Phishing campaigns using emails are not new, but now there is a novel approach adopted by would-be threat actors. Playing on people’s fears and concerns about the Covid-19 pandemic, a sustained phishing campaign using subject lines such as, ‘WHO Covid-19 Situation Report’ has been deployed since May 12 this year.
Microsoft Security Intelligence Team has issued an alert about a phishing campaign using Covid-19 related email attachments.
According to the Intelligence Team, this campaign 'utilises hundreds of unique Excel files with highly obfuscated formulas’. However, all of them connect to the same URL to download the payload. NetSupport Manager is popular with threat actors who want to gain remote access to and run commands on compromised machines.
If the phishing attempt is successful, the threat actor will have total access to the user’s PC, files, and programs even if the device is running an effective anti-malware or antivirus software.
While some emails are supposedly from John Hopkins University, others, seemingly, offer Covid-19 testing services and information pertaining to the virus.
- Microsoft 365 login pages may hide phishing attack
- Cisco Webex phishing attack wants to steal your logins
- Best Windows 10 antivirus of 2020
- Empty list
- Empty list
Antivirus is not a safeguard against this attack
An Excel document entitled ‘WHO Covid-19 Situation Report’ is embedded with a code that stealthily installs the popular remote access tool, NetSupport Manager. When an unsuspecting user opens such a document, the threat actor gains control of the PC, including all files and programs.
In the process, other potentially harmful malware is also installed, which, thankfully, can be detected and dealt with by the antivirus software. As NetSupport Manager is an official program, antivirus software won’t take any action against it.
Firstly, users must read all the subject lines in their email carefully before opening them. Moreover, the person sending the email should be known to the user before opening the email which supposedly offers authoritative information about Covid-19.

Chinese multinational company Huawei has claimed a breakthrough in the 5G antenna technology that brings reduced radiation and power utilisation besides better quality integration between the base station and the antenna.
The company says that the new technology, called CableFree, is a breakthrough in mobile antenna design as it comes with the large cache of cables that existing towers possess. Additionally, it integrates a unique phase-shifter design that better integrates the unit with the base station, a prepared statement from Huawei says.
- How the Huawei AppGallery is being improved for India
- Huawei slams new sanctions restricting access to US smartphone chips
- Huawei confident of finding solutions to new US move to curb chip supplies soon
CableFree technology has already been used for a couple of Huawei devices including Huawei’s Munich Pro, Golden Mini, and London Pro series antennas, as well as 32T32R Massive MIMO products. This helps customers to quickly deploy high-quality 5G networks, says a prepared statement shared by Huawei.
The timing of this claim around low-radiation 5G antennas could be related to the events across Europe in mid-April when more than 70 cases of cell towers being set on fire were reported from Britain, the Netherlands, Ireland, Belgium and Cyprus. The issue caught the imagination of people facing lockdowns over the Covid-19 virus after some posts claiming a connection between 5G towers and the virus went viral.
Many of these posts over social media pushed a conspiracy theory claiming that 5G suppressed the immune system, thus making people more susceptible to the disease or that the virus was somehow transmitted using the latest telecom technology.
Scientists had come out rubbishing these claims with Dr. Simon Clarke, an associate professor of cellular microbiology at the University of Reading, telling BBC that the idea of 5G towers reducing immunity doesn't stand up to scrutiny.
Some of the benefits that Huawei claimed include:
- CableFree technology improves antenna radiation efficiency by approximately 20%, thereby also helping it increase coverage area.
- It improves the antenna power capacity by more than 80%. With this, it meets the greater output power requirements of the 5G era.
- Being of lower weight, the antenna is easier to install and avoids the use of cranes and other lifting equipment, thus simplifying the process and cutting costs
- It cuts down connecting joints and nuts and bolts by as much as 80% thus reducing passive intermodulation produces signal interference.
The Chinese company has been facing rough weather over its proximity to the regime in Beijing which has resulted in several governments either seeking to remove them as a tech partner for their mobile telephony infrastructure or wanting to cap the company's market share in the business.
The United States and Australia took a strong stand against the company and reports indicate that the United Kingdom may be following suit. The Trump administration has also included Huawei India along with its other foreign subsidiaries in its Entity List that bans them from doing business in the country.

That delayed Google Pixel 4a launch date may be just been further delayed, if a new set of rumors are true. And with that, Google is losing its hold on the mid-range market to the already-released iPhone SE 2020.
What a difference a year makes. Google put all mid-range smartphones on notice when it introduced the Google Pixel 3a in May 2019: the phone inherited the best parts of its flagship Google Pixel 3 at nearly half the cost. And, for almost a year, it reigned as the best cheap phone alternative to the priciest smartphones, thanks to the fact that it too took flagship-worth photos. Plus, as a Google Pixel phone, it was one of the first to the Android 10 update.
But now, with the anticipated Pixel 4a release date potentially slipping deeper into mid-2020, a value-focused contender has taken its place as the top mid-range phone for consumers who prefer long-time phone brands.
The iPhone SE 2020 is the most affordable smartphone Apple has released since the iPhone 8 hit the market in 2017, and while the SE was rumored to be in development for years, the new iPhone SE couldn’t have launched at a better time.
- iPhone SE 2020: our thoughts on the impressive yet affordable Apple phone
- Google Pixel 4a: all we know about the upcoming handset
- Best cheap phones: the top affordable handsets on the market today
Of course, iOS veterans been waiting for an affordable Apple handset to replace their aging iPhone 7, iPhone 6S, and heck, even original iPhone SE handset (which came out in 2016). But given all the belt-tightening following to the coronavirus outbreak’s impact on jobs and paychecks, affordability is likely even more appealing to consumers than ever.
So when the iPhone SE 2020 finally came out in April, several years after initial rumors estimated it might be released, we were expecting a big showdown between Google and Apple’s mid-range handsets. With the best iPhone chipset on the market – an A13 Bionic CPU, which is also found on the iPhone 11 – we were gearing up to see how the iPhone SE would size up against the Google Pixel 4a.
But every month without a Pixel 4a solidifies the iPhone SE 2020’s hold on the mid-range market. Simply by being available, Apple is winning over consumers who need an affordable phone now.
Of course, I’m not ignoring the OS divide, and those waiting for an affordable phone that's lining up to run the forthcoming Android 11 update likely won’t jump ship to the iPhone SE 2020 (which runs iOS 13.5 now and will eventually get the iOS 14 update). But delaying the Pixel 4a may not just lead to declining market share against other phones – pushing it later in 2020 could lead it to cannibalize sales from Google’s other big phone slated for 2020: the Google Pixel 5.
Collateral damage
The Google Pixel 3a was one of our favorite phones of 2019, but when the Google Pixel 4 was released with an even higher pricetag than its flagship predecessor, we wondered if the appeal for a new top-tier phone would crumble with a much more affordable Pixel on the market.
It’s a bit tough to measure how much the Pixel 3a may or may not have chipped away at sales of the Pixel 4. Back in February, Google remarked that the Pixel 3a sold well in Q4 2019, but didn’t say anything about Pixel 4 sales, as noted by Android Authority.
But here’s an informal survey of Android fans: among 9to5Mac readers running Pixel devices in Q1 2020, under 22% of them were using Pixel 4 phones, as compared to a similar survey the in Q1 2019 that found just under 40% of readers were using the then-latest Pixel 3 to surf their site. There are, of course, plenty of factors that could have influenced the disparity, but a big one was present in this year’s reading: 14.6% of readers were running a Pixel 3a series phone.
In other words, Google’s staying mum about how much the mid-range Pixel 3a cut into the Pixel 4’s sales, but we could see it happen again with the company’s phones in 2020. And if the Pixel 4a’s launch gets punted to later in 2020, it could come out closer to the Pixel 5 release, drawing an even more direct comparison between the two phones.
In the same set of Pixel 4a rumors that suggest it would be delayed, via a tweet from leaker Jon Prosser, it was revealed the Google Pixel 5 release could get pushed back, too. Given the fact that its predecessor came out in late October 2019, Google may need to release its new flagship in November or even December to give the cheaper Pixel 4a time to seed the market.
By then, of course, the Pixel 5 runs up against brand-new iPhone 12 models. Which closes the circle: a late-to-the-party Pixel 4a losing its slice of the mid-range pie to the iPhone SE 2020, and then a later Google flagship sharing announcement space with the leading Apple phone series. Google’s phone delays could cede territory to Apple in big ways this year.

Data of more than 29 million job seekers from India has been leaked on the dark web and the source of this data is not yet clear. US-based Cyber intelligence firm Cyble believes that it could be from one of the several resume aggregators in the country.
In a blog post, the cybersecurity company says the 2.3 GB zipped file was posted on a hacking forum by a threat actor carrying details of the job seekers' personal data from across different Indian states. The data was available for free.
Cyble says the source of the data leak is still unclear, though given the sheer volume and the details that it contains, the likelihood is that it could have originated from a resume aggregator. The company feels that all job sites that aggregate resumes should be checking for possible hackings.
- Ethical hacker claims data breach via Aarogya Setu app
- Indian Cyber security agency warns of email extortion fraud
- Online learning portal Unacademy hacked, data for sale on Dark Web
The company shared images of data from the zipped file to suggest that information has been obtained from different states. In fact, fresh leaks on the dark web suggested that things could be worse than they already are. Two more instances that came to light over the past 12 hours indicate that citizenship details from Aadhar Cards are also leaked.
Cyble founder Beenu Arora says these latest details may have come from two different sources as the details of the Aadhar Cards and data about 1.8 million residents of Madhya Pradesh appeared to originate from elsewhere.
“The original leak appears to be from a resume aggregator service collecting data from various known job portals. Cyble’s team is still investigating this further and will be updating their article as they bring more facts to the surface,” the blog post said.
The data shared during the original leak includes information related to email, phone, home address, work experience, academic qualification and more. Cyble researchers also claimed to have received a tip-off which suggested that the jobseeker data hack was a result of unprotected ElasticSearch, which is a tool that collects data from multiple locations in accordance with rules set by the person conducting it.
The data that got leaked in the initial instance has been indexed on the monitoring and notification platform of Cyble. The company says those concerned about the information leak can register on Amlbreached.com
