Gionee, the smartphone maker who was under the radar for the last few years in India, has unveiled an entry-level affordable phone dubbed the Ginoee Max. 

Just like what the company was testing ahead of the launch on Flipkart, the Gionee Max is having a big battery, big screen for an immersive experience and is priced under Rs 6,000.

For starters, the Ginoee Max comes with a 6.1-inch HD+ screen with a resolution of 1,560 x 720 pixels. It is having a 2.5D curved glass screen protection. Under the hood, the device powered by an octa-core Spreadtrum 9863A chipset clocked at 1.6GHz and IMG8322 GPU will take care of graphics. The handset is available in a single variant with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. There is also microSD card slot which supports up to 256GB of additional storage. 

On to the optics, you get a 13MP primary camera and a secondary digital camera of an unknown resolution. The selfies will be handled by 5MP snapper which is housed inside the dew-drop notch. Powering the device is a massive 5,000mAh battery. It offers you about 24 hours of music playback, 9 hours of movie-watching, and around 42 hours of call time. Further, taking advantage of the massive battery, the device also supports reverse charging which means you can be used the Gionee Max as a power bank when needed. The device runs on Android 10 OS.

Furthermore, it comes with the face unlock feature for authentication as there is no fingerprint scanner. Other features of the Gionee Max includes Dual SIM, Bluetooth 4.2, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, 3.5mm headphone jack. 

The Gionee Max is priced at Rs 5,999 and will go on sale via Flipkart on August 31. It is available in three colour options Black, Red, and Blue.

This offer is only available to Flybuys members, and you must sign up before September 30.

That said, this a great value deal. By comparison, Optus’ regular and cheapest SIM-only plan is AU$39 per month and only gets you 10GB of data.

Chinese manufacturer KUU has appeared on our radar repeatedly since the beginning of 2020, most recently with the K1 (which we reviewed).

The firm currently has three sub-$260 laptops: the Kbook Pro, the Kbook and the Xbook. They all come with 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD, providing enough memory and storage to run Windows 10 Pro (the OS bundled with these laptops) adequately.

While they share the same 14.1-inch IPS display, the Xbook stands out because of its yet-to-be-announced Intel Celeron J4115 processor and sharper, more audacious design.

The designers have used a fine ceramic sandblasting process to give it what KUU calls an "ultra-modern minimalist design". In other words, it looks good and reminds us vaguely of the Xiaomi Mi Laptop Air, eschewing rounded edges and embracing something which feels deliberately more modern.

The processor used in the Xbook is about 50% faster than the 3450 present in the KBook Pro. The rest of the specification sheet, though, is fairly standard across all three devices: a headphone jack, microSD slot, two USB ports, proprietary charging port and an HDMI port.

Although we haven’t yet reviewed the Xbook (we’re being sent one), we do foresee a few potential issues. For example, the 5,000mAh battery, which should deliver only five hours battery life (and potentially less) because the J4115 is likely to have a higher TDP.

As Apple nears the expected launch of its iPhone 12 range of flagship handsets, the leaks and rumors have been flowing thick and fast. The latest comes from a video from Front Page Tech, which claims to have a pretty good idea of how the new phone will look and perform.

The video claims to show hands-on time with a PVT (Product Validation Testing) version of the iPhone 12 Pro Max. PVT is a particularly late step in the process of producing a new phone, with the next major stage being the actual mass production.

One of the trending themes in recent iPhone 12 leaks has been the inclusion of LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging), and this new video appears to further confirm that it'll be included in at least some iPhone 12 models. You can check out our article taking a deep dive into LiDAR’s usefulness, but in short, it would allow for more AR (Augmented Reality) shenanigans as seen in the iPad Pro (2020).

There’s also more word on the potential of a 120Hz refresh rate for the new iPhone 12 displays. Today's video includes footage of a previously-leaked settings screen with an option to “enable high refresh rate” as well as the ability to toggle “adaptive refresh rate” which will “alter the refresh rate from 120Hz to 60Hz in accordance to the content displayed on-screen”.

The leaked video contains extensive footage of the iPhone 12 Pro Max’s display, as the leaker navigates the settings and enables the enhanced refresh rate option. This footage also shows off the unit’s notch, which appears identically sized to its predecessor, the iPhone 11.

It’s important to note that these settings are only confirmed as being found on the PVT model of the iPhone 12 Pro Max, so that doesn’t 100% guarantee the feature will ship in the final model, or if it will be available on other models.

Our best guess at this stage is that the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max will both feature 120Hz displays while the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Plus will have the regular 60Hz displays instead.

Some other notable settings include the option to record footage at both 4K/120fps as well as “4K/240fps Slow Mo”, allowing for the ability to capture some very high resolution footage at a silky smooth framerate.

Face ID apparently is now more effective, working to unlock your device more quickly and from a wider range of angles, the bezels on the device are noticeably thinner, and the edges of the device are flat, akin to the iPhone 5 design.

Naturally, these are far from officially released specs, so a grain of salt is needed when taking them in, but given that there’s actual footage of what is claimed to be a PVT model of the iPhone 12 Pro Max, this provides some of the best confirmation so far that these features are real. We'll find out, one way or another, come launch day.

Microsoft is making video conferencing even better for businesses using Microsoft Teams with a new feature called Coordinated Meetings.

To take advantage of this feature, organizations will need to have one or more Microsoft Teams Rooms devices as well as a Surface Hub in their meeting room. If these conditions are met, Coordinated Meetings will allow users to sync all of these devices together so that when they join a meeting on one device, the other devices in the room also join the same meeting.

While Microsoft's Surface Hub 2S is capable of joining Teams meetings by itself, the device wasn't designed with video conferencing in mind. The Surface Hub also runs its own operating system which means the Microsoft Teams Rooms app can't be set up on the device, plus certified audio and video devices can't be plugged into it. So a large organization may already have a Surface Hub in its meeting room in addition to one or more Microsoft Teams Rooms devices.

Coordinated Meetings

How an organization configures their Coordinated Meeting setup is up to them but Microsoft recommends that Teams Rooms devices are used for the microphone and camera while the Surface Hub can act as a white board or an additional display during the meeting.

In a support document, Microsoft explains why organizations may want to set up a Coordinated Meeting as opposed to allowing participants to use their own devices, saying:

“You can configure your cameras, speakers, and microphones so that the ones that give participants the best experience are enabled while others are disabled. This avoids the dreaded echo and feedback noise participants can experience when adding multiple devices to a meeting.”

While this new feature is certainly not for everyone, it's nice to see Microsoft provide organizations with a new way to use the devices they already have to enhance their meetings.
