Over the years we've reviewed plenty of laptops, and as a result, we've seen what to avoid and what to jump on when there's savings to be had. We'll keep track of the prices of some of the best we've seen so that you can snatch up a bargain when they do show up. Dell XPS 13 2020

Our favourite overall laptop: Dell XPS 13 (2020)

Dell's latest Ultrabook is simply the best laptop in the world

CPU: 10th generation Intel Core i5 – i7 | Graphics: Intel Iris Plus | RAM: 8GB – 16GB | Screen: 13.3-inch FHD (1,920 x 1,080) – 4K (3,840 x 2,160) | Storage: 256GB – 2TB SSD

Gorgeous design
Excellent battery life
Lackluster audio
Expensive

Saying that we’re very happy with Dell’s XPS 13 is a huge understatement. At first glance, its slim profile and small frame don’t give away the powerful performance and gorgeous 13-inch display inside. Typically, you’d have to weigh up portability and performance, but the XPS 13 has managed to strike a fine balance between the two. Sporting Intel’s latest 10th-generation chips, much-improved battery life and barely-there bezels, the starting price of the newest iteration of the XPS 13 is a tempting proposition. We’re so chuffed with it that it’s still our favourite Ultrabook, and has taken the top spot as the best laptop overall.

Our favourite gaming laptop: Gigabyte Aero 15 OLED

The original designer's laptop gets an OLED upgrade

CPU: Intel Core i7 9750H | Graphics: Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 (8GB GDDR6; MaxQ) | RAM: 16GB | Screen: 15.6-inch, 4K (3,840 x 2,160), 60HZ, AMOLED, Gloss | Storage: 512GB SSD

4K HDR OLED screen
RTX GPU and 9th-gen CPU
Sleek with better thermal management
Reasonably priced
Max 60HZ refresh rate
Unfortunate webcam placement

It’s true, the Aero 15 range from Gigabyte is aimed at creatives. However, it’s also an attractive option for gamers – with powerful internals, a brilliant display and a sleek chassis – so we think it’s one of the best-value gaming machines Australians can get their hands on. The 2019 model boasts a 15-inch 4K HDR screen, which is ideal whether you’re looking to buy for high-resolution on-the-go gaming or its intended creative use. Under the hood it’s also got the option of the latest Nvidia RTX series GPUs and 9th-gen Intel Core CPUs.

Our favourite 2-in-1: Lenovo Yoga C930

A 2-in-1 laptop experience with little to no compromise

CPU: 8th-generation Intel Core i7-8550U | Graphics: Intel UHD Graphics 620 | RAM: 16GB | Screen: 13.9” UHD (3,840 x 2,160) IPS Glossy Multi-touch with Dolby Vision | Storage: 1 TB PCIe SSD | Connectivity: 802.11 AC (2 x 2) + Bluetooth 4.1 | Camera: 720p HD Camera

Strong build quality
Robust feature set
Excellent battery life
Weak graphics performance

This premium portable 2-in-1 has a lot to love: a strong build, excellent battery life and a robust feature set. It has a 360° hinge, so can easily be converted from a conventional clamshell to a handheld tablet. There’s also the addition of Dolby Atmos speakers, cleverly built into the rotating hinge, so you’ll have superb sound whichever way you use it. The screen too is vibrant, though the graphics performance could leave some wanting. Still, with an 8th-generation chip, it’s a solid all-rounder for the 2-in-1 crowd.

Acer Aspire 3

Our favourite student laptop: Acer Aspire 3 15-inch

A Chromebook for schoolwork, and then some

CPU: 10th-generation Intel Core i3-10110U | Graphics: Intel UHD Graphics | RAM: 4GB | Screen: 15.6-inch FHD (1,920 x 1,080; non-touch) | Storage: 128GB

Great value
Lightweight
Limited to Chrome OS

If you’re looking for a student laptop, chances are you’re shopping on a budget. If that’s the case, our go-to bang-for-buck pick is the Acer Aspire 3 15-inch laptop. It’s a Chromebook, which means it runs on Google’s Chrome OS and is ideal for those with a reliable internet connection who want a laptop to browse the web and complete coursework online. The battery life isn’t the best, but if you don’t mind keeping your charging cable with you during the day, it certainly offers excellent value for money.

MacBook Pro 16-inch

Our favourite Apple laptop: Apple MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019)

The best MacBook Pro ever

CPU: 9th-generation Intel Core i7 – i9 | Graphics: AMD Radeon Pro 5300M – Radeon Pro 5500M | RAM: 16GB – 64GB | Screen: 16-inch Retina display with True Tone | Storage: 512GB – 8TB SSD

Stunning 16-inch screen
New and improved keyboard
Expensive
Limited to four Thunderbolt 3 ports

If you’re firmly placed in the Apple ecosystem, or you’re a Windows user thinking about converting, then we think the 2019 version of the MacBook Pro is the best Mac you can buy. It has a generous 16-inch display, and while that may spell a bulky laptop for other brands on the market, Apple remains true to form with this svelte machine. It’s got the latest and greatest components under the hood, rounded out with high-quality speakers and a much better keyboard than older models.

Kuu K2 laptop - $299 at Gearbest (£237/AU$427)
This laptop from Kuu is equipped with 512GB of onboard storage and a quad-core Intel Celeron J4115 with Intel HD Graphics 600. It's also available at Gearbest for 40% off the retail price, so pick it up while you can!View Deal

We tested the Kuu K1 notebook not so long ago and were only mildly impressed, despite some promising signs - but now the manufacturer is now back with a new model: the K2.

It is currently on sale at Gearbest for only $299 (£237/AU$427), making it by far the cheapest new laptop worldwide with 512GB onboard storage.

Gone is the power hungry five-year-old Core i5-5257U, which has been replaced with the quad-core Intel Celeron J4115, reviewed in the Chuwi Larkbox.

This processor - which we predict will be one of the stealth hits of 2020 - is one of the K2's many highlights. It has four threads, a turbo frequency of up to 2.5GHz and an Intel HD Graphics 600 graphics video sub-system. Curiously, Intel hasn't listed it on its website yet (note: it might be down as the J4105).

There’s also a fingerprint sensor on the power button, a backlit keyboard (rimless and detachable for cleaning and replacement) and there’s even a dual-use touchpad which can be transformed into a numeric keypad simply by swiping to the right.

We like the webcam flap for added privacy, as well as the all-metal shell and aluminum alloy that keeps the laptop lightweight and cool, despite the lack of active fan - meaning this is an entirely silent laptop.

The rest of the specification is as follows: 512GB SATA M2. SSD, microSD card slot, audio connector, 8GB of DDR3 memory, 14-inch display with a 3:2 aspect ratio, Windows 10 Pro, up to 8-hours battery life, one HDMI connector, one audio jack and two USB 3.0 ports.

Bear in mind

  • If this product comes from mainland China, it will take at least a month to reach either the US or UK (and potentially more). You may be levied a tax either directly or through the courier.
  • If you've managed to get hold of a cheaper product with equivalent specifications, in stock and brand new, let us know and we'll tip our hat to you.

Latest Tech News

Along with his on-screen heroics as both Superman and The Witcher, impossibly handsome actor Henry Cavill is also considered a hero among gamers the world over, thanks to his unabashed enthusiasm for PC gaming.

Having already been quite vocal about his hobby during publicity for Netflix's The Witcher (a role he aggressively sought out thanks to his passion for the books and games), the Man of Steel has now taken to Instagram in a video that shows building him a new gaming rig from scratch.

Cheekily scored by Barry White's classic track 'Never, Never Gonna Give You Up' and adorned with a "viewer discretion is advised" warning, the super-cut is at once swoon-worthy and also refreshingly frank about what it's like for most people to build a gaming PC – that means a lot of staring into manuals and back-tracking on mistakes.

Given that Cavill himself is a beast of a man, it's perhaps no surprise that the muscular actor's new gaming-PC build is also something of a monster. Here's our PC hardware team's best guess at what he's using, based on what's made visible in the video:

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 3900X
  • Motherboard: Asus ROG Crosshair VIII Hero (Wi-Fi)
  • Memory: G.Skill Trident Z RGB 32GB DDR4-3600 CL16 (2 x 16GB)
  • Graphics card: Asus GeForce RTX 2080 Ti 11 GB ROG Strix Gaming OC
  • CPU cooler: NZXT Kraken Z73
  • Storage: Samsung 970 Pro 1TB SSDs x 2
  • PSU: Seasonic Prime TX-1000
  • Case: Fractal Design Define 7 case
  • Monitor: Asus PG279Q ROG Swift
  • Keyboard: Razer Huntsman Elite
  • Headset: Steelseries Arctis Pro Wireless

Want to build a gaming PC like Henry Cavill's? Here's an idea of what each of those costs, based on live pricing pulled from local retailers:

What would we have changed?

This is undeniably a premium, punchy rig that’s full of stellar parts and performance that’ll kick any modern PC game to the curb. But could it have been better? Our Aussie team put their collective heads together to assess Mr Cavill’s build – these are their quick back-of-a-napkin thoughts:

  • The motherboard features a built-in 802.11ax ‘Wi-Fi 6’ adapter with a theoretical maximum of 2402Mbps on the 5GHz band, and 574 on 2.4GHz. So we hope Henry has also invested in a compatible 802.11ax router to take full advantage of that. If he’s using wired networking, the Asus Crossfire VIII Hero features a speedy 2.5Gbps Ethernet port – so either way he’s going to see outstanding network performance.
  • Four PCIe SSDs is going to tie up a lot of PCIe lanes – a single 4TB or pair of 2TB SSDs would have been a more efficient approach. Each of those SSDs will consume four PCIe lanes for a total of 16. With a total of just 24 lanes to play with on the X570 chipset, plus another 16 via the Ryzen 3rd-gen CPU, that gives him 40 all up. His shiny 2080Ti is using another 16 of those lanes - leaving just 8 to spare, which may limit future upgrade potential.
  • Mr Cavill didn’t need to re-install the AIO CPU cooler to see the OLED display upright, as it can be flipped in software.
  • The Asus Crossfire VIII Hero has a reasonably good ESS ES9023P DAC, but for maximum audio fidelity we’d suggest installing an EVGA Nu Audio sound card, or the Sound Blaster AE-9.
  • Choosing 3600MHz memory is wise – that’s the Ryzen’s sweet spot, but the C16 timing is a bit of a let down. We recommend Henry consider a kit with latency as low as C14 or even less for a truly super system.
  • Henry’s choice of monitor is a no-compromise best-of-the-best Asus ROG PG27UQ, which packs in every conceivable tech, including G-Sync (nicely matching his Nvidia 2080 Ti), a 144Hz refresh, quantum dots for superior colours as well as HDR – and all running at a tasty 4K resolution, which the 2080 Ti should be able to power adequately. Well, unless he’s playing Witcher 3 at Ultra settings...
  • But that said, this Asus monitor was released back in 2018 and screen tech has moved on a bit since then. We’d suggest Henry consider the new Acer Predator X38, which also offers G-Sync and HDR but in an ultra-wide 3,840 x 1,600-pixel format, with a speedy 1ms response time (vs 4ms on the Asus) and a quicker refresh of 175Hz. Sure, it's pricey, but nobody ever said having the best PC gaming setup was cheap...

Aussie live sports is kicking it up a notch with the return of the 2019-20 season of the Hyundai A-League football. After months in hiatus, the remaining 32 matches are to be fought out in 39 days, 27 of which will be held in 28 days – a massive shot of adrenaline for football-starved Aussie fans.

Most of the games will be played in NSW, and reigning champions Sydney FC are back to defend their title. They’re already on top of the ladder but the team will have its work cut out for it.

And all the football you can take in is available to watch live and on-demand, including the finals to be held on August 15.

There’s a few ways to watch the Hyundai A-League this season – the ABC has become the official free-to-air partner of the competition, and will air only the Saturday 5pm AEST time slot live; all other matches, including the finals, will be delayed broadcasts.

However, if you don’t want to miss a single kick, you’ll need to stick with Kayo Sports – the sports-specific streaming service has the official broadcast rights to all the matches.

The rest of the A-League matches are also available on Telstra’s MyFootball Live app – a data-free service for Telstra customers while non-Telstra customers will need to shell out AU$6.99 a month for a Live Pass.

Front-row seats with Kayo

If you're planning on cheering on your favourite team from the comfort of your own couch, then Kayo Sports is the best option for you. You'll be able to watch every game live and on-demand, including the grand finals, and it will set you back just AU$25 a month after a free two-week trial period.

And A-League football isn't the only live sport you'll find on Kayo – you'll be able to watch all the AFL and NRL matches too, as well as all the F1 races.

The biggest advantage of Kayo is that it’s the most feature-packed sports streaming service there is. There’s plenty of viewing options, such as SplitView, which lets you watch up to four streams at the same time on selected devices.

The No Spoilers setting will keep the scores and results you care about hidden until you’re ready to watch, and Kayo Minis give you quick highlights of the games you’ve missed.

The basic AU$25/month Kayo package gets you access to two screens at once, and you’re able to cancel anytime as there are no lock-in contracts to keep you bound to the service.

Kayo Sports Basic package | 14-day free trial, then AU$25 per month

Kayo’s Basic package will let you live stream and catch up on over 50 sports on two devices at the same time. You’ll have access to Kayo’s features such as SplitView, and you can cancel any time as there’s no lock-in contract.View Deal

Kayo Sports Premium package | 14-day free trial, then AU$35 per month

For an extra AU$10 a month, you’ll be able to simultaneously stream sports on up to three devices. You’ll have access to the same features as the Basic package, and can cancel any time if you aren’t happy with the service.View Deal
