Scientists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have created a new material using a new polymerizing process. The material, called 2DPA-1, a type of polyaramide, is said to be as light as plastic and as strong as steel; even better, it can be manufactured at industrial scale which bodes well for its go-to-market timeframe.

The material, which is the first polymer to be polymerized in 2D, adopts a planar structure, as opposed to a string one; think spaghetti lines and lasagne sheets. The team, led by Michael Strano, the Carbon P. Dubbs Professor of Chemical Engineering at MIT, managed to crack a problem that has left many generations of Ppolymer scientists befuddled.

2DPA-1 can sustain deformative forces up to six times greater than bulletproof glass and has a yield strength (the force required to break the material) 12 times that of steel at equal density. Another intriguing property is that it is impermeable to gases which could mean waterproof ultrathin coatings.

What does that mean for consumers and businesses?

It is still early days but 2DPA-1 could mark the beginning of something very special. Rolling the process out (patents have already been filed) could take a few years but its impact on everyday life won’t take too long given that the new polymerization process uses existing technology.

From ultrathin, totally waterproof coatings to super light chassis for laptops and smartphones (in lieu of say magnesium or aluminum alloys), there’s plenty of scope in a variety of industries. It could replace paint to protect metal in certain cases, replace metal in bridges and structures that require high tensile strength and malleability.

It could even become an integral part of data centers as it could help produce waterproof servers that do not need active cooling systems or be used to produce safer vehicles. The next step in the research is to understand how the polymer turns into 2D sheets in the first place and whether other types of materials can be produced (e.g. 3D version).

Other questions remain: how safe is it when burnt? At what temperature does it ignite? Is it food-safe? How does it degrade?

Amazon Prime membership is going up almost 17%. That's sudden sticker shock for 200 million people around the world, the kind that makes you take a pause and wonder, "Why am I paying for this?"

Before you dump Amazon Prime, though, listen to me: it's probably still worth it.

I can't lie, my initial reaction was, "What?! Amazon is raising the yearly subscription rate for Amazon Prime by $20? That's insane. Who does that?"

Amazon does that.

It took a beat for me to calm down and realize that amortized across 12 months, it's just $1.60 more a month. Then I remembered how Netflix just raised its monthly rates by roughly $2 a month at its top tier.

Inflation, it seems, is not just for our bread, milk, and gas, it's hitting the tech and media-consumption sector, too.

Now that I've stopped banging my head on the table in frustration, I can step back and think about what Amazon currently offers for $139 a year (or $11.50 a month).

Why Amazon Prime, anyway?

I think back to the days when Amazon was just an upstart online bookseller, staring down Waldens and Barnes and Nobile edifices across the country. We thought it remarkable, how one virtual store could house so many books and quickly ship them almost anywhere in the world.

It all seems so quaint now.

Today, Amazon sells almost anything you can think of and most of it can arrive at your home in 48 hours or less. But the benefit of Amazon Prime is that, for millions of items, it ensures two-day free delivery (along with constant email updates about when your product shipped and when someone dropped it on your doorstep).

With our shut-in, pandemic-reliance on having all things delivered, it was hard to put a price on this. When we wouldn't venture outside for a package of toilet paper, we could often find thousands of squares to spare on Amazon.

Beyond anecdotal evidence, we know that Amazon founder and former CEO Jeff Bezos made $75 billion at the height of the pandemic in 2020. That realization can, for many, create some unwanted tension between the convenience of Amazon Prime and the realization that you're making the worlds' richest man even richer.

If you can put that aside, though, there is even more value in Prime beyond a vast online store and almost instant delivery.

Hidden value

15 years ago, when Amazon Prime video launched as Amazon Unbox, no one knew it would become a TV and movie studio in its own right. That it would produce binge-worthy hits like The Boys and Marvelous Mrs. Maisel or Oscar-worthy films like The Sound of Metal.

I admit to watching all of these shows, along with classic content and movies on the platform. It's probably not as deep as Netflix or as IP-rich as Disney+, but it has its charms and is part of the Amazon prime whole. Also, there is the Lord of the Rings thing.

Similarly, I take advantage of the free monthly books, music (I could get more current music with Amazon Music Unlimited, but I refuse to pay for yet one more music streaming service), and ready answers of all kinds of facts and trivia from Amazon Alexa (as well as control over a lot of my smart devices).

I do not shop Whole Foods, but admit I have considered switching to the huge and somewhat granola-ey grocer for the member-only deals. Amazon Prime will even store all of my full-resolution photos (you do need an app).

There are clothes through Wardrobe that let you try before you buy, the new Pharmacy prescription service (I have some to fill and am anxious to try), and, of course, the shopping extravaganza known as Amazon Prime Day - that inescapable e-commerce Festivus that threatens to blot out the online shopping sun. However, it only does so if you are a member. If you don't pay for Amazon Prime, you don't gain access to those deals, especially the wild flash sales that offer some truly impressive discounts.

Yes, I speak from experience and, no, I'm not ashamed of it.

Why the hike?

Amazon will spend at least $11 billion on Prime Video in 2022. But that's just a small part of the Amazon expenses pie. As Amazon noted in its earnings release (where it semi-buried the news about the membership increase), it faces rising costs in Wages (more and more of the Amazon workforce is looking at unionization to secure better wages and working conditions), and shipping costs. On the latter, people around the world have pushed Amazon's shipping infrastructure to the brink, but somehow it hasn't fundamentally broken.

There's no denying that this is a big hike, but few online services offer as many features for the monthly price. Netflix isn't offering to ship you anything in two days. Disney+ doesn't throw in a discount to Disney World. Amazon is, for now, the only online smorgasbord of services deal in town. And it's still worth it.

The Olympics has been hailed as one of the greatest sporting events on Earth, so it’s only fitting that they are presented on a screen that matches the Games’ reputation.

To that end, the world’s largest LED screen was unveiled at the Winter Olympics' opening ceremony in Beijing today that’s 10,552 square meters big and uses 40,000 LED modules according to the Global Times.

The screen in question was used as the main stage of the opening ceremony and was built by the China Academy of Launch Vehicle (CALT), which is China's largest developer and producer of carrier rockets (we don't get the connection, either). According to the firm, the screen offers “a visual feast even better than 8K resolution” and claims that it’s the largest LED screen of its kind ever made.

At that size, it’s never going to fit inside our homes - unless, of course, you plan on living inside Beijing’s National Stadium  (a.k.a. "the Bird's Nest") where the opening ceremony was held. For now, we’ll just have to settle for the 1.5-meter screen sitting in our living room.

How was it built?

So the world's largest LED display comes with a bit of an asterisk because, obviously, this isn't just one LED screen, but rather many screens all interconnected.

The reason LED displays are chosen over OLED is because of their reliability and reduced cost - OLED simply is more expensive to manufacture at scale and isn't as reliable in these massive configurations. LED screens are also brighter than OLED, which is important when you're lighting up an entire arena.

How bright are we talking? Well, commercial LED displays like the ones that are being used in the Olympic Opening Ceremony are between 4,000 and 10,000 nits. Considering that even the brightest consumer QLED TVs only reach between 2,000 and 3,000 nits, these commercial displays are significantly brighter than what we see on our home TVs.

That being said, each 'tile' in this display is likely only one-to-two feet across, which means there are tens of thousands being used to complete the display - a real feat of engineering deserving of its own gold medal.

Samsung The Wall MicroLED 2021 TV

Analysis: What’s the biggest TV you can buy?

OK, so ruling out the National Stadium’s new LED screen, what other options does a well-off, tech-hungry cinephile have? Quite a few, to be honest.

Of course, the one option that’s the most distinct is the new Samsung MicroLED TVs that made their debut at CES 2022 in 89, 101, and 114-inch sizes. These big-screen displays should be able to fill a wall of your living room for the low, low price of $80,000 (around £59,500 or AU$113,500).

Beneath Samsung's MicroLED TVs are the extra-large OLED TVs from LG that were available in 2021 in 83-inch sizes and will soon reach 97 inches across, and oversized LED-LCD TVs like TCL's XL collection that span up to 85 inches.

While most of us would love a TV of that size, their price tags are likely still a bit too steep for that vast majority of us. Fortunately, we've seen several 75-inch TVs drop under two grand in the last two years, with some even dropping under one grand for shopping events like Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Amazon Prime Day.

Long story short? Beijing's 10,000 meter display might be out of reach for us, but chances are good that a new 75-inch TV isn't.

When is Presidents' Day 2022?

Presidents' Day is a US federal holiday that takes place on the third Monday of February to celebrate all US presidents. George Washington's birthday was celebrated on February 22, which is where the holiday originated from, starting in 1879. This year, Presidents' Day falls on Monday, February 21, with the holiday weekend kicking off on Friday, February 18.

When do Presidents' Day sales start?

We typically start to see Presidents' Day sales popping up in early February, with mattress and appliance deals from Home Depot and Lowe's leading the pack. You'll find tech sites like Dell and HP launching their sales the week before Presidents' Day, and big retailers like Best Buy and Walmart will typically hold off and kick off their promotions during the holiday weekend.

We'll be updating this guide with all the best early offers, so make sure to bookmark this page for all the latest updates.
