Nintendo has told shareholders that it’s “investigating” advancing technologies such as 5G and cloud streaming but has explained that it won’t simply “chase trends” for the sake of it.
During the 79th Annual General Meeting for Shareholders, Nintendo representatives were asked directly about how the company will respond to recent advancements in VR, 5G and “alliances between rivals in the arena of cloud gaming”.
With the next generation of consoles from Sony and Microsoft being heavily rumoured to put a lot of focus on streaming and Google entering the streaming arena with its own Stadia later this year, there was some concern that Nintendo has been “a little slow” when it comes to keeping up with the competition.
Keeping up with the competition
However, just because Nintendo isn’t promoting any plans for these new technologies doesn’t mean it’s ignoring them entirely. In response to the question, Shigeru Miyamoto offered assurance that the company has been working on new technologies like 5G, VR and streaming “from the very beginning, and have been experimenting with them in a variety of ways”.
As far as cloud streaming is concerned, Miyamoto sees it becoming “more widespread in the future” but added that he has “no doubt that there will continue to be games that are fun because they are running locally and not on the cloud.”
These sentiments were echoed by Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa who said that while Nintendo can’t see all games becoming cloud games any time soon, it is aware that it “must keep up with such changes in the environment.”
Big buzzwords
It was Nintendo director and senior executive officer Ko Shiota who focused in directly on the latest buzzword: 5G.
“5G can send a large amount of data without latency. We are aware that this technology has been gaining a lot of attention, and Nintendo is also investigating it.”
However, Shiota added that Nintendo doesn’t “only chase trends in technology.”
As with VR and cloud streaming, Nintendo won’t be jumping straight onto a 5G bandwagon and will instead “think about both how the technology will be applied to gameplay and what new experiences and gameplay we can offer consumers as a result of that application.”
Not only that, cost will be a big consideration for pushing forward with 5G. According to Shiota “It’s difficult to use even an outstanding technology if the cost is too high, so we will continue to also thoroughly investigate the cost of new technologies.”
It’s already known that Nintendo has been experimenting with streaming cloud-based games on the Switch in Japan (via Kotaku) but doing so requires a high quality WiFi connection. 5G connections would certainly make streaming on the Switch a more portable experience, but it seems likely that Nintendo won’t pursue it further unless there is sufficient demand at the right price.
Given 5G has only just gone live in a handful of cities across the world and is still experiencing some teething problems, it seems safe to say that Nintendo still has some time to experiment further.

Google appears to be on a mission to improve the online media playback experience: not long after adding support for keyboard controls, it's now experimenting with a play button that appears on Chrome's toolbar.
As spotted by ZDNet, the idea is you can quickly stop and restart audio and video files playing in a tab, without having to hunt through the page itself. The feature is now live in the early Canary edition of the browser.
It's part of what Google is calling the Global Media Controls (GMC) package, as per Canary's code, and it should make life easier if you want to take a break from your computer or quickly silence something that's playing.
- Chrome experiments with ad blocking
- 5G speeds are slowing rolling out
- Don't forget your Google Chrome updates
Testing, testing
It would appear the playback button currently works with sites like Spotify, YouTube and Vimeo, though obviously it's early days for the feature, and Google's engineers are going to improve compatibility and reliability over time.
Quite how long it'll take for the button to make its way to the stable version of Chrome is difficult to say – but it shouldn't be too long before you're able to play and pause music and video from the browser button.
It's perhaps even more effective than the old mute button that used to appear on Chrome tabs, because in this case you don't need to spend time looking for the tab where the audio or video is playing.
While the feature is a little buggy at the moment, you can try it out for yourself by installing Canary and then enabling the "chrome://flags/#global-media-controls" flag (type that address into the browser's omnibox at the top of the screen).

Necessity is the mother of all inventions and has again proved true in the case of a Dubai-based start-up Fixerman.
“Fixerman is a one-stop shop for tech-related issues. What we are trying to do is solve problems for customers who have issues with gadgets such as mobile phones, tablets and laptops. The pain point we identified was the phones. The name was coined in such a way that eventually, we will fix all consumer electronics devices,” Jassim Bangara, CEO of Fixerman, told TechRadar Middle East.
Bangara said that he had a horrible experience in trying to fix his phone two years ago and that forced him to think about setting up the business. “We went into market research for more than a year to understand the market scale and scope and came out with startling discoveries,” he said.
Bangara’s research showed that apart from the lack of quality service providers in the market, the hand-held device [phone] is an important part of a person’s life.
Smartphone is more valuable than wallet
“It has proven that among your phone and the wallet, the phone is more valuable as you are more connected to it. If you lose your passport, you go to your consulate and the police take it seriously and there is a system for that. Same is the case for the wallet as the credit or debit cards are the most important.
“You call up your bank and the cards can be obtained. But in the case of a phone, there is no way to get it back if lost. There are ways to get it fixed, either from an authorised service centre or from an unauthorised service centre, but there is a huge turnaround time to get the device back,” he said.
Even though the job will get done, he said that almost 90% of the unauthorised service centres are using extremely poor quality parts.
“From our research, we found that there is a standard or best practice for hospitals, manufacturing sectors, etc. In the service sector, there are standards but most of them don’t follow the standards,” Bangara said.
Electro-static discharge-compliant van
Bangara claims that his service centres and the van with the built-in laboratory are the first to be electro-static discharge (ESD) compliant and the van is also the world’s first solar-powered mobile service unit.
When asked about his decision to launch a mobile business, he said that people are used to a certain level of convenience and to ease the pain of finding and going to the service centre.
“We provide three kinds of services – I will come to you with the van and fix it, I will take the device and fix it or customers can come to our open-kitchen concept studio at Business Bay,” he said.
Moreover, he said that Fixerman offers a two-year warranty on their fixes with OEM parts and three-month warranty for non-OEM parts. “All our technicians come with a minimum of two years training and five years of experience and also meets the standards of Apple Authorised Service Provider,” he said.
Ziad Bangara, Chief Marketing Officer at Fixerman, said that if a device is beyond repairable, it goes to recycling with the customer’s consent.
“More than 80% of the population doesn’t know that a device can be recycled. We go and pick up the non-repairable device for e-waste. E-waste is a global and pressing issue. On average, a person in the UAE creates 18 kilos of e-waste per year,” he said. The company has tied up with Dubai-based Emirates Environmental Group (EEG), a non-governmental professional working group, founded in 1991.
Fixerman has 12 business-to-business clients and more than 6,000 repeated customers under its belt. It mainly covers Dubai sometimes Sharjah and Ajman on a case by case.
“We do have plans to expand into other emirates and other GCC countries by 2020. We have raised AED 1m through private funds and seek to raise AED 2m for expansion,” Bangara said.
