As users have grown increasingly concerned about protecting their privacy online, Google has added a setting to Chrome that allow users to clear cookies and site data when they exit the browser.

However, a programmer recently discovered that while this setting wipes personal data from other sites, it doesn't do so for Google's own sites and services. Jeff Johnson provided further details on his discovery in a new blog post that shows how the browser clears cookies and site data for other sites but not for Google Search or YouTube.

While Chrome did delete the cookies left in Johnson's browser after quitting and relaunching YouTube, other site data including the database storage, local storage and service workers were still stored on his system. Johnson then repeated his tests using Google Search which sets some cookies and local storage. He found that after quitting Chrome and relaunching Google Search that the cookies it created had been deleted but the local storage was still there.

Most users are likely familiar with the way in which websites use cookies to identify them and store some of their online preferences. Site data is a bit different though as it includes a storage database where a site can store personal information about users on their computers. So while you can delete cookies or prevent Chrome from storing them, site data stored on your computer will be accessed the next time you visit a site and it could be used to identify you online.

Clear cookies and site data error

For users concerned about being tracked by Chrome by the browser failing to wipe site data from YouTube and Google Search, thankfully there is a workaround.

According to Johnson, users can bypass this by adding YouTube as well as Google Search to Chrome's list of “Sites that can never use cookies” in the browser's settings. This will prevent both services from storing data on your computer that could be used to track you.

Still though, the fact that cookies and site data are cleared from third-party sites and not Google's own services is a bit perplexing which led Johnson to wonder whether this is just a bug as opposed to an intentional behavior.

In its report on the matter, The Register shared Johnson's concerns which is why the news outlet reached out to Google and a company spokesperson provided the following statement on the issue, which reads:

"We are aware of a bug in Chrome that is impacting how cookies are cleared on some first-party Google websites. We are investigating the issue, and plan to roll out a fix in the coming days."

If you can't wait for Google's upcoming fix, you can always use Johnson's workaround to prevent Google Search and YouTube from saving site data.

For Apple and its boss Tim Cooks, India became their go-to destination, whether it is to get their iPhones manufactured or to promote their streaming platform Apple TV Plus. As a follow up, the company has brought one of urban India's favourite cartoon characters Charlie Brown to enthral both adults and kids in the holiday season.

Early in September, the streaming platform had taken over Apple's India website and issued a warning to competitors about.  The company announced that it had done a deal with WildBrain, Peanuts Worldwide and Lee Mendelson Film Productions to bring together the new original series and specials along with earlier editions.

A press statement on Apple's website says the new animated "Peanuts" originals on Apple TV Plus would include a second season of the Daytime Emmy-nominated “Snoopy in Space,” and a slate of brand-new specials that will find the “Peanuts” gang marking Mother’s Day, Earth Day, New Year’s Eve and going back to school – all to be produced by WildBrain’s animation studio.

The new series and specials join the previously announced “The Snoopy Show”; a brand-new “Peanuts” 70th anniversary documentary film from Imagine Documentaries and WildBrain; and the Daytime Emmy Award-winning “Peanuts in Space: Secrets of Apollo 10." These would stream alongside other Peanuts specials starting October and would be available worldwide.

The other “Peanuts” specials, including “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” “A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving” and “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.” The statement further said that Apple TV Plus would launch "A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving" on November 18 which would be available from November 25.

The Peanuts gang will also deck the halls with the premiere of “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” streaming exclusively on Apple TV+ on December 4. The holiday special will be available to enjoy for free from December 11 until December 13, the press release said.

Apple's streaming service has had a steady release of programming all year that includes the likes of game development sitcom Mythic Quest, US football coach-turned-soccer-manager comedy Ted Lasso and the documentaries Boys State and Beastie Boys Story

In India, some of the shows that attracted attention include Central Park, Home, and the Elephant Queen. Of course, Apple's biggest catch yet came in the form of the Tom Hanks World War-2 saga Greyhound, which saw subscriptions spike by 30% worldwide with several Indian households shelling out Rs.99 a month to watch it.

Charlie Brown's adventures and cartoons have a huge fan following among the urban middle class in the big metropolitan cities and Apple TV Plus appears to be pushing in the right direction by getting the series on to the platform.

3.84TB Adata SU630 SSD - $374 at DirectDial
(roughly £290)
For a high capacity solid state drive, this 3.84TB model from Adata is seriously affordable. When we first discovered it, we couldn't quite believe our eyes.View Deal

The Adata 3.84TB SU630 is the world’s cheapest high-capacity SSD right now. Nothing comes even close above the 2TB mark; this drive is the only model that costs less than $100 per TB.

At $374 from online retailer DirectDial, it focuses more on the prosumer market than on enterprise, as highlighted by its SATA interface and a three-year warranty (just make sure you sort out cloud storage to back up all that data).

At first, we thought the listed price was a typo, but Adata has confirmed it is indeed bonafide. The 2.5-inch SATA SSD snatches the crown for the most affordable large capacity SSD right now from the former reigning champion, the Micron 5210 Ion.

The Ion is an enterprise drive that uses QLC technology and has a five-year warranty - the same as the previous capacity champion, the Seagate Nytro 1351.

We've never tested the Adata SU630, but we did review the SD600Q (a ruggedized external SSD), which we think could share the same components.

Back then, we wrote that it was the first drive from an independent maker of SSDs based on 64-layer, 3D QLC NAND, likely from Intel. The SSD controller, meanwhile, is almost certainly a Maxio Technology MAS0902A.

The endurance of the SU630 is rated at up to 40,000 read and up to 65,000 write IOPS in the case of the 480GB and 960GB SKUs, with sequential read/write performance hitting 520MBps/450MBps.

All in all, an excellent deal made even better thanks to a three-year warranty.

Google Chrome and other Chromium-based browsers have begun leaving a mysterious file called “debug.log” on the desktops of Windows 10 users.

Although it has been widely reported by users who have discovered the file that Windows 10 created it, new research from Windows Latest has revealed that Chromium browsers and not Microsoft are in fact responsible.

The open-source platform Chromium powers many of today's most popular web browsers including Chrome, Brave, Opera, Vivaldi and Edge. As the source code created by the open source project is used by all of these browsers, a bug in Chromium will affect all of them which appears to the be case in this instance.

Mysterious debug file

Following a recent update to Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome and other Chromium-based browsers earlier this month, users noticed that a file called “debug.log” began appearing on their desktops along with an error message which reads: “FindFirstFile: The System cannot find the path specified”.

While the file itself appears to be harmless, manually deleting it from a user's desktop is ineffective as the file recreates itself upon deletion.

Thankfully though, there is a way in which users can prevent Chromium browsers from creating the debug.log file on their desktops.

To fix the debug.log file bug, users should first open Windows Run by pressing Win+R or typing “Run” into the the start menu in Windows 10. From there you'll need to enter %localappdata%\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Crashpad if you're running Microsoft Edge or %localappdata%\Google\Chrome\User Data\Crashpad if you're running Chrome to locate a folder called Crashpad.

Once you've found the folder, you'll need to delete all of the files and folders inside it before restarting your computer. This will fix the issue and prevent your browser from leaving a debug.log file on your desktop.
