Nvidia has fired up a new supercomputer said to be the fastest in the world for AI workloads at the National Energy Research Scientific Computer Center (NERSC) in California.

The supercomputer is named after astrophysicist Saul Perlmutter and will initially be tasked with building the most ambitious 3D map of the universe ever seen, utilizing the 6,000+ Nvidia A100 Tensor Core GPUs on board.

In its current state, Perlmutter is capable of delivering almost four exaFLOPS of AI performance, which Nvidia says makes it “the fastest system on the planet on 16- and 32-bit mixed-precision math AI uses”. Its performance will be bolstered further as part of “phase two”, with the introduction of a second tranche of CPU cores.

Once the system is complete, it is expected to fall within the top five supercomputers in the Top 500 rankings, which assesses overall performance using the High Performance Linpack (HPL) benchmark.

Nvidia supercomputer

According to Nvidia, more than 7,000 researchers will put the Perlmutter system to work and tens of applications have already been readied with the goal of advancing astrophysics and climate science.

“In one project, the supercomputer will help assemble the largest 3D map of the visible universe to date. It will process data from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI), a kind of cosmic camera that can capture as many as 5,000 galaxies in a single exposure,” explains a blog post from Dion Harris, Nvidia HPC & AI Product Marketing Lead.

“Researchers need the speed of Perlmutter’s GPUs to capture dozens of exposures from one night to know where to point DESI the next night. Preparing a year’s worth of data for publication would take weeks or months on prior systems, but Perlmutter should help them accomplish the task in as little as a few days.”

The hope is that the universe map, once complete, will help researchers learn more about dark energy, the force behind the ever-accelerating expansion of the universe. The discovery of dark energy in 2011 earned Saul Permutter the Nobel Prize.

Other projects set to run on the Perlmutter machine have similarly ambitious goals. A number of them will make use of the unique qualities of the Tensor Cores in the A100 to simulate interactions between atoms, which has previously been next to impossible.

This work could prove revelatory in the field of materials science, by potentially uncovering ways to develop more efficient batteries, biofuels and the like.

It’s a well known fact in phones that only budget buyers want colorful handsets. This of course isn’t true, but you’d be forgiven for thinking it was based on the state of the smartphone scene, a state that I can’t help thinking about – and puzzling over – now that there’s talk of a pink iPhone 13 Pro Max.

A Twitter account (and phone shop) called Peng Store tweeted that a rose pink iPhone 13 Pro Max will land in December. It’s a claim that’s deeply suspect – not least because the attached render is a fan-made one from Instagrammer Ali Sayed Ali, and it predates this leak.

December also seems late for an iPhone 13 model to launch, but perhaps the biggest reason I’m skeptical of this is simply that Apple doesn’t typically use bright colors for its premium phones. The iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max for example are available in black, silver, gold and pacific blue shades – with those latter two being understated.

Yet Apple isn’t afraid of using bright or unusual colors on its other phones. Beyond the boring colors, the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini are available in bright purple and red shades, along with a snazzy green. The iPhone SE (2020) too can be purchased in a bright red.

So while I’m not sold on this rumor, I also wouldn’t be totally surprised if the iPhone 13 came in pink – but I would be surprised if the iPhone 13 Pro or Pro Max did.

And this isn’t exclusively an Apple issue. Want a Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra? Your color choices are black or silver (or a small selection of similarly smart additional shades if you buy it direct from Samsung). Yet the standard Samsung Galaxy S21 comes in pink and violet options, and if you move further down into, say, the Samsung Galaxy A range, you have a similarly vibrant selection of colors for many models.

The same can be seen to a lesser extent with OnePlus – while for the most part the brand focuses on subtle shades, the mid-range OnePlus Nord can alternatively be had in a bright ‘Blue Marble’. And it’s a similar story with other brands – not all of them all the time, but enough for there to be a definite pattern.

Bring on the brightness

What I don’t understand though, is why. Having lots of money doesn’t make someone less interested in garish gadgets – you only have to look at how Donald Trump decorates for evidence of that.

Appreciating or desiring high-end tech doesn’t make you allergic to color either – I definitely fall into that category, and a couple of phones back I had an Honor 10 in large part because of the flashy blue color scheme I could get it with.

So I’m stumped as to why this isn’t more often an option at the high end. Sure, not everyone will want a phone that shines like the sun, but options are always appreciated, especially when you’re paying that much money.

So I – like apparently many, many other people – hope Apple does make a pink iPhone 13, but what I really hope is that the color is available across the whole range.

Microsoft is set to launch a new feature that could prove a lifesaver for anyone required to to review recordings of Teams meetings.

A new entry in the company’s product roadmap suggests the collaboration service will benefit from a variable playback option coming soon to Microsoft Stream, the native Microsoft 365 video service.

“For Teams meeting recordings saved to OneDrive and SharePoint, you’ll now be able to change the playback speed (0.5x-2x) while watching the video,” Microsoft explained.

Unfortunately, the variable playback feature is still under development and not due to roll out in a full public build until September.

Microsoft Teams recordings

Recently, Microsoft announced it will soon implement a change that means all Teams meetings are recorded automatically, without the need for the organizer or an IT admin to opt in.

The idea is to avoid situations whereby participants or absentees miss out on crucial information, as well as to provide a pool of resources that can be consulted after the fact, including full text transcripts and any attachments shared during meetings.

With all meeting recordings archived by default, the new variable playback speed option will help Teams users make the most out of these resources.

It works both ways, allowing users to slow down recordings at pivotal moments to ensure no key details are missed, and to speed through less important sections of the conversation. Overall, this should mean activities such as minute taking and catching up on missed sessions absorb fewer hours of the day.

The feature also expands on Microsoft’s existing efforts where accessibility is concerned, giving people who are hard of hearing a better chance of following the thread of conversation and those who suffer from conditions such as dyspraxia a chance to take down fuller notes.
