In a letter marking the 32nd anniversary of the World Wide Web, Sir Tim Berners-Lee is warning of a growing digital divide online that threatens the future success of many young people.

For those unfamiliar, Sir Tim Berners-Lee is credited with inventing the internet navigation system known as the World Wide Web back in 1989.

Now though, he believes that his invention isn't living up to its potential and that the dominance of online giants is just a “fad” that won't last. In an interview with Reuters, Sir Tim Berners-Lee expanded on this idea, saying:

“I’m optimistic, because we’ve seen some dominant fads on the internet before ... and then things change. The only sane thing to think is that ... things are going to accelerate (and) continue to accelerate. We’re going through another step-change in the speed at which the world is changing.”

Internet as a basic right

While our lives have become increasingly digital and this has only been accelerated by the pandemic, a third of young people have no internet access at all with many more lacking the data, devices and reliable connection they need to harness the full power of the web.

According to UNICEF, only the top third of young people under 25 years old have a home internet connection which leaves 2.2bn others without the stable access they need to learn online. To combat this, Sir Tim Berners-Lee believes that governments around the world must recognize internet access as a basic right. In his open letter, he explained exactly what this would take, saying:

“The Alliance for Affordable Internet (A4AI), an initiative of the Web Foundation, has calculated that $428 billion of additional investment over ten years would provide everyone a quality broadband connection. To put this in perspective, that amounts to the equivalent of just $116 per person for the 3.7 billion people who remain offline today. By giving billions more people tools to learn, earn, and create, this down payment for future generations would deliver incredible returns in the form of economic growth and social empowerment.”

In addition to calling for internet access to be recognized as a basic right like electricity was seen last century, Sir Tim Berners-Lee is also working on a project called Solid which will allow users to control their own personal data as opposed to leaving it in the hands of Facebook and other tech giants.

Friday update: Our Xbox Series X restock tracker is going to help you find the new Microsoft console when it's back in stock. We've helped thousands of people get the next-gen consoles in the last few days. Here's how you can find Xbox restock.

It'll look like:

  • 2. Check for Xbox restock yourself – these are the 12 trusted stores

Trusted Xbox Series X stores

Avoid buying this console through Twitter and online sources that you don't trust. Here's a list of 12 retailers we know are legitimate.

  1. Microsoft: Xbox Series X | Xbox Series S – comes in an out of stock within seconds every few days
  2. Amazon: Xbox Series X | Xbox Series S – always check for surprise stock
  3. GameStop: Xbox Series X | Xbox Series S – last in stock Tuesday
  4. Walmart: Xbox Series X | Xbox Series S – last in stock Thursday of last week
  5. Target: Xbox Series X |Xbox Series S – was in stock Thursday
  6. Best Buy: Xbox Series X | Xbox Series S – last in stock last Friday
  7. B&H Photo: Xbox Series X and Series S
  8. Sam's Club: Xbox Series X | Xbox Series S
  9. Newegg: Xbox Series X and Series S
  10. Costco: Xbox Series X | Xbox Series S
  11. Adorama: Xbox Series X | Xbox Series S
  12. Antonline: Xbox Series X | Xbox Series S

We're tracking Xbox Series X restock at 12 stores in the US simply because the new console only lasts a few minutes at each store. Sometimes it feels like it's back in stock for only seconds. The good news is that our Xbox Series X restock Twitter tracker has helped a lot of people find the system down.

We've had success: about 25% of our Xbox Series X Twitter tracker replies show they got the new console from our alerts. It's gotten easier over time as more people get the Sony system – there's slightly less pressure today than there was two weeks ago.

Best Buy, Walmart and GameStop would have a Xbox restock, and our DMs are open to tips in case more people with inside knowledge want to clue everyone in on when to expect new console restock. We've gotten internal images from both Target and Best Buy in recent days.

It's important to point out that you won't be able to order from retail stores when we expect the Xbox restock. We don't want to be responsible for sending people to physical stores looking for an Xbox restock that doesn't exist for in-store purchase.

The Xbox restock pattern

The official Microsoft Xbox Store has had the most reliable Xbox Series X restock in the last week. But there our other US stores that have had restock recently: Walmart, Best Buy, Target, ANTonline and GameStop were the ones to check in early March.

The problem people are having is that stores like Walmart and Best Buy will initially come back in stock and sell out within seconds. They get turned off. However, with a few simple page refreshes, it may come back in stock.

American retailers release Xbox restock in short waves. Consumers are also likely to cancel their order midway through or their credit card gets denied and the inventory goes back into the system five minutes later. This is what extends restock and why we recommend being persistent.

Xbox Series X restock success stories

Through Twitter, we're tracking the next Xbox stock from 12 sources, and we've seen a few Xbox Series X consoles pop up over the last week and, even better news, high success rates for people who have been looking for restock for months.

Even if you don't get to buy the console today, there may be a Xbox drop any one of the days in the upcoming week.

PS5 restock time and date

TechRadar has exclusively on multiple PS5 drops in the last two weeks, and next we have information that says Amazon has inventory for next week. We'll circle back to confirm the time and date as soon as it's confirmed.

We're waiting to hear back from sources regarding inventory timing, however, we can tell you that 46,000 PlayStation 5 consoles are being prepped for an online order at Amazon.com.

With the help of warehouse sources, we've gotten other PS5 inventory projections right, including quantity, the time, and date of shipments.

Here's why the PS5 restock date and time is never set in stone at retail stores – and this may apply to Amazon, too: every warehouse that is due consoles needs to get them first. It's an inventory and logistic necessity, we're told.

Amazon, like Best Buy, may not sell through its full inventory to consumers. Some consoles may be held in case someone comes back with a console that's defective. We're told that's rare, but it does happen, so there needs to be enough stock to remedy those issues in each store.

Amazon PS5 restock tips

Ordering PS5 at Amazon is difficult simply because everyone has their credit card information and address plugged into their account. Simply put, there's no time to waste given one-click ordering offered Amazon over other retailers in the US.

That's different from Best Buy, which has sit that makes you wait out on a page until you can actually place the order.

PS5 restock explainer

PS5 has been nearly impossible to find in stock for more than a few minutes every time stores restock the Sony console. We're finding the same can be said about the Xbox Series X. Both Sony and Microsoft launches their respective consoles in November 2020 and haven't been able to manufacturer enough to meet demand.

Stores like Target, Walmart and Best Buy routinely add new stock to their stores and the crush of people coming to their sites often crashes the pages. Four months after the initial launches, it's still a burden to buy a next-gen console, even after months of customers constantly trying their luck.
