GitHub’s home page malfunctioned earlier this week, with reports indicating that an expired SSL certificate was to blame.

 GitHub users reported being unable to access various resources, apparently because the SSL certificate issued to GitHub’s content delivery network (CDN) was only valid until November 2, 2020, 7:00 AM ET.

Technically, the issue is termed a “mixed content problem” because the main GitHub server did have a valid certificate, meaning that some aspects of the site, such as text-based content, continued to function properly. However, anything accessed from the separate CDN server, including images and JavaScript files, could not be loaded.

The outage lasted around 30 minutes before GitHub managed to acquire a new SSL certificate. The new certificate is due to expire in November 2021.

Certificate expired

Secure Sockets Layer, or SSL, certificates are a commonly used security protocol that informs online users that the communication between their web browser and a web server is encrypted. As a visual clue that a valid SSL certificate is in place, internet users should see a padlock next to any HTTPS URL that is using the SSL protocol.

Despite the importance of having a valid SSL certificate, a surprising number of online outlets forget to renew, leading to embarrassing outages. In recent times, HP and Roku users have experienced issues due to unforeseen certification problems.

Most of the time, these issues are easily averted simply by employing good forward planning. To avoid any future problems, someone at GitHub should set a reminder now to renew the SSL certificate before it expires next year.

The future of Apple displays has reportedly shifted from LCD to mini-LED. Before the end of 2020, Apple will begin to build the 2021 iPad Pro 12.9-inch with mini-LED displays, according to Korea ETNews (via MacRumors). 

That same report also says that this represents a total shift for Apple, as the company allegedly intends to use this same mini-LED backlight technology for its MacBook laptops and iMac desktops. LG would manufacture and supply the mini-LEDs to Apple.

This news corroborates an earlier report that Apple originally intended to launch a mini-LED iPad Pro this year, but decided to delay it to 2021 due to the 'complex panel design.' ETNews' report states that we should see the new iPad Pro 12.9-inch in the 'first quarter' of 2021.

What the report doesn't state is whether Apple will continue to sell other iPads with their current LCD screens. Currently, Apple also sells an 11-inch iPad Pro, along with the standard iPad and iPad Mini.

Mini-LED displays swap LED backlights for thousands of tiny backlights — 0.2mm or smaller — built into the panel itself, all of which can be individually controlled. This translates into greatly improved local dimming, deeper blacks and much better contrast and brightness. The technology is considered an affordable alternative to OLED.

Other companies buying into mini-LED

Last week, we learned that Nintendo could build its Nintendo Switch Pro with a mini-LED display that would support 4K capabilities in both docked and handheld mode. And it is just one of many companies looking to invest in the technology.

TCL's 6-Series televisions use mini-LED displays with over 1,000 nits of brightness and over 1,000 contrast control zones. Its upcoming 6-Series lineup will even support 120FPS gaming with auto-low latency, built to support the specs of the new Xbox Series X and PS5.

Plus, Samsung may also have plans to sell mini-LED TVs in 2021 with an expected contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1, according to Tom's Guide. Considering Samsung mostly focuses its premium TV efforts on its proprietary QLED technology, it's intriguing that it would choose to branch out to mini-LED televisions as well.

After consumers reported a gap between the screen and the phone’s metal body on their Google Pixel 5 handsets, the company has clarified that, yes, this is an intentional part of the design and that it will not impact its IP68 water or dust resistance.

The issue first appeared on XDA forums in mid-October, when user Sylabo first brought the issue to light, showing images of their new Pixel 5 and the visible gap between screen and phone body:

A Google support thread sprang up a day later, which recently got a response from an official Google specialist who confirmed that, after investigation, the ‘clearance between the body and the display is a normal part of the design of your Pixel 5.’ But if customers are concerned, Google will work with them on an individual basis.

The actual gaps in question are easier to see in person than in photos, several forum posters explained, but some images reveal a slight but visible space between the edge of the metal frame and the rounded edge of the screen, like this one from Google forums user Andy Richardson 6598.

None of the users have reported any damage from water or dust due to the gaps, though other commenters state not having gaps at all, suggesting production differences.

No damage yet, to be clear

Nobody has reported damage to their Pixel 5 devices yet, and in our review experience, we did not notice said gap until checking our unit against the aforementioned photos. 

We did notice uneven height on the camera block, which so far hasn't affected the phone. But user Refreshed on the same Google support thread had an identical issue and commented that they'd exchanged their phone anyway. 

Hardware issues are new for the Pixel line – previous issues have mostly been with the phone's software, like the Pixel 4's face unlock troubles and display color variations in the Pixel 2 XL that Google attempted to fix with software tweaks.

At just over $2.1 per inch ($88 for a 41.5-inch diagonal), the onn. Class FHD LED Roku Smart TV (100018254) takes the title of cheapest computer monitor and cheapest full HD TV set, inch-for-inch.

It's worth getting a move on, however, because this Black Friday deal won’t be around for long. 

Despite its dimensions, it is surprisingly light at less than 6Kg without the feet, making it easy to wall mount and also great for home security systems, paired with a DVR for constant CCTV monitoring.

While you can expect some corners to be cut, this is likely to be a loss-leader for Walmart, so the quality may be higher than you'd expect at this price.

Other than a full HD resolution, it also comes with Roku built in, which you can use to cast content to it wirelessly (e.g. a spreadsheet, presentation, video conferencing session etc).

The rest of the feature list is quite impressive as well, considering the price. There's a two year warranty, three HDMI (ARC) ports, an optical digital output, an audio-in port, cable and composite output, one USB connector, and two powerful 8W speakers with Dolby Audio.

Note, its panel refresh rate is 60Hz and its standby energy consumption is less than 500mW.
