Quordle FAQs: Everything you need to know

What is Quordle?

Where Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day, Quordle presents you with four puzzles to solve. And rather than complete them in turn, you do so simultaneously. You get nine guesses, rather than the six for Wordle, but the rules are otherwise very similar.

It's played online via the Quordle website and you can also get to it via the Merriam-Webster site, after the dictionary purchased Quordle last year

As with Wordle, the answers are the same for every player each day, meaning that you're competing against the rest of the world. And also as with Wordle, the puzzle resets at midnight so you have a fresh challenge each day.

The website also includes a practice mode - which I definitely recommend using before attempting the game proper! - and there are daily stats including a streak count. You also get Quordle Achievements - specific badges for winning a game in a certain number of turns, playing lots of times, or guessing particularly hard words.

Oh, and it's difficult. Really difficult.

What are the Quordle rules?

The rules of Quordle are almost identical to those of Wordle.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray…

4. …BUT the word you guess appears in all quadrants of the puzzle at the same time, so an A could turn green in one square, yellow in another and gray in the final two.

5. Answers are never plural.

6. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

7. Each guess must be a valid word in Quordle's dictionary. You can't guess ABCDE, for instance.

8. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses and there is no equivalent of Wordle's Hard mode.

9. You have nine guesses to find the Quordle answers.

10. You must complete the daily Quordle before midnight in your timezone.

What is a good Quordle strategy?

Quordle needs to be approached in a different way to Wordle. With four puzzles to solve in nine guesses, you can't blindly throw letters at it and expect to win - you'll stand a far better chance if you think strategically.

That's the case in Wordle too, of course, but it's even more important in Quordle.

There are two key things to remember.

1. Use several starting words

Firstly, you won't want just a single starting word, but almost certainly two or three starting words.

The first of these should probably be one of the best Wordle starting words, because the same things that make them work well will apply here too. But after that, you should select another word or possibly two that use up lots more of the most common consonants and that include any remaining vowels.

For instance, I currently use STARE > DOILY > PUNCH. Between them, these three words use 15 of the 26 letters in the alphabet including all five vowels, Y, and nine of the most common consonants (S, T, R, D, L, P, N, C and H). There are plenty of other options - you might want to get an M, B, F or G in there instead of the H, maybe - but something like that should do the trick.

If all goes well, that will give you a good lead on what one or sometimes two of the answers might be. If not, well good luck!

2. Narrow things down

Secondly, if you're faced with a word where the answer might easily be one of several options - for instance -ATCH, where it could be MATCH, BATCH, LATCH, CATCH, WATCH, HATCH or PATCH - you'll definitely want to guess a word that would narrow down those options.

In Wordle, you can instead try several of those in succession and hope one is right, assuming you have enough guesses left. It's risky, but will sometimes work. Plus, it's the only option in Hard mode. But in Quordle, this will almost certainly result in a failure - you simply don't have enough guesses.

In the scenario above, CLAMP would be a great guess, as it could point the way to four of the seven words in one go.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration – or NASA, as it's more commonly known – wants to know why the millions of us obsessed with Starfield haven't applied to "be a NASA intern" yet.

In a viral update posted to Instagram, NASA shared a space-themed cat meme with the legend, "Watching you play Starfield after not applying to be a NASA intern".

The caption says: "NASA: We’ve got space at home" and then tries to translate our current fascination with the stars into a recruitment drive for the NASA specialists of the future.

"Spaceships - Check. Exoplanets - Check. Crews - Check. Missions - Check. Consider applying for our Summer 2024 internship session."

NASA made a Starfield post and it currently has over 4 million views from r/Starfield

With so many players engrossed in Starfield, it's perhaps unsurprising that the recruitment team wants to capitalize on our current fascination with the stars. And while some players found the promotion a little tasteless, most took it in good humor.

"Planets irl are even more barren, no thanks NASA!" said one player when the reel was shared on the Starfield subreddit

"The immersion of actual space exploration is so shite!" added another.

But the response I think most of us can relate to?

"I am totally unqualified and probably too old to start going down that road," admitted another one. "The game is the closest I'll ever get. Let me have my fun NASA."

TRG's Editor-in-Chief Jake reckons "Starfield is a technically solid systems-heavy role-playing game that works well with a surprising degree of polish compared to previous Bethesda RPGs," but added that "despite this, Starfield has no sense of character and the story lacks impact".

Awarding it 4 stars out of 5 in our Starfield review, we praised its "endless amount of things to explore", deep skill system, and excellent starship combat, but thought its middling ground combat, patchy writing and "soulless" feel held it back from a 5/5 score.

If you're still not sure, don't forget that you can try Starfield yourself for no extra cost if you subscribe to Xbox Game Pass

Last week we learned that Starfield includes a bittersweet tribute to a long-time fan who never got to play the game. App developer Alex Hay had been "following the [Starfield] project for years", but realized that the sci-fi adventure's final delay, announced earlier this year, likely meant he'd never get to play it as he'd been diagnosed with terminal lung cancer.

Whilst there was no public response from Bethesda, a fan who remembered Hay's post recently found a note from him within the game itself.

"To all my friends and fellow explorers," the note – which is entitled "Alex Hay's Note" – begins. "I'm always with you, out there in the starfield. Love always, Alex Hay."

The next Mass Effect game may move away from open-world exploration.

That's according to Windows Central's Jez Corden, who said in the latest edition of his podcast, The Xbox Two Podcast, that BioWare was looking to move away from Mass Effect Andromeda's open-world blueprint and pivot back to the franchise's signature "classic format".

In a discussion about Starfield and how Bethesda is both revered and jeered for sticking to what it knows best and following a particular blueprint, Corden reflected that in some cases – such as BioWare's Mass Effect series – long-time fans would like nothing more than to have the team go back to its roots… and it is, according to "industry rumor".

"I've heard that Mass Effect is ditching open world," Corden said, "and going back to its classic format. I don't know if that's accurate, 100 per cent, but it's an industry rumor."

As for what that "classic format" is? Well, whilst players could follow the story and side missions at their own pace, the trilogy's hub worlds gave the player a sense of freedom and agency but essentially kept them on a linear path. Andromeda deviated away from this somewhat and, depending upon who you speak to, it was just one of the many reasons Andromeda didn't live up to the acclaim of its predecessors.

Mass Effect Andromeda got a middling "Play It" from TechRadar when we reviewed it back in the day, but we praised its world, saying it was "huge, bigger than anything we’ve seen from Mass Effect before, and it’s beautiful too".

"The original Mass Effect had cinematic ambitions, right down to the film grain option in the graphics menu," Cat wrote in their feature, Mass Effect's queer love interests walked so today's LGBTQ+ characters could run.

"Perhaps the jewel in the cinematic crown, however, was Mass Effect’s attempt at a more sophisticated exploration of relationships and sexualities. Some of Mass Effect’s relationships seem strained, almost forced by the standards of 2023.

"However, for its time, BioWare’s exploration of this space offered something truly novel – especially when it came to queer, feminist experiences."

If you’re looking for a new game to get stuck into, look no further than our list of the best open-world games.

Donald Mustard – the man behind Fortnite and outgoing chief creative officer at Epic Games – is retiring after 25 years in the industry.

Mustard joined Epic back in 2008 after the studio he co-founded, Chair Entertainment, was acquired by Epic Games, and has since moved up through the ranks until he assumed the role of CCO in 2016, a year before Epic released the genre-defining Fortnite

"After an incredible adventure, I will be retiring from my role as Chief Creative Officer at Epic this month," Mustard announced via a heartfelt statement posted to social media.

"I have enjoyed nearly 25 years in the game industry collaborating with some of the most talented people ever, and I am so proud of what we have made together. From the ambitious Advent Rising to the start of ChAIR where we created Undertow, Shadow Complex, and the Infinity Blade trilogy, to the honor of our tiny team becoming part of Epic, each new chapter allowed me to accomplish something new and original."

Mustard continued to say that he is "especially proud" of helping "create and shape Fortnite," and says he's humbled to "have been a part of the team that every day tries to bring 'joy and delight' to the Fortnite community".

Mustard added. "I can’t wait to now share in the future of Fortnite as a player alongside all of you!

"The teams are in the best hands, and they are working on huge, jaw-dropping, amazing things!!! I’m excited to spend time with my wife and family and am forever grateful for [Epic boss] Tim Sweeney and the Epic Games family."

Fortnite Chapter 4 Season 4 is well underway and won't be ending for a little while yet. It added new Heist locations where players can pick up Mythic weapons and a host of new weapons and Reality Augments to get their hands on, not to mention a beefy fish skin.

Were you one of the million players who recently tried out Lies of P? According to the game's official X/Twitter account, over a million people have downloaded the Souls-like adventure across PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam. Lies of P’s official Twitter account also highlighted that the game – which is based upon the deeply unsettling Pinocchio story (tell me I'm not the only one who had nightmares from even the Disney version?) – hit the top three Twitter trends globally and reached 170,000 peak concurrent viewers on Twitch across all streamers checking out the game.

The Lies of P demo is sadly no longer available, but these are already some impressive stats for a new IP that isn’t launching until September 19. When it does, though, you’ll also be able to play the entire game on day one through Xbox Game Pass at no extra cost.

Lies of P will have you delving into a city plagued by chaos upon its launch on September 19 on PS4, PS5, PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. This twisted interpretation of Pinocchio will have you fighting your way through Krat while unearthing the grim reality of the tale we all know and love, challenging you all the while depicting hidden symbols and secrets around you to make sense of the fragile world.

Here's everything we know about Lies of P so far.

Lies of P remains one of the most anticipated upcoming games of 2023 - but what else is on the list?
