Google is teasing "something special" for Monday, July 13 – tomorrow, as we write this – which is very likely to be a new Google Nest speaker intended to replace the original Google Home that launched in 2016.

The tease comes via a silent four-second clip posted to Twitter on the Google Nest account, so it's definitely something new related to the smart home, whether that's hardware or software (or both).

Considering Google released an official promo shot of a new Google Nest speaker just a few days ago, we're almost certainly going to get more details about the product, and it may even go on sale tomorrow as well.

Google didn't supply any information alongside the promo image, but it's obviously a new Nest speaker, with the distinctive fabric covering and status LED lights we've seen on the smaller Google Nest Mini.

Previously leaked images showing the device going through the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulation process in the US gave us an earlier look at the speaker, with a mute switch clearly visible on the side.

We're expecting that the new Google Nest will offer better sound output than the Mini. A short video clip also released by Google in the last couple of days shows two of the new speakers set up in a stereo pair, though again the clip doesn't really tell us anything specific about the product.

If we do indeed get a new Google Nest speaker tomorrow, it would leave the bigger, more expensive Google Home Max as the only speaker with the 'Google Home' branding still attached.

We're hoping that Google might have some other smart home updates to share tomorrow as well, but we'll have to wait and see. If you're wondering, by the way, that's US comedian Fred Armisen in the promo clip.

Rumors suggest the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Note 20 will get an Ultra sibling, just like the Galaxy S20 had the Galaxy S20 Ultra as a super-charged version.

It's really likely the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra will end up being the biggest non-foldable Samsung phone around - the Note 10 Plus held that title until the S20 Ultra came along, and the gradual size creep of phones suggests the Note 20 Ultra could have a 7-inch or bigger screen.

Huge phones like that can be terrible for people with smaller hands, or those who like one-handed use. The 6.9-inch Galaxy S20 Ultra can be pretty hard to comfortably hold, so a 7-inch Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra could be really hard for some people to use. But there's a change Samsung should make to its device to mitigate that - give it a 21:9 display.

What is a 21:9 display?

The aspect ratio of a phone, or any screen, image or video, refers to the ratio of its length to its width. For example, a square picture would be 1:1, TV shows tend to be 16:9 or 18:9, and the Samsung Galaxy S20's screen is 20:9.

Older phones used to be 16:9, but recently most are 18:9, 19:9, 19.5:9 or 20:9, however, some like the Sony Xperia 1 II and Moto G 5G Plus are 21:9. This generally makes them longer and thinner than other devices.

A great perk to this is that 21:9 phones can have bigger screens without making the devices any wider - instead, they're longer, which doesn't affect how easy they are to hold in the hand as much as a width increase would.

21:9 is easy to hold

You can't use a Samsung Galaxy Note phone two-handed as easily as a Galaxy S or other device - you need one hand for the stylus, after all, and if the phone is too big to be easily held, it'll be a pain to use at all.

If Samsung embraced the 21:9 aspect ratio for its smartphones, they'd be able to have bigger screens without it inhibiting the way you use the device too much. 

Even if the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra had the same screen size as the Galaxy S20 Ultra, I'd like to see it with a 21:9 display. The Galaxy S20 Ultra had a 20:9 aspect ratio, but with a 6.9-inch display it was still pretty hard to hold in one hand. If the Note 20 had the same screen size but a 21:9 aspect ratio it would feel way better in the hand.

How easy a phone is to use is an often-overlooked part of the experience of a smartphone, with many focusing on the cameras and chipset instead, but that doesn't mean Samsung should ignore it.

The aforementioned Sony Xperia 1 II has a big screen, but because of the aspect ratio it's not too annoying to hold.

Similarly I recently tested the Oppo Find X2 Pro with a 6.78-inch screen, but because of its 20:9 aspect ratio (which is still narrower than most) it didn't feel too big for me. So it's clear having a longer display makes bigger screens a bit easier to use.

There are other perks too

Phone manufacturers didn't start using 21:9 aspect ratios to make phones easier to hold - that was just a side effect of the main reasons, and these reasons would really benefit the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra.

One reason is that many movies are in a 21:9 aspect ratio, so if you view them on a phone with a similar ratio screen there are no black bars at the top or bottom. Since the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra will likely have a high-res AMOLED screen, this would just be another way of improving the viewing experience.

Many mobile games like Fortnite and Call of Duty: Mobile are compatible with 21:9 displays too, so you can enjoy the game without your thumbs getting in the way as much.

Another benefit is that, on a 21:9 phone, you can easily dual-screen apps and still see enough of both. On a Galaxy Note phone this would be super useful, as they're generally aimed at business and productivity-minded buyers.

In many ways the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra would be a better phone if it had a 21:9 aspect ratio, and while we don't expect the company will actually use one (it hasn't on any other phone yet, and leaks point to it being 20:9), we'd still like to see Samsung consider it.

The perceived wisdom is that you should have antivirus software installed on your PC and an app of some kind on your mobile. Or that’s certainly been the case historically – if you don’t, the argument has always been that you’re running some major risks.

However, given advancements in operating systems and security in general, is this still true in 2020? Should you definitely be running antivirus software today? Or are there any good reasons why you might not want to?

Arguments against antivirus

The short answer to the titular question is: Yes, you should still be running some kind of antivirus software in 2020. It may even seem blatantly obvious to you that any PC user should be running an antivirus on Windows 10, but there are arguments against doing so. In some cases they’re not particularly valid ones, at least in our opinion, but they exist nonetheless.

One main pillar of the ‘anti-antivirus mindset’, as it were, is that if you’re sensible and careful enough about what you do online, only visiting legitimate websites, official software stores, and policing the links you click on with a suitable degree of vigilance, you probably won’t encounter any malware anyway.

And therefore the argument is you don’t need to pay for antivirus, and even if you install a third-party free antivirus app, it’s still another program on your system that might slow it down somewhat (some antivirus software can have more of an impact on system performance, and of course free software may also pop up ads and so on).

Another more pressing worry aired in recent times is that some of the antivirus software out there carries a number of vulnerabilities, and these could be a potential avenue of exploitation for an attacker. In other words, the potential irony is that your antivirus software could be an avenue for your machine to be compromised.

That’s a legitimate concern, as we’ve seen in recent times, when for example in March 2020, Avast disabled a major part of its antivirus software which suffered from a dangerous vulnerability that a respected security researcher flagged up.

So, as you can see, there are some gray areas when it comes to answering the question of whether you should run an antivirus. However, there are much stronger reasons as to why you should use an antivirus, which we’ll explore next.

Antivirus for the win

Clearly the most worrying issue raised in the above section is the final point, so it’s worth clarifying that the chances of your antivirus being used as an avenue of attack in some manner are pretty slim. In truth, there are far bigger targets for malicious actors to focus on than any given security app.

We’re talking about gaping holes in operating systems, and much more widely used software like web browsers, which will be far juicier propositions to exploit for hackers and other miscreants.

The thing is, it’s these major targets which are the real pay dirt for malware authors, and an antivirus can defend you against those far more dangerous threats. So really, the good that these apps are doing in that respect far outweighs any potential bad in terms of possible flaws within the security of the antivirus itself. It’s that simple – although also bear in mind that to minimize any risk at all, use one of the best apps out there which are pieces of software that benefit from being tightly and securely coded.

The final major reason why you should use an antivirus app is the dangerous nature of the threats out there these days, with, for example, nasty strains of ransomware threatening to lock away your entire digital life, or stealthy crypto-mining malware slowing down your PC while you may not even notice.

Is antivirus software necessary in 2020?

Yes, in a word.

In truth, there are no compelling reasons to go without antivirus protection today, even if there are some valid concerns about the security of some antivirus apps themselves. How to watch an F1 live stream in the UK

This year, there is next-to-no free live coverage of the F1 as Sky has nabbed the rights to Formula 1, meaning you'll be able to see it all via Sky Sports and its dedicated Sky Sports F1 channel. Subscribers also get to watch on the move using the Sky Go app , which is available on nearly all modern phones, tablets, laptops, PCs and consoles.

For those without Sky, the best option is to nab a Now TV Sky Sports Monthly Pass, which includes all 11 channels - and is great value at just £33.999 a month.  As well as F1 action, Sky also hosts live Premier League football, PGA Tour golf,  cricket, and much more.

Apple says that you shouldn’t use a camera cover with your MacBook webcam, at least not without removing it when closing the laptop, otherwise you run the risk of potentially damaging your screen.

The warning comes in an Apple support document, as spotted by MacRumors, and the issue would seem to be tied in with reports that have come in from some MacBook owners complaining that their screen has suffered from cracks.

MacRumors highlights users on its own forum, and Reddit, as examples of folks who have used a webcam cover of some kind that has caused the display to crack.

The reason damage could occur, Apple notes, is because the construction of its slim MacBooks doesn’t give much breathing room between the screen and the keyboard deck when the notebook is closed.

Apple explains: “If you close your Mac notebook with a camera cover installed, you might damage your display because the clearance between the display and keyboard is designed to very tight tolerances.”

Privacy issues

Why would you want to cover your webcam anyway? Some users do so for privacy reasons, not trusting that their camera might be hijacked in some manner (remember the famous cases of Mark Zuckerberg taping over his webcam, and indeed the director of the FBI).

However, Apple further explains that there is a green light to clearly show when your camera is active, if it has been hijacked.

Apple says: “The FaceTime HD camera built into your Mac computer is designed with your privacy in mind and uses a camera indicator light that glows green when the camera is active. So you will always know when the camera is on. The camera is engineered so that it can’t activate without the camera indicator light also turning on.”

Furthermore, Apple observes that covering the camera may prevent some of the laptop’s features from working as well, such as automatic brightness adjustment (via the ambient light sensor) and True Tone technology.

If you must use a webcam cover, Apple advises that it shouldn’t be thicker than a piece of printer paper (0.1mm), or if you do use a thicker cover, make sure that you remove it before closing the MacBook. Otherwise, you may run the risk of cracking the display. You also shouldn’t use anything that leaves an adhesive residue on your camera, for obvious reasons.

Many smartphones now support 5G, including both big names likes the Samsung Galaxy S20 range and OnePlus 8 Pro, and less mainstream options like the Xiaomi Mi 10, but the iPhone 11 range doesn’t. In fact, no current iPhone supports 5G.

So you might understandably be wondering whether the iPhone 12 will be Apple’s first 5G phone, and while nothing has been confirmed just yet, we have a good idea of the answer.

Below we’ll look at the relevant iPhone 12 rumors to give you an idea of how likely 5G is in the iPhone 12, and which models are most likely to support the speedy tech.

Will the iPhone 12 have 5G?

The short answer is that the iPhone 12 (or at least some models of it) will almost certainly support 5G. Aside from the fact that an iPhone with 5G is overdue given how many rival handsets have the tech, there are also a large number of rumors pointing in that direction.

In fact, we’ve been hearing from analysts and other sources that the iPhone 12 range will offer 5G as far back as 2019.

There’s been a large number of these claims, and since those early ones we’ve more recently seen iPhone 12 mock-ups that sport relocated SIM trays to allow room for 5G antennas, plus a claim from Jon Prosser (a leaker with a generally good track record) that all four iPhone 12 models will sport 5G.

Not only that, but there are no remotely recent rumors disputing these claims. Back in early 2019 there was some question over it, as Apple was entangled in legal battles with Qualcomm – the company that is now expected to supply the iPhone 12’s 5G modems.

However, that situation was resolved in April 2019, leaving a year and a half for the two companies to get 5G into the iPhone 12 range (which is likely to land in September) - which we’d think should be plenty of time.

Which iPhone 12 models will have 5G?

While we’re very confident that some iPhone 12 models will have 5G, there’s slightly more question over which ones will get it – but only slightly.

The bulk of leaks suggest that all four rumored iPhone 12 models will have 5G, those being the 5.4-inch iPhone 12, the 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Max, the 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Pro, and the 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max.

However, one source has suggested that the two cheapest iPhone 12 models (the 5.4-inch iPhone 12 and the 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Max) will also come in 4G versions, meaning you’d potentially be able to choose whether you want 5G or not, and pay less for a model without – this source claims that the 4G iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Max will cost $549 and $649 respectively, with the 5G versions being $100 more.

That would make the 4G handsets remarkably cheap for a numbered iPhone – cheaper even than the iPhone 11. That said, this source doesn’t have much of a track record yet, so we’d take this with a pinch of salt.

Also, even if they are right, it’s possible that some regions will only get one version or the other, so you might still not be able to choose whether to opt for 5G or not.

Will every 5G iPhone have the same 5G technology?

Not all 5G is the same, and it certainly doesn’t look like it will all be the same across different iPhone 12 models, as according to Jon Prosser the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Max will only support sub-6GHz 5G, while the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max would support both that and mmWave 5G.

The main difference between these is that mmWave is typically faster, so if this leak is accurate then you can expect better 5G performance from the ‘Pro’ models – but not everywhere, because some networks and regions only use one tech or the other, and sub-6GHz is more widely used.

So in places where there’s only sub-6GHz infrastructure, the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max won’t have an advantage, but in places where there’s only mmWave infrastructure, the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Max won’t even be able to connect to 5G, and in places where there’s both, the ‘Pro’ models will likely be faster.

This will be more of a factor in some places than others though. In the UK for example mmWave isn’t in use at the time of writing, so other than potential future proofing it shouldn’t matter which iPhone 12 model you opt for from that perspective.

But in the US, it is in use, and Verizon for example is heavily reliant on the tech, so the cheaper iPhone models might not support 5G on that network.
