On a day when Paytm, which has a running feud with Google, launched its own mini app store, the American tech giant announced that it has deferred the implementation of 30% commission on in-app purchases of digital goods from its Play Store in India to March 2022.

Google seems to have taken a step back after Indian developers voiced their opposition to Google's alternative payment systems.

Google said it was "extending the time for developers in India to integrate with the Play billing system, to ensure they have enough time to implement the UPI for subscription payment option that will be made available on Google Play -- for all apps that currently use an alternative payment system we set a timeline of 31st March 2022."

Globally though the fee is set to come into effect from September, 2021.

Google to listen to Indian startups

The American tech company seems to be concerned by the backlash among the Indian tech companies to its new payment policy.

Google said: "Being mindful of local needs and concerns, we’ve taken the following immediate steps:

*We are setting up listening sessions with leading Indian startups to understand their concerns more deeply;

*We will be setting up Policy Workshops to help clear any additional questions about our Play Store policies."

And, of course, it has extended the deadline for developers in India to integrate with the Play billing system.

Purnima Kochikar, Director of Business Development, Games & Applications, Google Play, said in a blog, "we consider it extremely important to understand the concerns across the ecosystem, and these listening sessions over the next several weeks will help us find comprehensive solutions that work for everyone. When a developer succeeds on the Play Store, we consider it our biggest win."

She added: "At Google we have always had a long and deep commitment to India, and working alongside the startups and developers has given us a more meaningful understanding of how technology can be more helpful. And so we remain committed to engaging with the community, to listen and find the right ways to help the Indian ecosystem grow and flourish."

Has Google taken a step back?

The decision to extend the deadline for Indian developers shows that Google is slightly uncomfortable with the developments in India. As we said, Paytm has launched a mini apps store. Further, Paytm, which got temporarily ousted from the Play Store, seems to be spearheading a campaign for developing an Indian alternative to the Google Play Store.

A bunch of Indian technology entrepreneurs have had a meeting last week and discussed ways and means to set up a platform that will host apps, especially Indian ones and not be at the mercy of companies like Google and Apple.

For Google, India is a huge and important market. Close to 90% of Indian smartphones operate on its Android eco system. If Google takes a hit in Indian market, it will have larger ramifications for it.

All these would mean that Google, at least for the time being, has eased off on its aggression in the Indian market.

Indian digital payments major Paytm has launched its own ‘Android Mini App Store’ to support Indian developers, and in the event, fired its salvo in its ongoing battle with Google.

Mini apps are custom-built mobile websites that give users an app-like experience without requiring an actual download. It can be built using HTML and Javascript technologies. A web app opens on the web browser and this can benefit users by helping them save their data and memory.

Paytm has added a new section on its main application wherein these mini apps are listed and can be accessed by Paytm app users.

Paytm promises seamless experience

Paytm said that it aims to support Indian developers through its new initiative. Paytm will provide listing and distribution of these mini-apps within its app. Paytm is giving the option to pay via Paytm Wallet, Paytm Payments Bank, and UPI at zero charge, while levying a 2% fee for payments through credit card.

In a press release, Vijay Shekhar Sharma, chief executive of Paytm, said. “I am proud that we are today launching something that creates an opportunity for every Indian app developer. Paytm Mini App Store empowers our young Indian developers to leverage our reach and payments to build new innovative services. For Paytm users, it will be a seamless experience that doesn't require any separate download and enables them to use their preferred payment option".

Paytm has claimed that it has tied up with more than 300 app-based providers and brands like Decathlon, 1MG, Netmeds, Park+, Rapido, Domino’s Pizza, FreshMenu and NoBroker.

This app store has been running in beta with select users and witnessed over 12 million visits in September, Paytm said.

Paytm's fight with Google

Analysts see the quick launch of the app store as a direct result Paytm app being temporarily removed from Google’s Play Store in September for violating developer guidelines on real-money gaming.

Paytm hit back saying that Google was behaving as a judge, jury and executioner in this case and did not give enough time to allow Paytm to explain its stand on the issue.

It is also pertinent to point out that Google's Google Pay and Paytm are major rivals in India’s Rs 2 trillion digital payments market.

Last week, Google has also mandated that all apps selling digital goods within its Play Store had to use its billing system. And Google levies a 30% commission on any transaction made for a digital product or service through its in-app billing system.

In such a competitive scenario, Paytm apart from launching its mini app store, is also grouping up like-minded companies to launch an Indian alternative to the Google Play Store.

So stay tuned for more action in the coming days.

HyperDrive Gen2 docking station - $199.99 at B&H
(roughly £150)
This laptop docking station is unbelievably well stacked, allowing you to connect up to 18 pieces of kit at once - monitor, external storage, mouse, keyboard etc. Check it out now!View Deal

The rise of thin and light laptops means users are not always thinking about connectivity when choosing their next business notebook. Instead, battery life and portability are very often the two most important factors.

This partly explains the newfound popularity of laptop docking stations and USB-C hubs, which effectively multiply the number of ports on any given laptop. One particular docking station, the HyperDrive Gen2, offers even greater connectivity than the rest.

It hooks up to a computer via USB-C and allows the device to connect to a maximum of 18 peripherals, storage devices and monitors. Despite the number of ports, it's also absolutely tiny (at only 133 x 95 x 44mm) and weighs just over 600g.

It can connect to up to three 4K displays at once, although technically you could attach two more displays on top (one to legacy VGA and another through the USB Type-C port).

There’s a Gigabit Ethernet port, a total of seven USB ports (three USB 2.0, two 10Gbps USB-A and two USB-C, one with a rated 100W power delivery) and two memory card readers (microSD and SD).

Other surprising features include an optical audio connector, a digital coaxial audio connector and an optional 180W DC power port.

Available at under $199 (roughly £150), the HyperDrive Gen2 is a serious bargain.

The depleted 49ers embarrassed the New York Giants in Week 3, storming to a massive 36-9 victory on the East Coast despite missing nearly 10 of their regular starters, including QB Jimmy Garoppolo. They might not need him against the winless Eagles, who have been one of the biggest disappointments of the new season. Read on as we explain how to watch the NFL online and get an Eagles vs 49ers live stream wherever you are right now.

Nick Mullens stepped up in Garoppolo's absence, throwing for 343 yards and a touchdown, Brandon Aiyuk scored his first NFL touchdown, and the 49ers forced three turnovers. Jimmy G, however, may recover from his ankle injury in time for this one. Star tight end George Kittle could also feature after hurting his knee in Week 1.

Huge credit should go to Kyle Shanahan for getting San Francisco through the past three weeks with such a threadbare squad. The reigning NFC champs are 2-1, and goodness knows how much they could achieve if they ever manage to get the bulk of their key men fit and healthy.

How to watch Eagles vs 49ers: live stream NFL in Australia

If you live in Australia and want to watch the NFL this season, you have several options to do so and are generally well covered.

The best news? Both plans come with a FREE 14-day trial so if you're looking just to watch a specific game or two you can cancel after the 14 days.

For the diehards, we highly recommend you sign up for an NFL Game Pass, which gives you access to every game around.

Should I buy an NFL Game Pass?

Watching NFL online has never been easier thanks to the wide variety of streaming services now available. However, the league also has its own streaming service called the NFL Game Pass which allows die-hard football fans to watch every game.

It's really geared towards international fans and that's where it's a great option. In most of the NFL's main international markets, a Game Pass Pro subscription will get you access to every single regular season and playoff game live, plus the Super Bowl, and you also get the league's live highlights show, RedZone. It costs £14.99 a week or £143.99 a year, so if you're a big fan who watches multiple games every week, it breaks down quite favourably.

As well as the UK and Ireland, the service is available in countries like Mexico, Germany and most of Europe, and Australia - with only 'domestic markets' the US and Canada missing out on the full-fat offering.

Instead, there's a US and Canada-only Game Pass option available for $99 a a year that lets you watch commercial-free full game replays right after they've finished. Not the worst offer we've ever heard, but don't get caught out - GamePass does not offer live NFL games in the US or Canada.

Should you decide to give Game Pass a shot, apps for Android and iOS mobile devices as well as on the likes of Chromecast, Apple TV, Roku, PS4, and more - plus you can obviously watch on your laptop or desktop computer through a browser.

The only caveat for non-domestic markets (e.g. the UK) are that some games are subject to blackout restrictions due to deals with local pay TV providers (e.g. Sky).
