Google quietly discontinued its Nest Secure last week, officially removing its home security system from the Google Store. Current Nest owners won't be affected, but new DIY home security shoppers will have to turn elsewhere.

While Google has assured that current Nest Secure owners won't lose access to any functionality, it confirmed that this isn't temporary: Google will no longer sell Nest Secure packages moving forward, according to a statement sent to Android Police

Nest Secure was a well-reviewed DIY home security package that included a Nest Guard hub with an alarm, motion sensor and keypad; a key fob for instant disarming; and Nest Detect sensors for alerting if doors or windows are opened, all for a pricey $399 in the US. The individual components are also out of stock on the Google Store.

The Nest security brand isn't dead yet. You can still buy Nest Cam Outdoor, Nest Cam Indoor and Nest Hello video doorbells, and have them professionally monitored with a Nest Aware subscription. And your Nest Hub Max can serve as the control center and self-monitoring station for your security cams.

Yet for a traditional DIY security experience with an entry keypad and door / window sensors to detect entry, Nest no longer fits the bill.

Considering Google recently invested millions in ADT, which itself owns the DIY home security brand Blue by ADT, it's fair to wonder if Google is shifting its Nest brand away from that category so that it doesn't compete against its new partner.

The best DIY home security alternatives

TechRadar Pro has a detailed list of the top ten home security systems (with Nest Secure listed at number 7, for now). But we have a quick breakdown of substitute picks that offer the security protections that Google and Nest have left behind.

The Abode DIY Home Security System offers a starter package for $199 (half the price of Nest Secure), along with additional a la carte accessories that you can easily install yourself.

What makes Abode a good choice in general is the reasonable pricing and home automation features, like turning on smart bulbs when a camera detects motion. It's also specifically a good choice for Nest Cam owners, as the only non-Google security system that can respond to Nest Cam alerts using IFTTT.

If you're not specifically interested in Nest devices, and just want a good DIY home security system, your choice is between Abode, Frontpoint, Ring Alarm and SimpliSafe.

Frontpoint offers a comprehensive selection of its own cameras, sensors and smart home tech, and works with Alexa and Google Home, but also has an expensive, mandatory monitoring plan.

Ring Alarm gives you a keypad and sensors, and pairs with the affordable and reliable Ring security cameras, for a reasonable starting price. Monthly pro monitoring is among the cheapest in the industry, but Ring's home automation features are limited, and you can only use Alexa to control it, not Google Assistant.

SimpliSafe is another DIY system with a cheap starter package, reasonably priced professional monitoring, and a good catalog of cameras, sensors and smart home tech. Like Ring, its home automation support is fairly limited, but it's very easy to install and emphasizes protection through door / window sensors and motion detection.

Google's Threat Analysis Group has revealed that state-sponsored hackers launched the largest ever recorded distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack against the company back in 2017.

The attack was launched by a Chinese Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) group, often referred to by the name APT31, and it lasted for more than six months during which time it reached a peak of 2.5 Tbps in traffic.

According to a new blog post from the director of Google's Threat Analysis Group Shane Huntley, the company's Security Reliability Engineering team measured a record breaking UDP amplification attack that originated from four Chinese Internet Service Providers (ISPs). Huntley provided further insight on the use of DDoS attacks by state-sponsored hackers, in his post, saying:

“While it’s less common to see DDoS attacks rather than phishing or hacking campaigns coming from government-backed threat groups, we’ve seen bigger players increase their capabilities in launching large-scale attacks in recent years.”

Growing DDoS attacks

While other cyberattacks are designed to steal user data from companies, DDoS attacks aim to disrupt an organization's service with a flood of useless traffic. If these attacks aren't mitigated in a timely fashion, they can result in a loss of user trust which can hurt a business' reputation as well as its bottom line.

Organizations defending against DDoS attacks must consider every possible target of an attack from the network layer including routers, switches and link capacity to the application layer that includes web, DNS and mail servers. However, some attacks don't focus on a single target and instead attack every IP in a network.

To better understand trends in DDoS attack volumes, Google groups volumetric attacks by network bits per second (bps) for attacks targeting network links, network packets per second for attacks targeting network equipment or DNS servers and by HTTP(S) requests per second (rps) for attacks targeting application servers. This allows the company to focus on ensuring each system has sufficient capacity to withstand attacks.

In addition to the DDoS attack recorded by Google in 2017, the company has also shared more details on some of the biggest DDoS attacks ever recorded. These include a 690 Mbps attack generated by an IoT botnet earlier this year as well as a network man-in-the-middle (MitM) attack from 2014 that flooded YouTube with requests peaking at 2.7 millions of requests per second (Mrps).

The 2.5 Tbps attack Google experienced in 2017 didn't cause any impact as the company reported thousands of vulnerable servers to their network providers and worked with them to trace the source of spoofed packets so they could be filtered.

Google believes that we need to work together for collective security in order to reduce the impact of DDoS attacks. To do so, individual users must ensure their devices are patched and secured while businesses should report criminal activity, ask network providers to trace the sources of spoofed attack traffic and share information on attacks with the internet community.

The Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Gen 1 is one of the fastest business laptops in the market thanks to its 8-core Ryzen 7 PRO processor. At less than $770 when you use the eCoupon THINK45, it is a very capable workstation that will deliver when it counts.

You can make the X13 Gen 1 far better by boosting the onboard storage, moving to Windows 10 Pro, a fingerprint reader and improving the display by swapping the screen for a full HD one for less than $200, making it a better deal in our view.

Lenovo has started to roll out the AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 4750U processor to its mainstream, award winning ThinkPad X business laptop, the X13 Gen 1. This is AMD’s answer to Intel’s vPro platform and it comes with eight cores, 8MB cache, 16 threads and a boost speed of up to 4.1GHz.

The entry level version (20UFCTO1WW) is equipped with Windows 10 Home, 8GB DDR4 memory, a 128GB PCIe SSD and a 13.3-inch HD display. The rest of the configuration includes Wi-Fi 6/Bluetooth 5.1, a physical cover for the webcam, a Wake On Voice feature plus the iconic red dot “nipple” controller. The laptop has been tested against 12 military-grade requirements and more than 200 quality checks.

The 48Wh, 6-cell battery is decent, procuring up to 12 hours battery life, while the six ports (including four USB connectors) and the dual far-field microphones should prove to be enough for most tasks. Of interest is the fact that two of the USB ports are DisplayPort compatible - given the presence of a HDMI port -and this should allow users to power up to three 4K monitors.
