Microsoft has delivered a fix for a highly frustrating issue that has been dogging Windows 10 2004 users since the summer.

The bug causes external monitors hooked up to Windows 10 devices with built-in screens (i.e. laptops and tablets) to black out whenever the user attempts to utilize drawing functions in Office 365 apps, such as Word.

According to a Microsoft advisory, the issue can also arise when using similar illustration facilities in other applications, including Microsoft Whiteboard.

Affected monitors cannot be revived until a restart is performed and users also found that a warning icon is attached to their graphics card in Device Manager, denoting an error.

Windows 10 update fix

The Windows 10 black screen bug could be particularly frustrating for anyone compiling a report that requires illustrations, for example, or teachers using Whiteboard to conduct virtual lessons over video conferencing services.

Thankfully, resolving the issue is now straightforward courtesy of a patch deployed by Microsoft as part of a recent Windows 10 update, which will have been installed automatically for a large portion of affected users.

The fix was delivered in a cumulative update (KB4577063) in early October, but the company did not update the status of the bug until very recently.

Users that are still suffering the black screen issue have likely disabled automatic Windows 10 updates, and can therefore remedy the problem by manually installing the latest available version via the Windows Update service.

Once the device reboots after the relevant update is installed, the affected monitor should revive itself and the user should be able to use drawing functionalities without triggering another error.

The black screen problem, however, is just one of a number of Windows 10 bugs affecting users at present.

This week, it emerged that a flaw in the OS was preventing some people from updating their Office apps, and another issue was found to be linked with installing Windows 10 via ISO files and other alternative media.

The Government of India has made dramatic changes to its regulations for the tech industry, including allowing companies to run their own VPN service.

When the regulations were in place, companies could only use provider provisioned VPNs to allow their employees to securely access their corporate network, remotely.

This requirement has now been dropped making it easier for companies of all sizes to allow their employees to work remotely.

Curing policy paralysis

The move is aimed at reducing the compliance burden of India’s Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) and IT enabled Services (ITeS) sectors.

Industry associations from India had previously called on the Indian Government to drop these regulations. They pointed out that these compliances were out of tune with the rest of the world and only added another layer of inconvenience for the IT sector already dealing with sagging bottom lines, accentuated by the pandemic.

The Indian Department of Telecom (DoT) had temporarily relaxed some of these guidelines at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic in the country, first in March 2020, and then again in April 2020. It has now decided to scrap them entirely, and has also allowed for some further relaxations.

According to reports, under the new rules, using VPNs that are not provisioned by telcos is now allowed. Furthermore, companies are also now allowed to route their International call traffic over VPNs.

The liberalized VPN use is just one part of the new relaxed policy that will now help companies more readily adopt ‘Work from Home’ and ‘Work from Anywhere’ policies, as per a press note from the Government.

Apple has released a new security update for iOS to address three zero-day vulnerabilities that are actively being exploited by cybercriminals in the wild.

According to the director of Google's Threat Analysis Group, Shane Huntley the three iOS zero-days are related to another trio of zero-days in its Chrome browser as well as to a Windows zero-day which was recently disclosed by the company's Project Zero security team.

In a tweet, Huntely confirmed that three iOS zero days were being used for targeted exploitation in the wild though they are not being used to target the 2020 election in the US. While the zero-days are currently being used in attacks, Google did not share any details regarding who is responsible or who was targeted.

iOS zero-days

iOS users should update their devices to iOS 14.2 to prevent falling victim to any potential attacks exploiting the three zero-days. The vulnerabilities have also been fixed in iPadOS 14.2 and watchOS 5.38, 6.2.9, and 7.1, though the fixes have also been backported to older iPhones via iOS 12.4.9.

The attacks leveraging the zero-days in iOS were discovered by Google's Project Zero security team which reported its findings to Apple.

According to Project Zero team lead Ben Hawkes the first zero day is a remote code execution flaw, tracked as CVE-2020-27930, in the iOS FontParser component that allows an attacker to run code remotely on iOS devices. The second zero-day is a privilege escalation vulnerability, tracked as CVE-2020-27932, in the iOS kernel that allows an attacker to run malicious code with kernel-level privileges. Finally the third zero-day is a memory leak in the iOS kernel, tracked as CVE-2020-27950, that allows an attacker to retrieve content from an iOS device's kernel memory.

The reason why iOS users are being urged to update their devices as soon as possible is because all three zero-days are used together as part of an exploit chain that allows an attacker to compromise iPhones remotely.
