us do all of that for you with the 4K TV deals listed here.

Are 4K TV deals getting cheaper?

As the technology progresses, and even leaps into the world of 8K, 4K TV deals are getting cheaper and cheaper, meaning more households than ever are able to afford premium displays like the ones highlighted here. Not only does that show just how cheap these 4K TV deals have become in recent years, but it also means there's more content being made to be displayed on these 4K TVs available as well. So, not only are these sets getting cheaper, but there's also plenty more to watch on them as well.

How to find the best TV deals

We've found that the best TV deals usually come from a few retailers in particular - Very regularly discounts their cheaper models, Currys holds excellent prices on Philips Ambilight displays, and John Lewis can offer up invaluable peace of mind with their extensive warranty guarantees.

So, you know where to shop but if you're not seeing any particularly enticing offers -you might be searching at the wrong time. The best TV deals are usually between November and January, when Black Friday and holiday sales are discounting premium displays left and right. However, you'll also find the summer sales fruitful as well.

What to look for in smart TV deals

The vast majority of TV deals on offer right now will offer Smart TV functionality. It's now become the norm for your TV to offer at least a limited selection of streaming and on demand apps, but the quality of this experience will vary between models. Cheap smart TVs will typically send you home with preset apps like Netflix, YouTube, BBC iPlayer, All 4, and UK TV Play among other everyday streamers.

However, if you spend a little more you'll start finding Alexa compatibility, more niche app options like Disney Plus, CrunchyRoll, and NowTV, and a faster, slicker operating system. You'll find more options for connecting extra services on more premium smart TV deals.
