The best laptops of 2019:

What is it about the Dell XPS 13 that's kept it in pole position on our best laptop list for three years running? In short, it really is the PC response to the MacBook. The 2019 Dell XPS 13 hasn't improved too much over last year's already-great model, but there's some more juice in the battery and the camera has finally been put where it belongs – above the screen! The Dell XPS 13 rocks an 8th-generation Intel Core i5 or i7 processor and a bezel-less ‘Infinity Edge’ display, this Dell XPS 13 continues to be the most popular Windows laptop in the world. What’s more, there’s a wide range of customisation options, so you can really make the Dell XPS 13 the best laptop for your needs.

Our pick for the pinnacle of laptops you can buy in Australia for 2019 would be the Huawei MateBook 13, were it not for the ongoing issues the company faces. Like the MateBook X Pro before it, the MateBook 13 packs some of the latest components and tech into a nifty lightweight package at an affordable price. It's this deft balance that would give it the slight edge over the reigning champ, the Dell XPS 13, if it weren't for the unknown future of support for the device.

The HP Spectre line of Ultrabooks and 2-in-1 laptops has always consisted of extraordinarily attractive devices. So, when we say that the 2019 Spectre x360 takes things to another level, that should mean something. This is one of the most beautiful laptops on the market right now, with its gem cut design and sleek profile. Couple that with the powerful Intel Whiskey Lake processors and long battery life, and you get one of the best laptops on the market right now. Its ability to flip into a Windows tablet is just icing on the cake.

While the Aero 15 range from Gigabyte is aimed at designers, it makes for the best value gaming laptop on the Australian market right now due to its powerful internals, brilliant display, and sleek, stylish chassis. This year's model comes packing a new 15-inch 4K HDR screen ideal as a high-resolution on-the-go gaming monitor, media machine, or its intended design-centric use. Considering it's also packing the latest Nvidia RTX series GPUs and 9th-gen Intel Core CPUs.

While we are sad that the 15-inch MacBook Pro is no more, we’ve welcomed the MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019) with open arms. As thin, light and sleek as ever, you wouldn’t think this was a 16-inch behemoth. Yet, you’re getting that extra real estate on that stunning display, as well as the latest and greatest components behind it. This is, without a doubt, the best MacBook for content creators, designers and other creative professionals. With amazing (and loud) speakers and a much, much better keyboard to boot.

The new MSI GS65 Stealth has knocked our previous choice of the best gaming laptop, Asus ROG Zephyrus GX501, off this list, thanks to its excellent array of cutting edge components, which includes an 8th-generation Intel Core i7-8750H CPU and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 GPU. It's also more reasonably priced than the Zephyrus GX501, and its subtle design means that it can double as a work or study laptop without raising any eyebrows. If you're looking for a more affordable gaming laptop, however, check out the Dell Inspiron 15 7000 Gaming below.

With the third version of the Surface Laptop 3, Microsoft has made its best laptop yet. While it's not a huge leap over its predecessor, the Surface Laptop 3 does improve on almost every aspect.

Best of all, with the 15-inch version you now get a choice of either Intel or AMD hardware. Previously, only Intel tech was included. Elsewhere, the Surface Laptop 3 continues the Surface Laptop's reputation for being a stunningly designed laptop.

These are some of the most desirable laptops in the world that don't have a logo of an apple on them, with a new aluminum body that gives it a premium feel, while protecting it from knocks and drops. There are still a few niggles, like the continued lack of ports, but in general this is one of the best laptops in the world right now.

Last year’s Dell XPS 15 was already one of the best laptops you could buy, but now that Dell has taken the beautiful redesign of the Dell XPS 13 and applied it here – while also making it a convertible. Well, it’s amazing. Not only do you get one of the most aesthetically pleasing 15-inch laptops on the market, but it also packs one of those new Intel  Kaby Lake G-series CPUs featuring ‘discrete-class’ Radeon graphics. This means that this laptop packs serious power – even if it can get a little loud.

While the Alienware Area-51m (featured earlier in this best laptops list) is the best gaming laptop for people with a lot of money to spare, if you're on a tighter budget, then the Dell G5 15 5590 gaming laptop is a fantastic choice. Dell’s 15-inch G5 doesn't have the highest end specs, but it will see you through 1080p gaming and last you up to 10 hours of battery life as well – which is pretty remarkable for a gaming laptop. It also features a stylish design and great build quality, and Dell also allows you to configure the Dell G5 15 5590 to better suit your budget and needs.

With the Surface Book 2 (13.5-inch), Microsoft has crafted one of the most powerful 2-in-1 laptops in the world. The Surface Book 2 has some powerful enough components to handle most day-to-day tasks, and even some light gaming and video editing if you go for a model with a dedicated graphics card. Brilliant build quality and excellent battery life makes this a wonderful device for using as either a laptop, or as a powerful Windows 10 tablet. It also comes in a 15-inch version, which is more powerful and with a larger screen. If you're after a more affordable 2-in-1 device, then the Acer Switch 3, below, is well worth checking out.

The Alienware Area-51m is a strong contender for the best gaming laptop of 2019, and earns that place in other markets (such as the UK and US) due to its relative affordability. Down under, it's a little more expensive and doesn't quite earn that spot, but it's still absolutely worth considering (especially if it's on sale). With an eye catching design and brilliant build quality, which we've come to expect from Dell's Alienware brand, this is an incredible performer, offering a choice of some of the very best gaming components on the market right now, including 9th generation Intel Core processors and Nvidia's latest RTX range of GPUs. Sure, it's pretty expensive, but if you're serious about getting the best gaming laptop money can buy in 2019, then you'll need to expect to splash out a little bit, and the Alienware Area-51m really is worth every penny.

Which type of laptop is best for you?

General laptops: This broader category is dedicated to devices that focus more on practicality than style, portability or power. That’s not to say they can’t be fast, but you’ll typically find a non-Ultrabook clamshell laptop with an HD screen and spinning drive-based storage for less than $1,000.

Ultrabooks: Where you’ll find thin-and-light notebooks sporting SSD storage and display resolutions that exceed 1080p. Paired with powerful, albeit mobile-centric components and especially long battery life, the best Ultrabooks will cost a pretty penny – closer to $1,000 to $3,000.

2-in-1 laptops: Where notebooks that double as tablets are located. Outfitted with both detachable and 360-degree rotating hinges, these hybrids are the most versatile way to experience Windows 10 (or Chrome OS) on a touchscreen.

Chromebooks: Where you’ll find the best Chromebooks running Chrome OS. These do much of what Windows and macOS can in the browser, focused on cloud storage over local, while recently getting Android app support for touchscreen models. They generally cost less than $500.

Gaming laptops: Need a laptop to play games (almost) just like a shiny desktop PC can? Then you’ll want one of the best gaming laptops. These machines generally cost more than $1,000 and can quickly get into the $4 – 5,000 range for the beastlier models.

Reliance JioAirtel, and Vodafone-Idea have announced hikes on the regular tariff plans. The new plans come into effect for Airtel and Vodafone customers starting December 3, while Jio customers still have the chance to continue using the existing tariffs until December 6.

Both Airtel and Vodafone registered record quarterly loss at Rs 50,921 crore and Rs 28,450 crores, respectively, during the third quarter. And the revised tariff plans are a way for the telecom operators to ensure sustainability in the Indian market.

Since the commercial roll-out of Jio, Reliance has been single-handedly dominating the telecom space with its aggressively priced plans that pushed leading telcos to lower the prices of their tariff plans to one-up Jio. However, that didn't happen, and the companies are now in massive dues as Jio races close to 500 million subscriber base.

Reliance Jio revised tariff plans

Reliance Jio revealed its new All-in-One Tariff plans that the company earlier stated would provide "up to 300% more benefits" than other telcos. The company is offering its tariff plans with a validity of a month, 2-months, 3-months or 12-months. The new tariff plans will be effective starting from December 6.

The new All-in-One plans start from Rs 199 which offers 1.5GB data per day with 1000 minutes off-net calls (Jio to non-Jio) and is valid for 28 days. Earlier, this plan was priced at Rs 149.

The Rs 249 plan offers 2GB data/day with 1000 minutes off-net calls and a validity of 28 days, while the Rs 349 plan gives 3GB data per day and has the same FUP for non-Jio calls.

Jio is also offering two 2-month tariff plans starting at Rs 399 for 1.5GB data per day, 2000 minutes of off-net calls and a validity of 56 days. Previously, the same data and validity benefits were offered for Rs 333. Next, there's a tariff plan of Rs 444 which gives 2GB data per day to users with the same FUP on off-net calls and 56 days validity.

Jio's quarterly plans start from Rs 555 and offers 1.5GB data per day with 3000 minutes of off-net calls and 84 days validity. Before the hike, Jio offered a plan priced at Rs 444 with 2 GB data per day and 1000 minutes of off-net calls with the same validity.

The second plan with a validity of 84 days is priced at Rs 599 and offers 2GB data per day with 3000 minutes worth of off-net calls.

Jio also has an annual plan worth Rs 2,199 which provides 1.5GB data/day to users with 12000 minutes of off-net calls and validity of 365 days. Previously, the company's annual tariff plan was priced at Rs 1,776 and offered 2GB data per day with 4000 minutes of off-net calls and validity of 336 days.

While Jio has hiked its tariff prices, it is still a bit more affordable than the new Airtel and Vodafone plans. The revised Jio plans are priced 15-25% less than those of Airtel and Vodafone-Idea.

Additionally, with Jio, users get access to a complimentary suite of entertainment, storage and security apps such as JioTV, JioCinema, JioNews, JioCloud and more.

Airtel revised tariff plans

Airtel has released its revised tariff plans that will be applicable to users from December 3 across India. Moreover, the new plans come with additional Airtel Thanks benefits for customers.

Airtel's base tariffs start from Rs 19 with unlimited calling, 100 SMS and 150MB data. This plan remains unchanged and has been continued from the previous list of plans.

Moving on to Rs 49 plan, users will get a talk time of Rs 38.52 and 100MB data with a validity of 28 days. While the telecom operator cleverly lists the price increase per day as a minuscule 50 paise, this same plan was priced at Rs 35 earlier which is Rs 14 cheaper than the revised plan.

Similarly, Rs 65 plan that offered benefits worth Rs 130 talk time and 200 MB data for 28 days has been increased to Rs 79 and now comes with a talk time of Rs 63.95.

The Rs 129 plan which offered unlimited calls, 300 SMS and 2GB data with Airtel Xstream, Wynk, and Hello Tunes benefits has been revised to Rs 148 with a validity of 28 days.

Airtel has combined its Rs 169 and Rs 199 plans into a single Rs 248 plan with unlimited calls, 100 SMS and 1.5GB data per day. The company is also offering Airtel Xstream Premium, Wynk Music Subscription, Hello Tunes access, and Anti-virus protection as a part of Airtel Thanks benefits.

Airtel's Rs 249 plan which offered unlimited calls with 100 SMS and 2GB data/day has been revised to Rs 298 with Airtel Thanks benefits.

The Rs 448 plan with unlimited calls, 100 SMS and 1.5GB data per day has been increased to Rs 598 with a validity of 84 days and additional benefits. Likewise, the previous Rs 499 plan with unlimited calls, 100 SMS and 2 GB data per day has been revised to Rs 698 and now comes with Airtel Thanks benefits.

The annual plan of Rs 998 that offered unlimited calls, 3600 SMS and 12GB data has been revised to Rs 1498 with 24GB data and additional benefits. Similarly, the Rs 1,699 annual plan that offered unlimited calls, 100 SMS/day and 1.5GB data per day will now cost Rs 2,398 with a validity of 365 days.

Vodafone-Idea revised tariff plans

Following suit, Vodafone-Idea has also increased the prices of its existing tariff plans along with combo vouchers. Unlike Airtel, Vodafone-Idea doesn't offer additional benefits with its revised tariff plans.

The unlimited packs with a validity of 28 days and unlimited voice calls start at Rs 149 with 2GB data and 300 SMS, followed by Rs 249 plan, which offers 1.5GB data/day and 100 SMS per day. The plans which offer 2GB and 3GB data per day are priced at Rs 299 and Rs 399, respectively.

Vodafone's unlimited plans with 84 days validity and unlimited calling start at Rs 379 for 6GB data and 1000 SMS followed by Rs 599 plan, which offers 1.5GB data per day and Rs 699 plan giving 2GB data per day along with 100 SMS/day.

With the revised plans, Vodafone is offering two annual packs with 365 days validity. The first one is priced at Rs 1,499 and offers unlimited calls with 24GB data and 3,600 SMS followed by Rs 2,399 plan that gives 1.5GB data per day along with 100 SMS/day.

In case users run out of data, Vodafone-Idea offers combo vouchers of Rs 49 and Rs 79 with a talk time of Rs 38 and Rs 64, respectively.

Starting today, the client–server media library platform Plex has taken a huge step into streaming service territory, adding a massive and diverse selection of movies and TV shows to the libraries of every Plex user at no extra cost.

The ad-supported initiative has been rolled out globally, with available titles varying greatly depending on your region. While Plex users in the US now have access to classic films like Raging Bull, Apocalypse Now, The Terminator and Bloodsport, users in other territories may not be so lucky.

Thankfully, the service has announced that it will be adding more free movies over time, promising "Oscar-winning Hollywood movies" and "the latest from India, Russia, China, Japan, Africa, Latin America, Australia, New Zealand, and Europe", along with "really cool independent movies fresh off the festival circuit".

To access Plex's ad-supported content, simply launch the app and click on the new 'Movies & TV' tab in the side panel. From here, you'll get a very Netflix-esque set of genres and sub-categories, from 'Comedy' and 'Drama' to 'Awkward With Your Grandma' and 'Love Is In The Air'.

As with users' personal media libraries, Plex's own offerings aren't always correctly labeled or matched. In other words, a movie's title and description (a.k.a. metadata) may not reflect the actual movie that Plex has on file – as an example, we clicked on the 1984 slasher classic Silent Night, Deadly Night only for the 1972 film Silent Night, Bloody Night to start playing in its stead.

If you aren't an existing Plex user, you need only to sign up for a free account to receive instant access to the service's free library of movies and TV shows.
