The best TV deals are usually between November and January, when Black Friday and holiday sales are discounting premium displays left and right. What to look for in smart TV deals

The vast majority of TV deals on offer right now will offer Smart TV functionality. It's now become the norm for your TV to offer at least a limited selection of streaming and on demand apps, but the quality of this experience will vary between models. Cheap smart TVs will typically send you home with preset apps like Netflix, YouTube, BBC iPlayer, All 4, and UK TV Play among other everyday streamers.

The US Supreme Court has dismissed a challenge put forth by Oracle over the way in which the Pentagon awarded the government's now-canceled Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure (JEDI) contract.

The Supreme Court's justices declined to hear the database software company's appeal of a lower court ruling that found Oracle was not financially harmed by any errors made by the Pentagon due to the fact that the company would not have qualified for it in the first place.

According to a ruling from the US Court of Federal Claims, Oracle was unable to fulfill the JEDI contract's requirement of “having at least three commercial cloud-hosting data centers within the US, separated by at least 150 miles, along with various other security standards”.

While the US Defense Department awarded the JEDI contract to Microsoft in 2019, the deal was scrapped in July of this year and a new contract called the Joint Warfighter Cloud Capability (JWCC) that includes both Amazon and Microsoft was put in place instead.

Appealing a canceled contract

Despite the fact that the JEDI contract no longer existed, Oracle still wanted the Supreme Court to hear its appeal as it said the flaws in the original contract could resurface during the biding process for the new contract.

Oracle first sued the US government in regard to JEDI back in 2018 claiming that it was unfair for the Defense Department to award the contract to a single company. It also took issue with the conflicts of interest in the procurement process as at that time, AWS was trying to recruit a government employee to help with the negotiations.

Oracle provided further insight into the reasons behind its appeal in its complaint, saying:

"Cases do not become moot simply because a defendant issues a press release claiming to have ceased its misconduct. The government asserts that the Department of Defense mooted this case by cancelling JEDI, the procurement contract that Oracle has challenged...Far from making it 'absolutely clear' that the challenged misconduct will not recur, the Department essentially admits the challenged misconduct will continue – and will continue to prejudice Oracle.”

While Oracle's protests over the JEDI contract have now been thrown out by the US Supreme Court, the company's argument that the Department of Defense mooted its case by canceling the original contract is still sound even though it failed to meet the contract's original requirements.

Windows 11 is officially supposed to be available for download on October 5, but it seems like the new operating system is available earlier than expected. 

The download page for Windows 11 is live now, which means you can download the operating system, either using a local installation wizard or by creating install media, like an .iso file or by using a thumb drive. This means you can likely bypass the high standards of the operating system and install it now and won't have to wait for Windows Update to yell at you. 

If you don't want to go through that process, you can check if it's available for you through Windows Update, but there's a pretty good chance it won't be at first, as Microsoft tends to release new operating systems in waves. We know our PC doesn't have it in Windows Update yet, but we're totally downloading it right now anyways.

Analysis: should you download Windows 11 early?

Windows 11 is a free upgrade for anyone that's using Windows 10, which means there's no barrier to entry for the new operating system beyond Microsoft's own system requirements – and even those seem to be more guidelines than rules. 

But with the operating system releasing officially tomorrow, this is about as early adopter as you can get, and you have to ask yourself whether it's really worth upgrading this early. While in our brief time with it, it's been relatively smooth, it's still the early days of an entirely new operating system and there are some bugs that could pop up. 

Our advice would be to avoid it on your main machine until the operating system has had at least a couple of updates, just to see if anything goes catastrophically wrong with Microsoft's latest operating system. 

If you are lucky enough to have multiple computers that are eligible for the new operating system, absolutely go for the upgrade, but do it on a machine that won't inconvenience you too terribly if something breaks.

Google has revealed that its search engine will no longer support Internet Explorer 11 making Google Search the latest product to pull support for Microsoft's legacy browser.

First released back in 2013 alongside Windows 8.1, Internet Explorer 11 was also ported back to Windows 7 as many Windows users didn't feel the need to upgrade their operating system at that time. Just three years later though, Internet Explorer was replaced by Microsoft Edge with the launch of Windows 10 in 2015.

However, since Edge wasn't available on older versions of Windows, Internet Explorer 11 remained the default browser on Windows 7, 8 and 8.1. As a result, the browser was able to hold on to its market share despite the fact that Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and other third-party browsers offered an improved browsing experience.

After ending support for Docs, Sheets, Slides and other Google Workspace apps back in March of this year, Google is finally ending support for Google Search in Internet Explorer 11.

Fallback experience

Google software engineer Malte Ubl shared the news that Google Search will no longer officially support Internet Explorer 11 in a recent tweet.

Apparently the Google Search team “did the math” and found that maintaining support for Microsoft's legacy browser was no longer worth it. Also according to UbI's tweet, “it is time” to leave Internet Explorer 11 behind and make the transition to Edge or another modern browser.

If for some reason you're still using Internet Explorer 11, you'll still be able to use Google Search through a “fallback experience” created by the search giant. While searching the web will still work on Microsoft's legacy browser, the experience won't be as fully featured as it is on other browsers.

With the launch of Windows 11 just a day away, now is the perfect time to leave Internet Explorer 11 behind for good and check out all of the new features in Microsoft Edge if you want to remain in the software giant's ecosystem.
