Security researchers from CyberNews have discovered more than 29,000 unsecured databases worldwide that are exposing over 19 petabytes (19,000 TB) of data online.

To conduct its latest investigation, the news outlet used a specialized search engine capable of scanning for open Hadoop, MongoDB and Elasticsearch databases. It's worth noting though that CyberNews didn't count any databases with default credentials enabled, so the number of unprotected databases online is actually significantly higher.

Of the databases discovered in CyberNews' search, Hadoop instances exposed the most data with almost 19PB easily accessible to cybercriminals or anyone for that matter followed by Elasticsearch with 143.8TB and MongoDB with just 6.5TB. However, when it comes to the number of exposed databases, Elasticsearch took the top spot with 19,814 instances without any kind of authentication in place.

In terms of which countries have the most exposed databases, China tops the list with 12,943 instances overall while the US comes in second with 4,512 instances followed by Germany with just 1,479 unprotected instances.

Exposed databases

Last year an unknown group of cybercriminals launched a series of attacks on unsecured databases without any explanation or even a ransom demand. These so-called 'meow attacks' wiped all of the data stored on these servers and left database owners with just an empty folder filled with files named 'meow'.

Surprisingly during its recent investigation, CyberNews found 59 databases that were still not protected even after they were hit by meow attacks last year. Security researcher at the news outlet Mantas Sasnauskas provided further insight on the importance of properly securing online databases in a new report, saying:

“Anyone can look for these unprotected clusters by using IoT search engines to effortlessly identify those that don’t have authentication enabled and exploit them by stealing the data, holding them ransom, or, as was the case with the ‘Meow’ attack, simply destroy valuable information for fun, wiping billions of records and crippling both business and personal projects in the process.”

Database owners can prevent their data from being stolen by enabling authentication, enabling encryption or using a VPN and by keeping their database software up to date. Once authentication is enabled, they should also protect their database with a complex and unique password which can be done by either using a password generator or a password manager.

The Realme Nazro 30 series made its debut in India back in February with Narzo 30A and Narzo 30 Pro devices. The company did not launch the vanilla Narzo 30 at the event, but it did confirm the Realme Narzo 30 will be launching soon in two variants - 4G and 5G. Realme has now officially set the launch date of the Realme Narzo 30.

The Realme Narzo 30 will be launched on May 18 in Malaysia. Ahead of the launch, Marc Yeo Tech Review channel has posted the unboxing of the phone which gives us a clear idea about what the phone looks like and also gives us complete information of the specs. Here are the specs of the upcoming Realme Narzo 30 based on the YouTube video.

Realme Narzo 30 specs (expected)

Optus has updated its range of mobile plans, and while each plan now comes with more data, you’ll be paying a little more for the pleasure.

Each plan has increased by AU$6 a month for new customers, but the trade-off is you’ll have a larger amount of data to use – and in most cases, your monthly data cap has doubled.

For a rundown of exactly what’s changed at Optus, refer to the table below:

Optus mobile plans
Plan Previous data + price Current data + price
Optus Small plan 10GB for AU$39p/m 20GB for AU$45p/m
Optus Medium plan 60GB for AU$49p/m 80GB for AU$55p/m
Optus Large plan 100GB for AU$59p/m 200GB for AU$65p/m
Optus Extra Large plan 120GB for AU$79p/m 240GB for AU$85p/m
Optus One plan 500GB for AU$119p/m N/A

As you’ll see in the table, new customers now need to pay a minimum of AU$45 a month to get on the Optus network, rather than the previous AU$39 a month plan. The telco has also ditched its Optus One plan altogether, which gave customers a massive 500GB a month.

It’s also doubled the data available on the Small, Large and Extra Large mobile plans. Prior to this plan refresh, Optus only offered a double data deal to customers buying a 5G handset.

Other changes now see Optus Sport included as standard on all mobile plans, a perk previously not available to customers on Optus’ cheapest deal. Each plan also comes with 5G network access and unlimited talk and text to standard numbers in Australia.

There’s bad news for fans of the telco’s included international data roaming allowance though, as it has been removed. You’ll now need to pay a minimum of AU$10 a day for 1GB of data when using your SIM overseas.

If you’re already an Optus customer, the updated pricing plans don’t apply to you – only new Optus customers.

How does Optus compare to the competition?

Among the three major telcos, Optus is facing stiff competition against Vodafone, particularly in terms of price. Optus’ price increases means its cheapest plan gets you 20GB of data for AU$45 a month, and by comparison, you can get 100GB to burn through for AU$45 with Vodafone.

When it comes to some of the smaller budget telcos, you’ll also pay less for more data. For recommendations, refer to our best SIM-only plans page.

Where Optus has them beat though, is its well-established network, and its growing 5G coverage. The telco recently laid claim to the fastest 5G speeds in Australia, with independent testing finding its average 5G download speed was 22% faster than Telstra’s in Sydney and Melbourne during the test period.

If you’d like to see availability in your area, check the Optus 5G network map.
