Lexmark C2425DW - £129.99 / $299.99
Color laser printers are currently more expensive than they have been in the past, but we've sniffed out the cheapest option available (that's currently in stock). It prints 23 pages per minute, features a large paper tray and a compact footprint, so check it out!

How cheap can a brand new color laser printer be? It turns out, in the post-pandemic new era, far less affordable than before - and in some cases, double the price.

The cheapest color laser printer we found available in stock today is the single-function (as opposed to multi-function) Lexmark C2425DW.

It boasts a printing speed of 23 pages per minute, far higher than any inkjet printer in this price range and also features USB, wireless and Gigabit Ethernet connectors, making it a great printer for SMBs as well.

Add in automatic duplex printing, a large paper tray, tiny footprint and fast processor and this genuinely looks like an amazing printer deal.

Hidden extras

However, this deal might not be as sweet as it seems, given the price of the consumables.

The printer only comes with starter black (750-page) and color (500-page) cartridges. Purchasing a full set of high capacity printer cartridges (2500-page color and 3000-page black) will cost you about twice as much as the printer itself.

So, while the C2425DW is cheap in the short term, its total cost of ownership and cost per print is quite high - probably up there with the most expensive on the market (even if you don't have to buy a new drum).

Gone are the days, though, where it's cheaper for businesses to buy a new printer every time they run out of toner; great for your accountant, but not so great for the environment.

Bear in mind

  • If this model is unavailable in your region, you may need to use a specialist parcel forwarding service to take advantage of the deal.
  • If you've managed to get hold of a cheaper product with equivalent specifications, in stock and brand new, let us know and we'll tip our hat to you.

After having officially ditched OLED earlier this year, Chinese manufacturer Hisense has finally confirmed that it's bringing its impressive Dual Cell TV sets to Australia, announcing a mid-September release date for the upcoming Hisense 65SX television.

Employing two precision-bonded LCD layers (one cell for colour and a grayscale cell for luminance), Hisense says its new 65-incher is able to produce a lighting effect equivalent to having over 2 million dimming zones, delivering near-OLED black levels without sacrificing brightness.

As explained by Hisense, the "grayscale cell sits behind the colour cell and blocks light from pixels that need to be darker, creating more than 2 million dimming zones that can be controlled with remarkable precision to a deliver true-to-life picture."

Additionally, the Hisense 65SX supports Dolby Vision HDR, meaning it's capable of adjusting colour and contrast on a scene-by-scene basis using dynamic metadata.

According to Hisense, the new Dual Cell TV also takes advantage of the company's Hi-View Engine, utilising depth enhancement and AI-powered 4K upscaling technology to help produce crisper, clearer images all round.

Live sports coverage and gaming should also benefit thanks to dedicated sports and game modes, along with the 65SX's 200Hz smooth motion capability.

In terms of smarts, the 65SX is powered by Hisense's VIDAA 4 operating system, which now sports a cleaner interface and voice control support thanks to the inclusion of in-built Amazon Alexa functionality – no need for an additional device.

It's not all about picture, though – Hisense's Dual Cell TV is said to boast audio that approaches soundbar-levels of quality, thanks to the inclusion of an external 4.1-inch subwoofer (which can be used wirelessly or plugged directly into the 65SX) and built-in Dolby Atmos support.

Priced at AU$3,499, the 65-inch Hisense 65SX will be available for purchase from Australia's major electronics retailers from mid-September – keep an eye on TechRadar for hands-on coverage in the near future.

Microsoft could be preparing to give the interface of the Start Menu and Action Center in Windows 10 a major overhaul according to a new code reference spotted in preview builds of its operating system.

As reported by Windows Latest, the software giant recently published Windows 10 Build 20197 to Windows Insiders in the program's Dev Channel.

Senior program manager of the Windows Insider Program Brandon LeBlanc offered further insight on the preview build's most important feature in a blog post, saying:

“We mentioned we had more Settings work on the way, and here’s the next one – as of today’s build you’ll now be able to manage your disks and volumes from within the Settings app. This includes tasks such as viewing disk information, creating and formatting volumes, and assigning drive letters.”

However, in addition to a new Disk Manager and long list of bug fixes, the preview build also includes references to 'WinUI' for both Windows 10's Start Menu and Action Center.

Win UI

A scan of the Microsoft Program Database (PDB) files in Windows Build 20197 shows that the software giant is currently testing a number of new features relating to Windows 10's user interface including WinUIOnDesktop, WinUIDesktopActionCenter and WinUIDesktopStartMenu.

For those unfamiliar, Win UI is Microsoft's next generation user interface platform for Windows Windows 10 and Windows 10X. The company also provided more details on WinUI and how developers can leverage the new framework in a support document, saying”

“The Windows UI Library (WinUI) is a native user experience (UX) framework for both Windows Desktop and UWP applications. By incorporating the Fluent Design System into all experiences, controls, and styles, WinUI provides consistent, intuitive, and accessible experiences using the latest user interface (UI) patterns. With support for both Desktop and UWP apps, you can build with WinUI from the ground up, or gradually migrate your existing MFC, WinForms, or WPF apps using familiar languages such as C++, C#, Visual Basic, and Javascript (via React Native for Windows).”

Based on the references inside its latest preview build, Microsoft may end up allowing Windows 10's Start Menu and Action Center to use UI components from Win UI in an effort to improve consistency across its entire operation system.
