Pornography websites are among the most well trafficked in the world, attracting an even greater number of visitors than household names such as Netflix, Amazon and Reddit, new research has found.

According to analysis from web hosting company Fasthosts, Xvideos and Pornhub are the two most popular adult entertainment websites, receiving an average of 3.14 and 2.85 trillion monthly visitors respectively.

The two pornography giants outrank Amazon (2.29 trillion), Netflix (2.21 trillion) and Reddit (1.34 trillion), highlighting the sheer scale of the modern pornography industry.

Porn traffic

According to Fasthosts, the top ten busiest websites in the world consist almost exclusively of search engines and social media sites. Google is by far the most popular, attracting 78.55 trillion visitors per month - more than twice as many as any other website.

YouTube takes second spot on the list with 29.27 trillion monthly visitors, followed by Facebook with 23.50 trillion. However, few would have guessed that pornography sites might feature so high up the rankings.

“Whilst our need for acquiring knowledge, connecting with others, and sharing information is a common motivation for our internet usage, there are other reasons we choose to hang out online,” noted Fasthosts.

“It seems people are bypassing the Netflix and heading straight for the chill.”

The company’s report is based on web traffic recorded between October 2019 and March 2020, but evidence suggests traffic to adult entertainment sites may have rocketed even higher in recent months.

According to the PornHub Insights blog, traffic to the website increased dramatically in mid-March, coinciding with the introduction of coronavirus lockdown measures across the globe.

At its peak on March 25, PornHub traffic was 23.1% higher than the usual average and remained between 10-20% above average throughout May (at which point the graph ends).

In theory, this means PornHub could have jumped from 10th position in the rankings up to 9th during lockdown, while XVideos may have shot as high as 7th place, provided other websites did not experience an equivalent uptick in traffic.

Pine64, a maker of Linux smartphones, has introduced its new PinePhone Convergence Package handset that can be used as a PC when plugged to an external display and a keyboard. The device costs just $199 and is aimed primarily at Linux enthusiasts.

The PinePhone Linux smartphone is based on the Alpine Linux-based PostmarketOS that can be used both in smartphone and desktop modes.

The smartphone mode works just like one comes to expect from a Linux-based handset, whereas the desktop mode currently acts like the second screen to the device, meaning there could be more features to come soon.

Entry-level smartphone as a desktop?

The internals of the PinePhone Convergence Package are pretty modest by today’s standards. The smartphone comes with a 5.95-inch display with a 1440x720 resolution and is powered by the Allwinner A64 SoC with four energy-efficient Arm Cortex-A53 cores and Mali-400MP2 GPU that is accompanied by 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of eMMC storage. The phone has a 5 MP main camera and a 2 MP selfie camera.

The main component that transforms the PinePhone into a PC-like device is its USB-C docking bar that features an HDMI display output, two USB Type-A connectors, and a 10/100Mb Ethernet port.

The idea of using a smartphone with an external display and keyboard to run certain applications has not gained much traction neither with HP’s Elite x3 Windows Phone 10 handset nor with Samsung’s smartphones with its DeX software.

Perhaps, since Linux community is generally more inclined to experiment with their gadgets (and their time), Pine64’s PinePhone Convergence has a better chance to be actually used as a desktop by its owners. Meanwhile, given moderate overall capabilities of the smartphone itself, it is hard to imagine that it will be generally successful as a product.

Acer Chromebook 315 - $199 from Walmart
(roughly £160)
At this price point, there's nothing about the Acer Chromebook 315 worth complaining about. This super-cheap laptop has plenty of power and storage for any standard business task you might need to perform.
View Deal

There’s not much that you can criticize about the Acer Chromebook 315 (otherwise known as the CB315-3H-C36A). It's listed in the professional section of Acer's website, and for good reason: it's a solid choice for businesses.

It's extremely cheap, at $199 (roughly £160) from Walmart, and also has plenty of storage and system memory: 4GB RAM and 64GB eMMC (plenty for Chrome OS).

Its entry-level Intel Celeron N4020 processor might be a bit underwhelming, but everything else - including the UHD Graphics 600 video controller - is more than adequate for any standard office task.

This Chromebook also boasts a 15.6-inch full HD display and a dedicated numeric keypad, which is always a plus.

In terms of connectivity and expansion capabilities, there’s plenty to like as well. The Chromebook 315 features a microSD card slot, Bluetooth 5.0, 802.11ac, and two USB Type-A ports.

It also has two USB Type-C ports, one of which supports DisplayPort over USB-C and charging, which means you can use a compatible Type-C portable battery charger

Acer claims its three-cell battery can last for a staggering 12.5 hours which, if true, is more than most business laptops out there. If your daily routine entails firing up Gmail, watching a bit of Youtube, messaging over Slack and editing a few Google Sheets, it'll certainly have you covered.

It's also worth considering the CB315-3HT-C6XF, a slightly more expensive version that comes with a touchscreen for only $229.

Bear in mind

  • This product does not ship to all regions, so non-US customers will likely need to use a specialist parcel forwarding service to take advantage of the deal.
  • If you've managed to find a cheaper product with equivalent specifications, in stock and brand new, let us know and we'll tip our hat to you.
