The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has revealed its plan to change the rules regarding how businesses report both data breaches and data leaks to their customers and the federal government.

FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel has put forth a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) that would begin the process of changing the government agency's rules for notification customers and federal law enforcement about data breaches.

Rosenworcel explained in a press release that the increased frequency  of breaches and leaks is why she shared her new NPRM with colleagues at the FCC, saying:

“Current law already requires telecommunications carriers to protect the privacy and security of sensitive customer information. But these rules need updating to fully reflect the evolving nature of data breaches and the real-time threat they pose to affected consumers. Customers deserve to be protected against the increase in frequency, sophistication, and scale of these data leaks, and the consequences that can last years after an exposure of personal information. I look forward to having my colleagues join me in taking a fresh look at our data breach reporting rules to better protect consumers, increase security, and reduce the impact of future breaches.”

Updated breach notification requirements

Rosenworcel's proposal outlines several updates to the FCC's current rules in regard to how businesses notify customers and government agencies about breaches.

The first of which and likely the most important is that the current seven business day mandatory waiting period for notifying customers of a breach would be eliminated. If the proposal is accepted, this would mean that consumers would have more time to change their passwords and even invest in identity theft protection services before those responsible for a breach could use their data against them.

At the same time, the proposal would expand customer protections by requiring businesses to notify consumers of inadvertent breaches or data leaks. This could put additional pressure on companies to properly secure their data as their business could be affected by the news that they left a database unsecured online. Finally, Rosenworcel's proposal would require mobile carriers to notify the FCC of all reportable breaches in addition to both the FBI and US Secret Service.

The FCC's next open meeting is scheduled for later this month and we'll have to wait until then to see if the government agency approves the new data breach and data leak rules proposed by Rosenworcel.

Since the MacBook Pro 13 and the MacBook Air launched with the Apple M1 in November 2020, the entire computing world shifted its gaze to Apple, and it looks like it's paid off for the Cupertino behemoth. 

A new report from Canalys shows that around the world Apple computer shipments grew by 28%, shipping nearly 29 million Macs last year. Other PC manufacturers moved more units, like Lenovo, which shipped over 82 million PCs, but in terms of growth, Apple takes the lead. 

It's hard to look at this and not attribute it at least slightly to the rise of the Apple M1. While there are plenty of Macs in Apple's arsenal that don't use it (yet), the fact is that its three most popular devices were upgraded with its own chip and have been critically lauded - including our own stellar reviews. 

And looking forward, now that the M1 Max and M1 Pro were shoved into the 16-inch and 14-inch MacBook Pro, it's likely that Apple's growth in the computing world is only going to continue from here. For the first time in years, Macs are growing in a big way, with the MacBook Air especially being an incredibly powerful device that isn't much more expensive than its Windows counterparts.

Analysis: will it last?

From the way Apple talks about its M1 family of processors, it'd be easy to assume that the company is generations ahead of what other chip manufacturers are able to do. But from what we saw at CES 2022, it's unlikely that Apple's going to stay ahead of either AMD or Intel into the new year. 

From what we've seen from Alder Lake and the Intel Core i9-12900K (we'll have a review, I'm working on it I promise), Intel has improved on both performance and power efficiency by leaps and bounds since the 11th-generation chips we're used to. While we've yet to see what 12th-gen Alder Lake processors can do in the best laptops, Intel made some pretty bold claims at its CES keynote. 

And Team Blue isn't alone there. Nvidia also hit hard at the M1 Max, claiming that RTX 3080 Ti laptops will simply wipe the floor with Apple's 16-inch MacBook Pro in the rendering and video tasks that are that laptop's key workloads. 

For how impressive the MacBook Pro 16-inch was in our review, given it was equipped with just the M1 Pro rather than the Max, it ended up trading blows with the Asus ROG Strix G15 that I reviewed almost 6 months before the new MacBook Pro was even announced - and that's before you start taking GPU performance into consideration. 

It's easy to take Apple's claims that its chip is miles above any mobile chip offered by Intel, AMD or Nvidia at face value, but it's important to take into consideration that PCs are never just one chip. And with the optimizations that are being made in this generation of mobile hardware - like Nvidia's new 4th-generation Max-Q tech and Intel's upcoming Deep Link technology - the discrete GPU solutions that Windows laptops are known for are going to continue to be more effective for heavy workloads. 

The only place I see Macs continuing to show up Windows PCs is in battery life, especially in the workstation class of laptops. But while that's an important spec to have on paper, when you're sitting down at your desk to get some rendering or editing work done, you're probably going to be plugged into an outlet anyways. 

Either way, the gargantuan growth Macs have seen in the last year just show that the CPU battle is heating up in huge ways, and unlike the past where that battle was in hulking desktops and gaming PCs, we're starting to see it happen in the best laptops instead. 

2022 is going to be an exciting year.

New episodes of Euphoria season 2 are airing weekly on HBO on Sundays at 9pm ET/PT for its eight-episode run.

Halo Infinite’s crossplay functionality, which allows Xbox Series X/S users to play with and against PC gamers, is causing ire in the game’s community.

Xbox players are increasingly frustrated with having to face mouse-and-keyboard opponents, as well as the many cheats that are more prevalent among PC players of the game. 

As reported by The Verge, fans have been airing their complaints since the game’s multiplayer launched last November, highlighting the cheating of some PC gamers (such as those using aimbots and wallhacks), as well as the advantages that a mouse and keyboard setup has over a controller.

The complaints have continued over the past few months, as players have called on developer 343 industries to make crossplay an optional feature, rather than a permanent, default setting. You don’t have to look far across the Halo Infinite subreddit to find recent frustrations from Xbox players struggling against their PC counterparts.

Although crossplay can be disabled in Halo Infinite’s ranked modes when playing solo, with players given the option to lock matchmaking to controller or keyboard players only, it’s not possible to disable crossplay in the game’s main playlists.

Analysis: a fair request

Crossplay is a tricky feature. Often praised for widening a game’s player base and allowing friends to play together regardless of what consoles they own, its functionality is complicated in the case of a competitive multiplayer shooter like Halo Infinite.

Whether you’re playing ranked or casual, no one wants to face an opponent with an unfair advantage, and it’s difficult to see how PC gamers have anything but that. Even without the cheats that the more unscrupulous players might use, the pinpoint accuracy and motor control of a mouse easily exceed that of a controller’s analog stick.

As many fans have pointed out, the most obvious, and possibly straightforward, solution would be to allow players to opt-out of crossplay should they want to. That’ll allow Xbox and PC buddies to play together when it suits them, while letting other players keep to their own lane.

Although developer 343 Industries hasn’t officially responded to players’ crossplay concerns, it has emphasized that it will be continuing to tweak and update Halo Infinite with quality of life improvements. During its announcement that Big Team Battle matchmaking will be getting a hotfix sometime soon, it said additional anti-cheat updates are in the works, too, with the next major update scheduled to release in mid-February.

If there's one thing I regret about not visiting CES 2022 in person, it's missing out on an opportunity to take a ride through Elon Musk's Boring Tunnel in Las Vegas.

In, hindsight, though, I count myself lucky.

Instead of a wormhole that transported convention-goers from one end of the conference center to the other in a flash, the Boring Company's 1.7-mile loop experienced a traffic jam -- and seemed less like a next-gen people mover than a concrete example of hubris.

Elon Musk is one of the most successful entrepreneurs in history, launching a successful electric car company, Tesla, a private space company, SpaceX, that's on the cusp of taking us back to the Moon and beyond, and more. But does everything he touch turn to gold? Not quite.

The big dig

Musk's obsession with travel on the ground, more specifically traffic, has not borne the same kind of fruit as his space dreams and cars. The ideas he's cooked up while, I'm guessing, waiting in Los Angeles's soul-crushing traffic, have resulted in third-party companies trying -- to this date with little success -- to build sub-hypersonic, tube-based transportation systems, and Musk's five-year-old Boring company digging tunnels in California and Las Vegas.

When Boring completed its inaugural tunnel near SpaceX's headquarters in Hawthorne, CA, in 2018, Musk boasted that the type of 3D tunnel-builder Boring used could ultimately build enough tunnels "to transport everyone in the U.S. in L.A." He did acknowledge, though, that not everyone would want to move to LA.

Still, Musk's point was made. Traffic congestion would be non-existent if only he could build enough of these tunnels underneath L.A and in other traffic-congested locations across the U.S..

Boring completed work on the Las Vega Loop, which modestly runs from the Las Vegas Convention Center's North Hall to the Encore Hotel and through to the LVCC South Hall, last summer. The long-term goal is an entire network of Boring tunnels to ferry Vegas visitors to and from various casinos, the Sands Convention Center, and, naturally, McCarren Airport.

That's the future. The present is arguably less impressive.

New tube, old problems

In its current configuration, people enter one of the Loop entrances via escalators where they are greeted by a phalanx of Teslas and drivers who shepherd passengers - as many as can fit in a mid-sized Tesla sedan - through the smooth, well-lit tube. Keep in mind, there's no track; the drivers are really only there to monitor the autonomous Teslas through the simple route.

In a video shared on YouTube from the week of CES 2022, a Loop passenger jokes, "Is it boring driving down here with all of this..." but stops short of a punchline as they roll into a Boring traffic jam.

The driver, missing the joke and not reacting to the jam (perhaps he's seen it before), responds without irony, "Oh, you know, when it's busy with new people, it's not too bad, but when it's slow, and by yourself, it kind of gets a little boring."

"So, is there often a lot of traffic here?" asks the passenger.

The Tesla driver goes on to explain that it's not typical but the backup might've been the result of the South Hall doors being closed.

For me, why the traffic jam existed is less important than the fact that it did.

The origin of traffic

I have a friend who says there's no such thing as "Traffic." It's created, he insists, because one person, for no good reason, taps on their brakes, and then the person behind them does it, and so on until traffic is formed. If the first driver didn't brake, it'd be smooth sailing for all.

The point I take from this theory is that it doesn't take much to create traffic or a traffic jam. The hope is a system such as these Boring Tunnels would break the cycle by shielding itself from external forces, like cross-traffic, merged lanes, or one person hitting their brakes.

Except, that's not the case. Because someone braked at the mouth of the Boring tunnel (near that South Hall and maybe because some exit was closed), so did the Teslas behind it until they had a mini traffic jam underneath the ceaselessly ringing bells of Las Vegas's slot machines.

Part of the blame falls on Tesla building only part of the people-mover solution. In order for Boring tunnels to reach their full potential, they need multiple tunnels per route, and it can't be a line of Teslas filling the tube. It's supposed to be bus-like electric vehicles that can move at least thrice as many people at once. Without throughput space and those mass-movers, Boring's tunnels are just smooth tubes that hide highway traffic problems underground. And less visible traffic is still traffic, right? 

CES 2022 offered a vision of the future, which if it's anything like Elon's tunnels, might be more boring than we anticipated.
