Nikon may be axing some of its DSLRs but, if the rumor mills are to be believed, not all of them. One of the new models we can look forward to is a potential replacement for the three-year old Nikon D5.

We’ve been hearing whispers of the Nikon D6 for a while now, but nothing concrete. Yet, Nikon Rumors is suggesting that prototypes are already being tested so that the camera can be launched in early 2020.

If the D6 truly is a replacement for the D5, that timing would make sense, as the Japanese camera maker would be keen to offer sports photographers brand new kit to use at the 2020 Olympics to be held on Nikon’s home turf of Tokyo.

Let’s talk specs

According to Nikon Rumors, the D6 will feature a 24MP full-frame sensor, taking the resolution up a notch from the D5’s megapixel count of 20.8. 

Although the D5 can shoot 4K video, it does so at up to 30fps and, at launch, could only capture a maximum of three minutes per video. A firmware update later upped that to a max of 30 minutes per shoot. However, the D6 is rumored to be able to capture 4K at up to 60fps, but there is no word yet on whether there will be restrictions on the length of each video.

The D6 could also boast built-in sensor stabilization – which would be a welcome surprise – with longer manual exposure times of up to 120 seconds.

A second batch of specs unearthed by Nikon Rumors suggests the D6 will boast dual CFExpress/XQD memory card slots (like its predecessor), an electronic viewfinder with a possible magnification of 0.78x and 100% frame coverage, a 3.2 million dot rear LCD display (up from the D5’s 2.36 million dot screen) and built-in Wi-Fi connectivity.

With the possibility of new Expeed dual image processors for the D6, Nikon could improve the upcoming camera’s autofocus performance and silent shooting modes. With the addition of a 14fps burst speed, it could outperform the current D5 sports flagship in any arena.

The Z version

It’s important to keep in mind that everything about the Nikon D6 is still speculation, so there may be a possibility that a mirrorless version may surface instead of a DSLR. In a recent interview with a Japanese business newspaper, Nikon president Toshikazu Umatate mentioned that a mirrorless camera in line with the D5 was being developed.

There is also the exciting possibility that we may actually see both, a D6 DSLR and a top-end Z series mirrorless version as well – one that would compete with the Sony Alpha A9 which is currently the only full-frame mirrorless snapper targeted solely at sports and event photographers. 

And while that might seem like a long shot, Nikon has confirmed new Z series cameras will be joining its mirrorless line-up this year. We'll just have to wait and see how this all pans out.

After a shaky start, the rollout of the National Broadband Network (NBN) has been staying largely on track of late, and the most recent word from NBN Co claims that it’s reached more of its targets.

Specifically, NBN Co forecast that the number of premises that were ready to connect by FY19 would be 9.7 million, and the rollout achieved 9.93 million by this time. Similarly, the number of actual activations was forecast to be 5.5 million but managed to just scrape over this with 5.52 million.

The company attributes its goal-hitting to the momentum it gained in the last three months, where it managed to connect over 1.1 million premises.

It’s worth noting, however, that these targets were revised from much loftier goals. The Corporate Plan released in August 2018 lowered the targets considerably, after the previous plan initially forecast 6.9 million activated premises by FY19, and 11.2 million ready to connect.

For the company to maintain its goal of completing the network by 2020, it would need to get 1.77 million more premises ready to connect in the next year, and activate another 2.58 million.

While we don’t yet have all the details and granular information on the network’s rollout, NBN Co will be releasing its full end of year results on August 15.

New research from Dell has revealed that UK businesses are putting productivity at risk with poor workplace design.

Although common complaints like office temperature, noisy colleagues and unnecessary meetings took the top three spots in the company's survey, poorly designed or implemented technology is also having a negative impact on employees.

Out of date technology (29%), poor Wi-Fi (22%) and poorly integrated technology (19%) also made the list of the top ten factors impacting the productivity of UK office workers.

Failure to address these employee concerns will likely have far reaching consequences with almost three quarters of UK office workers (73%) stating that they would consider leaving an employer if they failed to provide a suitable workplace environment that inspires them to fulfill their role.

Improving office productivity

Dell's study of over 1,000 UK workers, conducted by market research organization Opinion Matters, also looked into what tools would help workers be more effective in the office with powerful desktop workstations (41%), high-end laptops (39%) and large interactive monitors (24%) being the most sought after by employees.

However, other tools such as virtual and augmented reality (11%) and digital project management tools such as Asana (10%) were less important to the survey's respondents.

When it comes to boosting creativity and collaboration in the workplace, having a diverse workforce was highlighted by nearly a third (29%) of UK office workers, alongside creativity training (25%), dedicated brainstorming areas (21%) and access to remote working technology (19%).

Senior director of the client services group at Dell EMEA, Neil Marshal explained why businesses should heed the advice from it study, saying:

“Our research suggests that the nation’s offices need an overhaul to improve employee wellbeing, happiness and ultimately, productivity. Businesses need to think carefully about the design of the workplace and specifically about how they integrate technology into employees’ workstations, breakout areas and meeting rooms. With clear evidence of the damming impact the wrong approach to technology can have, businesses can no longer afford for it to be an afterthought.“
