Owners of Amazon Echo devices have been warned that their systems may have been compromised due to a security flaw in the Alexa voice recognition service.

Researchers from security firm Check Point found vulnerabilities in certain Amazon and Alexa subdomains that could have allowed outsider access to a user's voice history.

This includes all voice searches and conversation history made by a user, and could mean that personal data would be accessed and potentially stolen.

Alexa security flaw

Alexa users could have been easily tricked into falling for the vulnerability, which reportedly only needed a single click on a malicious link crafted and sent by the hacker.

Check Point says the attack could also have allowed hackers to remove or install apps (known as skills) on the victim’s Alexa account, meaning malicious programs could have been inserted to steal more personal information.

As well as clicking on the malicious link, some form of voice interaction would also have been needed. The researchers noted that hackers could get around this by creating a separate Alexa skill that required the same activation phrase as a legitimate service, so that when the user uttered the "invocation phrase" needed, it unwittingly activated the malicious skill.

“Smart speakers and virtual assistants are so commonplace that it’s easy to overlook just how much personal data they hold, and their role in controlling other smart devices in our homes. But hackers see them as entry points into peoples’ lives, giving them the opportunity to access data, eavesdrop on conversations or conduct other malicious actions without the owner being aware,” said Oded Vanunu, Head of Products Vulnerabilities Research at Check Point.

“We conducted this research to highlight how securing these devices is critical to maintaining users’ privacy. We hope manufacturers of similar devices will follow Amazon’s example and check their products for vulnerabilities that could compromise users’ privacy. Alexa has concerned us for a while now, given its ubiquity and connection to IoT devices. It’s these mega-digital platforms that present the biggest security risk and can hurt us the most. Therefore, their security levels are of crucial importance.”

Check Point says it reported the issue to Amazon in June 2020, with the company fixing the flaw soon after.

"The security of our devices is a top priority, and we appreciate the work of independent researchers like Check Point who bring potential issues to us," Amazon said in a statement to the BBC.

Having cornered a large share in the Indian telecom and digital market through its investments in Reliance Jio Platforms, Facebook is now offering a helping hand to the business community.  They introduced a new feature on the platform that allows businesses to monetize online events in 20 countries including India starting today.

The Facebook Events feature, which has been designed for in-person events, has now been converted to support online events following a surge in live broadcasts on its pages since the Covid-19 induced lockdown, a senior company official has said.

A report published on TechCrunch quoted Fidji Simo, Head of Facebook App, to suggest that live broadcasts doubled in June compared to the same period last year.  In a blog post, Simo said users would be able to host larger events via Facebook Live while it is also testing the ability to host smaller and interactive sessions via Messenger Rooms.

"Today we’re launching the ability for businesses, creators, educators and media publishers to earn money from online events on Facebook. Now Page owners can create an online event, set a price, promote the event, collect payment and host the event, all in one place," Simo said in the post.

The official said that Facebook aims to support businesses and content creators by not collecting fees from paid online events for at least the next one year. "For any transactions on the web, and on Android in countries where we have rolled out Facebook Pay, small businesses will keep 100% of the revenue they generate from paid online events."

Readers would recall that Facebook has not been able to kickstart Facebook Pay in India and its efforts to have WhatsApp Pay is also stuck since six months. Early  in August, the company received a major boost when the Reserve Bank of India had virtually cleared all compliance issues related to data-localization. The matter is still pending approval from the Supreme Court, leading to a few sweaty palms.

Given this scenario, we are not sure how Facebook would manage the payments, if any or would continue to rely on external payment gateways to close deals.

While taking credit for the move to provide some relief to small businesses, Facebook did not forget to take potshots at Apple with whom they're having a running battle over the costs incurred as App Store tax. "We asked Apple to reduce its 30% App Store tax or allow us to offer Facebook Pay so we could absorb all costs for businesses struggling during COVID-19. Unfortunately, they dismissed both our requests and SMBs will only be paid 70% of their hard-earned revenue," Simo said.

This step by Facebook should be of great help to individuals and small groups that have lost business due to the lockdown and could convert these live sessions into paid ones.

Pantum P3302DW laser printer - $109.99 at Amazon
(roughly £85)
If you're after a replacement for the much-celebrated HP Laserjet P1102W, we've got the machine for you. This Pantum laser printer is among the cheapest on the market, but offers features usually reserved for much more expensive kit.View Deal

The HP P1102W was launched at the beginning of the last decade and remains, to this day, one of the most sought after HP printers ever. This LaserJet model was one of the first entry-level printers to incorporate wireless connectivity and was also one of the smallest laser printers at launch.

If your P1102W has given up the ghost or the cost of replacing its consumables is proving to be far too high, then consider giving the Pantum P3302DW a chance.

At $109.99 (roughly £85) from Amazon, this is a highly affordable machine and, while Pantum is not exactly a household name, the company has been around for nearly a decade (our sister publication reviewed its first printer, the P2000, in 2012).

The P3302DW also comes with a host of features not usually found in printers at this price point. It boasts a print speed of up to 35 pages per minute, auto-duplex printing, NFC touch-to-print, an LCD control panel, large paper tray, plus mobile device printing via a dedicated Pantum app.

The drum and toner cartridges are separate, which is good for your pocket, but not for the environment. The starter toner cartridge offers print capacity of 1,500 pages, while a straight slot-in replacement costs $43.99, which makes the 6,000-page extra high capacity toner cartridge ($99.99) a much better deal (that’s less than 1.7c per page).

Note, the printer is larger than the LaserJet Pro M15W and the likes, and doesn’t offer any compatible toner cartridges.

Bear in mind

  • If the Pantum P3302DW is unavailable in your region, you may need to use a specialist parcel forwarding service to take advantage of the deal.
  • If you've managed to get hold of a cheaper product with equivalent specifications, in stock and brand new, let us know and we'll tip our hat to you.
