3. Logitech F310

The ultimate budget solution

If you’re in the market for the best PC controller that won’t break the bank, it’s tough to beat Logitech’s F310. It may be basic in its execution and functionality, but there’s something to be said about the no-frills nature of this cheap option. Just plug it in via USB and you’re ready to go. Considering the glut of customization options and features of all the premium controllers out there, the F310 is oddly refreshing. It also boasts an admirable directional pad and a great button layout.

As might be expected, the price point comes with a number of tradeoffs. First, the controller is rather lightweight, which lends an unfortunately flimsy quality to the experience of gaming with it. Also, with no wireless functionality, the cord interface may be less than ideal for some. It’s also a tad small and larger hands are likely to struggle a bit. Still, given these caveats, the F310 is a fine choice for an inexpensive alternative to a mouse and keyboard.

4. Sony DualShock 4

The motion controller

The DualShock 4 is Sony’s best controller to date, and lucky for us it’s compatible with Steam’s entire library of games. Very comfortable in the hands, the DualShock 4 boasts tactile analog sticks with just enough resistance, and perhaps the best directional pad ever. It also features motion technology that’s compatible with with a surprising number of games, allowing you to steer in racing games or aim in shooters by moving the controller around.

There are a couple issues, though. Most notably, the exposed shoulder buttons make it easy to accidentally bump them on the desk. The rubber on the analog sticks also tends to rub off after extended use. Still, Sony’s controller ranks up there among the best options for controller-based PC gaming.

The retro champ

Peripheral manufacturer 8BitDo has made its name on retro designs that lean heavily on nostalgia, and the SN30 Pro wears its inspiration on its sleeve. Modeled after old-school Super Nintendo controllers, it’s ideal for the PC’s ever-growing library of retro-inspired games, even if it doesn’t necessarily appeal to everyone. The button layout will be instantly familiar to anyone who grew up with 2D platformers and JRPGs.

The craftsmanship on the SN30 Pro is surprisingly sturdy, especially considering its budget pricing. It also sports a pair of analog sticks should you want to use it for modern shooters or action games, though we wouldn’t recommend that. Its small form factor makes it uncomfortable in the hand during extended sessions and more twitch-based games. Regardless, there are a number of games that would benefit from the authentically retro touch that the SN30 brings to the desk. That alone makes this one of the best PC controllers right now.

A more than decent camera setup is a critical requirement that users expect on a smartphone regardless of the price it sells. Of late, a lot of innovation has gone into improving the rear camera hardware and as a result, we have 64–megapixel sensors available in mid-range smartphones, a 108-megapixel sensor in flagship phones and last but not the least, the periscopic camera setup that offers creepy levels of hybrid zoom.

For people in the subcontinent, who click a lot of selfies, brands have ensured that this requirement is well taken care of. We've had devices with toting large camera sensors from the likes of Oppo and Vivo in the past.

Speaking of Vivo, the company has recently marked its re-entry into the “flagship” segment with the new Vivo X50 Pro after a brief sabbatical after the Vivo Nex that was launched in 2018. 

In terms of the camera module, the X50 Pro seems to have a combination of almost everything, a 32-megapixel selfie camera, a periscopic 8-megapixel telephoto lens with 5x optical zoom and up to 60x digital zoom, a 13-megapixel short telephoto, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide lens that can double as a macro shooter for those share-worthy macro shots of flowers in your home gardens, and a 48-megapixel f/1.6 custom primary shooter with a gimbal module.

Apart from the camera set up, the phone also ships with, for obvious reasons, a large 6.56-inch AMOLED panel with a curved display boating a 90 Hz of refresh rate, a large battery, 256 GB of storage along with 8 GB of RAM. 

Of course, there is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G processor that powers up the entire unit that is priced at Rs. 49,990.

Ahead of the competition

While the device does have a lot going for it in terms of a package, however, it is a tad tough to figure a Pro device costing a premium to offer a mid-level SoC. Readers may recall that apart from Nex, Vivo has not launched any other device with true flagship specifications in India. It not only had the Snapdragon 800 series SoC but also came with an innovative pop-up camera and in-display fingerprint sensor apart.

With its primary focus on camera and music, a tag that the company has thankfully moved away from, Vivo launches in India had a bias towards megapixel count rather than doing what some others have been doing – offering flagships at affordable prices. Furthermore, Vivo has been demanding a premium for these devices.

From a user’s perspective, this is slightly tricky since on the one side, you have smartphones that are offering more for the price paid and on the other hand, there is a brand offering a device at a small premium for an experience. Mind you this isn’t a brand like Apple or even Samsung that arrogantly demands a premium for the name or even OnePlus that has been able to create a niche by offering bang-for-the-buck devices with consistency levels that they can claim the big league.

The conundrum

While Vivo deserves credit for democratizing stuff like pop-up selfie cameras and an in-display fingerprint sensor that has changed the entire smartphone experience over the last few years. However, the company has been reticent to provide all of its innovations from back home in China to its Indian users.  

For Instance, the Nex 2 was a great follow up device to the original Nex and had a dual display and it worked like a charm rather than a gimmick. Sadly, the phone never made its way to India. Same is the story with Nex 3 that had a waterfall full-view display and pressure-sensitive keys rather than physical buttons.

With the phones that are launched in India, Vivo introduces some of these innovative features though often it leaves us with a “something missing” feeling. The reason they resist bringing the complete flagship phones to India could be the fact that Vivo knows that it has a very price-conscious user base in the country - one that prefers making a purchase decision at the brick and mortar store and may not be willing to pay a high price for an outright innovative product. Hence, it comes up with devices like the X50 Pro that offers good bits of the technology that it innovates back home.

To buy or not to buy?

The pricing of Vivo X50 Pro, however, may go against this logic and it is up to the users to decide if they want to spend a premium for a device that has the camera as its primary feature. Mind you, there is a Pixel device waiting to launch and we know what Pixel devices can offer with just one or at most two sensors.

To its credit, Vivo has indeed taken a bold step with a gorgeous looking X50 Pro and that gimbal stabilised sensor may allow steady images and videos. However, a good majority of its user base may prefer buying from an offline store or may not even know how to use a gimbal in the first place.

If the company is aiming at the  “more aware” online buyers, then we may not have to wait for long to see the feedback right from those that really matter.

Infinix, a popular budget smartphone market will be soon adding a battery centric device in India. The teaser page for the same is already live on Flipkart for the same.

The Infinix Smart 4 Plus will be the device that will be unveiled next week, The launch is slated for July 21 at 12 noon. The Flipkart landing page for the device reveals a couple of key features of the device.

For, smartphone will be the successor to the Infinix Smart 3 Plus which is priced at Rs 7,499 in India currently. The teaser on Flipkart says the Smart 4 Plus will have the biggest battery which hints towards a massive battery capacity. The Smart 3 Plus features 3,500mAh battery and we can expect Smart 4 Plus to come with 5,000mAh or even 6,000mAh battery.

The image of the device is also placed on the Fliapkrt page which reveals the rear camera. The Infinix Smart 4 Plus will dual rear camera with 13MP primary sensor with AI features and triple LED flash. On the front, it will come with a dew-drop style notch which also houses the front camera. 

The last-gen device housed an 8MP snapper. We expect the Smartt 4 Plus also to feature the same if not better optics at the front. Inffinix is also one of the few smartphone makers to pack in LED flash for the camera and that seems to be part of Smart 4 Plus as well. As one can see from the image, the device will come with dual LED flash at the front. Furthermore, the device will also come with a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner.

Apart from these features, we do not have much info on the device yet. The teaser says more specs will be revealed tomorrow (July 18).

Saying that we’re very happy with Dell’s XPS 13 is a huge understatement. At first glance, its slim profile and small frame don’t give away the powerful performance and gorgeous 13-inch display inside. Typically, you’d have to weigh up portability and performance, but the XPS 13 has managed to strike a fine balance between the two. Sporting Intel’s latest 10th-generation chips, much-improved battery life and barely-there bezels, the starting price of the newest iteration of the XPS 13 is a tempting proposition. We’re so chuffed with it that it’s still our favourite Ultrabook, and has taken the top spot as the best laptop overall.

There’s also the addition of Dolby Atmos speakers, cleverly built into the rotating hinge, so you’ll have superb sound whichever way you use it. The screen too is vibrant, though the graphics performance could leave some wanting. Still, with an 8th-generation chip, it’s a solid all-rounder for the 2-in-1 crowd.

It’s a Chromebook, which means it runs on Google’s Chrome OS and is ideal for those with a reliable internet connection who want a laptop to browse the web and complete coursework online. The battery life isn’t the best, but if you don’t mind keeping your charging cable with you during the day, it certainly offers excellent value for money.
