Latest Tech News

For some time now Apple has been wooing India's growing smartphone users. This was evident from the manner in which the upcoming iOS14 tackled issues that mattered to Indian users. Now, it appears that Apple is all set to shift production of its iPhones to the region, which could potentially reduce iPhone costs too.

A report by Reuters claimed that Apple's manufacturing partner Foxconn could be investing up to $1 billion to expand its existing facility in southern India. And, this could just be the first step that Apple is taking to shift production base from China to other countries.

The move, which is of a scale that hasn't been attempted earlier, could also be a result of the ongoing trade war between Beijing and Washington, the report said. Ever since Covid-19 began in China causing Apple to shut down its manufacturing plants in Shenzhen, there have been regular reports that the company would soon be seeking newer pastures.

Capacity expansion could bring 6000 jobs

Foxconn operates a manufacturing unit at Sriperumbudur, which is about 50 kms west of Chennai on the eastern coast of India. The report quotes unnamed sources to claim that the investment of a billon dollars would be used to expand the capacity of this unit and would be completed within a three-year time frame.

Apple had shifted the assembly of its iPhone XR model completely to this unit and the report says that several other iPhone models, currently made by Foxconn out of its Shenzhen plant in China, would be shifted to India. When contacted, an official at Foxconn India refused to confirm or deny these reports but said the company had committed to expand its base in India five years ago. "Our commitment stands and towards this end we have been in talks with states and the federal government about expansion opportunities," the official said, on condition of anonymity.

The Reuters report said the expansion plans would bring 6,000 additional jobs at their Sriperumbudur facility. Foxconn also operates another plant in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh state where it manufactures smartphones under license from Xiaomi Corp and for some other Chinese brands.

Apple's commitment to India

Following the bloody border skirmish between Indian and Chinese armies in Ladakh, there were reports that the federal government was delaying shipments containing smartphone components for Foxconn. However, the company clarified that iPhone production at Sriperumbudur was back to normal and that there were no delays.

Apple CEO Tim Cook had spoken about opening their first Apple Store in India by 2021. He shared this information during the Annual Shareholders meeting in February. The company had leased around 25,000 square feet at Maker Maxity mall located at BKC in Mumbai for a three-storey flagship store. Officials had confirmed then that the store would be on par with Apple's prestigious stores in Hong Kong.

Off late, Apple has shown a renewed commitment to Indian customers by offering them customized versions of their entire range of computing devices. The configure-to-order and build-to-order options would be available for the MacBook Air (click to buy), Mac Mini, iMac and other computers.

Apple had also announced that its Apple HomePod, that was originally released in early 2018, would be sold in India. Of course, at Rs 19,000, the price factor could prove to be a dampener for customers.

You could buy the HomePods right here

iPhones could get cheaper

Currently, iPhones lead the premium market segment in India though from a sales point of view Apple only accounts for 1% of the sales in India, largely owing to higher prices caused by steep federal import duties. Once Apple shifts production to India, the cost of iPhones could drop sharply, bringing them on par with prices of other flagships.

There were reports last month of Apple negotiating with federal government to expand its base in India through the 'Make in India' initiative of the Narendra Modi administration. Reports had suggested that the iPhone maker was studying the feasibility of moving one-fifth of its total production out of China at an investment exceeding $40 billion over the next five years.

Given that the plant expansion is planned at the Sriperumbudur facility, Apple could also be considering India as an export hub for iPhones as transportation costs would come down drastically due to the plant's proximity to the Chennai port.

Apple also assembles some iPhone models through its deal with another Taiwanese enterprise Wistron Corp which has a unit operating out of Bengaluru. There have been reports of Wistron investing close to $165 million towards capacity expansion.

Minisforum S40 PC - $139.99 at Banggood (£110/AU$204)
This HDMI stick PC comes with an Intel Celeron N4000 processor, Intel UHD 600 graphics, 4GB of DDR4 RAM, 64GB of storage and Windows 10 Pro. It's also 54 percent off its regular price on Banggood right now. Pick it up while you can!View Deal

The Minisforum S40 PC is not your standard computer; it is one of the very few HDMI stick PCs that have recently appeared on the market and while we don’t necessarily embrace that form factor enthusiastically for a number of reasons, we do acknowledge that it has its uses especially in the B2B market where it can be used with digital signage, large format displays etc.

At 133 x 46mm for a weight of 300g, it is a far more compact way to transport a PC around; it is powered by an active fan which Minisforum claims is relatively quiet (only 30dB). It is powered by a 15W power supply unit that plugs via a Type-C port; you should be able to power it using a standard Type-C adaptor (like that of a recent smartphone) or even an emergency battery charger.

The dual-core Intel Celeron N4000 that powers the S40 is more powerful than the antiquated Atom X-series processors often found in rival stick PCs. Its average Geekbench scores - above 400 (single core) and 800 (multi-core) - beats the quad-core Z8750 easily in single-core and matches it in multi-core.

The rest of the specification includes a MiniDP output (which means that it can drive two 4K monitors), a microSD connector, two USB 3.0 ports, a Kensington lock, 4GB LPDDR4 system memory, 64GB eMMC storage, Windows 10, 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0. The vendor provided a miniDP-to-DP cable as well as a HDMI cable converter.

Apple TV Plus is now firmly in the second half of its first year in the streaming service market, and it's tough to figure out how it's doing. Despite Apple's investment in big, expensive programming with massive stars like The Morning Show, the platform doesn't compare to the likes of Netflix and Hulu right now. Clearly, though, Apple is prepared for the long haul, with loads planned for 2020 and beyond, including its expensive-looking adaptation of Isaac Asimov's Foundation.

The busy flow of Apple TV Plus shows hasn't ceased in 2020, either, with this year bringing the likes of Chris Evans drama Defending Jacob, and videogame-themed Mythic Quest from the It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia co-creators. The future of movies on the platform is exciting, too: Apple is backing a $150 million+ movie from Martin Scorsese starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro, according to reports.

At WWDC 2020, Apple confirmed the Apple TV app was coming to Sony and Vizio TVs this summer, too, allowing more people to access its content. Greyhound, starring Tom Hanks, is the latest big release on the service.

If you've picked up a new Apple device with a year's Apple TV Plus membership, or you're happy to sling another streamer a monthly fee to stay entertained in these days of social distancing, here we'll break down the Apple TV Plus price, the shows and movies available now, and what's on the way.

Apple TV Plus shows: what's coming up in 2020, including movies

Apple TV Plus shows are releasing at a regular pace throughout 2020. Here's what's coming up in the near-future for the service, as well as other projects that have been announced over the last few years. Check out the above trailer for Foundation, too, which Apple recently debuted at WWDC.

Apple TV Plus has plenty shows and movies coming up, a lot of them featuring big-name stars. Take the Scorsese-directed Killers of the Flower Moon, for instance, a 'large-scale Western' starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro.

In terms of upcoming shows that are worth knowing about, here are a few highlights. The Shrink Next Door is based on the 2019 podcast of the same name, and it'll star Will Ferrell and Paul Rudd. Foundation is a sci-fi series based on the books by Isaac Asimov, and starring Chernobyl's Jared Harris and Lee Pace. Severance, directed and produced by Ben Stiller, is a dark workplace thriller featuring Adam Scott from Parks and Recreation.

You can also expect second seasons in the future for existing Apple TV Plus shows like Mythic Quest, See, The Morning Show, For All Mankind, Truth Be Told, Home Before Dark, Little America, Dickinson, Servant and Trying.

Apple TV shows: TV series, movies and documentaries you can stream now

Wondering which Apple TV Plus shows are available to stream now? Check out this quick list of what's available to watch:

  • The Morning Show
  • See
  • Dickinson
  • For All Mankind
  • Helpsters
  • Snoopy in Space
  • Ghostwriter
  • Oprah's Book Club (factual)
  • The Elephant Queen
  • Servant
  • Truth Be Told (documentary)
  • Little America
  • Hala
  • Mythic Quest: Raven's Banquet
  • Visible: Out on Television (documentary)
  • Trying
  • Amazing Stories
  • Home
  • Home Before Dark
  • Beastie Boys Story (documentary)
  • Here We Are: Notes for Living on Planet Earth (documentary)
  • Oprah Talks Covid-19
  • Fraggle Rock: Rock On
  • The Banker (movie)
  • Central Park
  • Dear...
  • Dads

The shows on Apple TV Plus are hit and miss, but Mythic Quest is the best Apple TV Plus series yet. Fans of sitcoms, videogames, and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia will love Rob McElhenney's comedy about the fictional creators of a World of Warcraft-esque MMO. Some comedies take entire seasons to reach the characterization and humour Mythic Quest establishes in its opening episodes. As mentioned, season 2 is on the way.

On the weaker side is See, beautiful visuals - and we're not just talking about Jason Momoa, here - and expensive set design fail to hide a lack of character development in this near future where a virus has annihilated mankind, leaving its survivors blind.

Little America, however, is a diverse anthology of American immigrant stories, all wildly different in time and place, but each heartfelt tale is united by its restless humanity and desire for a better, less-divided world. Don't miss that, Hailee Steinfeld in Dickinson, and M. Night Shyamalan's uncanny horror, Servant.

You'll also want to check out Beastie Boys Story, a recent documentary about the band that's worth subscribing for alone.

Apple TV Plus cost: here's the price of the service

Apple TV Plus costs just $4.99 / £4.99 / AU$7.99 per month – and, if you buy an iPhone, iPad, Mac, or AppleTV, you'll get a year's subscription for free.

That's even cheaper than Netflix's cheapest subscription, which costs $9 (£5.99 / AU$9.99) per month, as well as cheaper than Disney Plus, which costs $6.99 / AU$8.99 (around £6) per month.

Apple TV Plus free trial: how to get one

Apple TV Plus has a seven-day free trial, and after that you'll be set to recurring billing for a monthly fee. It's easy to grab a trial. Just download Apple TV which contains all the Apple TV Plus content, and you'll be greeted with an ad for the service, as well as an invitation for a free trial.

The free trial gets you everything on the service in that seven days, so make the most of it. You only get one free trial for Apple TV Plus.

Apple TV Plus devices: here's where you can download the Apple TV app

Apple TV is available on iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. Make sure your firmware is updated so you can access it. The app is also available on Mac. It's also available on third-generation Apple TV devices, Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD. You can also download it on Samsung Smart TVs from 2018 onwards, Amazon Fire TV, LG Smart TVs and Roku devices.

It's coming to Vizio and Sony Smart TVs this summer, too.

You can watch the service in browsers for PC.

Is Apple TV Plus on Android?

There is no Android app for Apple TV, but you can watch it in a supported web browser on Android devices

Is Apple TV Plus on PS4?

No, Apple TV Plus is not on PS4 right now. The lack of Apple TV Plus on PS4, Xbox One and other games consoles is still an enormous oversight. Apple, though, will bring the app to more devices in the future, which will hopefully include games consoles.

What are Apple TV channels?

In addition to Apple TV Plus, Apple introduced Apple TV Channels, which combines cable subscription services and streaming services like Amazon Prime Video into the Apple TV app. (Unfortunately, however, Apple TV Channels doesn't incorporate Netflix.) Availability varies depending on where you are. Read more about Apple TV Plus channels here.

Apple TV Plus

So Apple TV Plus is like Netflix?

This is where things get a little confusing. While on stage, Tim Cook made it very clear that Apple TV Plus isn't like Netflix – at least not yet. While the service will offer original content by the boatload, Apple TV Plus doesn't offer licensed content like Netflix or Amazon Prime does, which covers all syndicated shows, like The Big Bang Theory, Mr. Robot or Seinfeld. That, though, may change in future based on a Bloomberg report which points towards more licensed shows and films coming to the service.

For now, you'll still have to buy those shows through iTunes or via your terrestrial cable app in Apple TV Channels and turn to Apple TV Plus for its library of originals.

The service really needs to be rolled out on more platforms, too, if Apple TV Plus wants a shot at taking on Netflix. For now, this suite of high-budget originals doesn't really compare. But Apple certainly has the money to mount a proper challenge against the king of streaming services in the long term.
