Google Photos, the search giant's popular online image storage and editing platform, has today announced it will no longer provide free, unlimited storage for ‘high quality’ photos and videos. Starting on June 1, 2021, any newly uploaded images will instead count towards the free 15GB of cloud storage that comes with every Google Account.

If you use Google Photos, any ‘high quality’ photos or videos you upload to the service before the June 1 deadline will not count towards that 15GB storage cap, even after the new rules come into play.

There’s no change being made to images or videos uploaded in ‘original quality’, as these are already counted towards an account's 15GB storage cap. The key difference between the two is that ‘original quality’ preserves files in their original resolution, while ‘high quality’ files are processed and compressed automatically by Google Photos to save space.

There is one notable group of users who are exempt from the changes: if you own any Pixel smartphone, from the original through to the brand new Pixel 5, you can continue uploading and storing as many high quality snaps and videos as you’d like without it contributing to your quota.

In a blog post, Google Photos says the switch is a necessary step that, “allows us to keep pace with the growing demand for storage”. Still, it’s sure to elicit a reaction from users who have been receiving free, unlimited storage of their memories in for over five years now.

Google estimates that once these changes take effect, around 80% of users should be able to store about three more years worth of photos and videos before they'll hit that 15GB free storage cap. The company also provides a personalized estimate, so you can see how much you have left. Other Google services such as Gmail and Drive also count towards your 15GB.

Once June 1, 2021 rolls around, Google is also introducing a new function that will spot dark or blurry photos, and even large videos, and ask if you want to delete them from your account.

If you find you've reached the 15GB cap, you’ll need to sign up for a Google One account to buy more storage space. Prices start at $1.99 / £1.99 / AU$1.99 per month for 100GB.

Microsoft's November 2020 Patch Tuesday has arrived which means Windows 10 administrators have their work cut out for them due to the sheer number of updates released by the software giant.

With its November 2020 Patch Tuesday security update release, the company has released fixes for a total of 112 different vulnerabilities in its products. Of the 112 vulnerabilities, 17 are classified as critical, 93 are classified as important and just two as moderate.

In its latest Patch Tuesday, Microsoft has also released a patch for a zero-day privilege escalation vulnerability in the Windows Kernel Cryptography Driver (cng.sys) tracked as CVE-2020-17087. This vulnerability was recently disclosed by Google's Project Zero security team after its researchers detected that it was being exploited in real-world targeted attacks.

Microsoft has patched vulnerabilities in a number of its products including Azure Sphere, Microsoft Dynamics, Microsoft Exchange Server, Microsoft Office, Windows 10, Visual Studio, Windows Defender and more and because of this, users should patch their systems now to avoid falling victim to any potential attacks leveraging these vulnerabilities.

Revamped Security Update Guide

Along with its recent series of security updates, Microsoft has also launched a new version of its Security Update Guide to make it easier for users and researchers alike to better understand the attributes of vulnerabilities in its software.

In a blog post, the Microsoft Security Response Center provided more details on the updated version of its Security Update Guide, saying:

“With the launch of the new version of the Security Update Guide, Microsoft is demonstrating its commitment to industry standards by describing the vulnerabilities with the Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS).  This is a precise method that describes the vulnerability with attributes such as the attack vector, the complexity of the attack, whether an adversary needs certain privileges, etc.”

While the Microsoft Security Response Center has been scoring Windows and browser vulnerabilities since 2016, now it will score every vulnerability and display the details that make up that score in the new version of its Security Update Guide.

At the same time, security researchers will also now be able to edit the columns displayed in the Security Update Guide to show a vulnerability's release date, CVE number, CVE title, description, articles, FAQ, mitigations and more.

Intel has announced fixes to almost a hundred security vulnerabilities as part of its monthly security disclosures; one of which uses a novel attack vector.

It is reported that one of the vulnerabilities can help launch an attack that could leak information through the Running Average Power Limit (RAPL) interface on mobile, embedded, desktop, and server processors.

The exploit has been dubbed Platypus, since it bears resemblance to the electroreception of the semi-aquatic Australian animal.

Power play

According to Intel, Platypus is part of the forty new security advisories that are related to the Converged Security and Management Engine (CSME) as well as the Intel Wireless Bluetooth support.

Security researchers have carried out power side-channel attacks earlier as well. However, unlike the earlier attacks that required an oscilloscope to monitor the energy consumption, Platypus attacks can be carried out remotely.

The attack works by exploiting the Running Average Power Limit (RAPL) interface that is designed to help users monitor and control the energy flowing through CPUs and memory.

The good news however is that these attacks don’t reveal much useful information and have only been exploited in research laboratories. Still, Intel has already released updated microcode and RAPL changes for Platypus.

Some of these mitigations have already been rolled into the Linux kernel, which now restricts access to the RAPL interface only to apps with elevated privileges.

Interestingly, while the researchers only focussed on Intel processors, almost every chipmaker includes a RAPL interface with their products, and could potentially be vulnerable to Platypus-type attacks.

Microsoft today announced an official launch date for the local beta 'preview' of its Project xCloud game streaming platform in Australia, as well as revealing the final list of games that will be available during the service’s public testing.

Project xCloud’s Preview Program will be available in Australia (as well as Brazil, Japan, and Mexico) starting next Wednesday, November 18, the tech giant announced in a blog post. It will only be available on Android devices at this stage.

If you're keen on trying the service out, you’ll need to register your interest in order to receive an invite from Microsoft to join its program, with the invites being sent out from Wednesday.

For those concerned about the program’s capacity, Microsoft has said that it wants “as many of you to get to play as possible” and that it will “continue to send out invites over the coming days and weeks”.

For those wanting a quick recap of what xCloud is, the service aims to give mobile and tablet users access to full console titles on their devices by streaming them in real-time from the cloud – or specifically, an array of powerful Microsoft servers.

For this kind of game streaming to work, you’ll need a fast internet connection to your Android device to ensure smooth video and avoid input latency from your controls.

The list of titles available to those that enter the Preview Program has also been announced by Microsoft, and is as follows:

  • ARK: Survival Evolved
  • Batman: Arkham Knight
  • Black Desert
  • Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon
  • CODE VEIN
  • Cricket 19
  • DayZ
  • Dead by Daylight: Special Edition
  • Destiny 2
  • Devil May Cry 5
  • eFootball PES 2020
  • F1 2019
  • Forza Horizon 4
  • Gears 5
  • Halo Wars 2: Standard Edition
  • Halo: The Master Chief Collection
  • Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice
  • HITMAN
  • Just Cause 4
  • Minecraft Dungeons – Windows 10
  • Ori and the Will of the Wisps
  • PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS
  • RESIDENT EVIL 7 biohazard
  • Sea of Thieves
  • Shadow of the Tomb Raider
  • Sid Meier’s Civilization VI
  • Skyforge
  • Smite
  • Stellaris: Console Edition
  • Tekken 7
  • WWE 2K20
  • Yakuza 0

While Microsoft hasn’t revealed a specific date, its full public release of Project xCloud is expected to arrive "in early 2021" and will incur a monthly subscription cost when it does land, although pricing is yet to be determined.

Voyo VBook i7Plus 2-in-1 Windows 10 tablet - $799.99 $679.99
(£527.12/AU$949.50)
The Voyo VBook might not be a household name, but the i7Plus (which looks a lot like the Surface Pro) is a real head-turner. Its high-resolution display, Core i7 CPU, 16GB RAM and massive 512GB SSD make this a seriously worthy Surface Pro rival.View Deal

Microsoft’s Surface product line has now firmly positioned itself as a viable alternative to Apple’s prestigious Mac range.

The Surface Pro business tablet has garnered a lot of attention from the professional community thanks to a great design and top feature set. Despite a patchy start, it’s safe to say that the Surface Pro range is here to stay.

No wonder, therefore, that other firms have sought to emulate Microsoft's success. Take the Voyo VBook i7Plus, for example, which looks a lot like the Surface Pro 5, complete with kickstand and magnesium alloy chassis.

It has a 12.6-inch OGS display with a 2880 x 1920 pixel resolution and a 3:2 aspect ratio, delivering a pixel density almost three times higher than a full HD display of equal diagonal size.

At just under $680 with a type cover keyboard, it is only slightly more expensive than the entry level Surface Go 2, but is of course capable of much more.

One field in which it outstrips its Microsoft rival is connectivity: there’s two full size USB 3.0 ports, a Type-C USB port, microSD card slot, micro HDMI connector and an audio jack. There’s also 16GB of RAM and a 512GB M.2 SSD (likely to be PCIe NVMe), plus Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth.

The only real corner cut to bring down the price is the inclusion of the 7th generation Intel Core i7-7500U processor, which comes with an Intel HD Graphics 620 GPU.

Bear in mind

Update(November 11): Added rear panel image and camera details.

Samsung Galaxy M12 could be official soon. The live image of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy device has been spotted and Samsung might finally bring a new design language to the M series.

The Samsung Galaxy M12 device was spotted by 91mobiles and it seems like the device is under development in Samsung facility in India. The report also suggests that the Samsung Galaxy M12 could be rebranded as the Galaxy F12 as they both seem to share the same model number.

A few days back, a new Samsung Galaxy smartphone with model number SM-F127G was spotted under development. And, now according to the new report, the Samsung Galaxy M12 also comes with “SM-M127F / SM-F127G” model number on the back panel. Furthermore, the report also says that the device might launch as Galaxy M05 as they could spot M05 moniker.

The Samsung Galaxy F series made its debut in India last month with the Galaxy F41. Although the series was entirely new the phone itself was water down version of the Galaxy M31 with slight changes.

The new Galaxy M12/F12 live image shows a new design language. For starters, there is a new textured finish. Most of the M series devices currently offer a matte finish on a plastic/glassitic back. The camera layout also now seems to be getting revamped. The live images show that the Samsung Galaxy M12/F12 might come with a square camera module instead vertical module. Just below the camera module, there is a cutout for the flash.

It looks like Samsung is going with the quad-camera setup with the mid-range devices. However, there is no cut-out for the fingerprint scanner which means Samsung might move to a side-mounted fingerprint scanner. Apart from that, we can see that the 3.5mm headphone jack is being retained.

And lastly, the device is said to offer a 6.7-inch punch-hole screen, a massive 7000mAh battery, just like we’ve seen on the Galaxy M51. Other details of the Galaxy M12/F12 is yet to be known.

A new report from 91mobiles also suggests that the upcoming Galaxy M12 might come with a unique dual-tone finish. The device is said to come with a textured finish on the top and glossy finish on the bottom. Apart from that, the quad-camera setup will stay on the top corner.
