Kaspersky and WeChat have been banned from Canadian government devices due to security concerns - although both companies think other motives are at play.
This isn’t the first time both apps have been prohibited on the North American continent, as they were previously banned on US government devices too.
Kaspersky, a well-known antivirus software suite, and WeChat, an instant messaging service, are rumored to have connections to Russia and China respectively, hence the decision from yet another western power to throw them out of official circles.
“An unacceptable level of risk to privacy and security"
In a statement released by the Treasury Board of Canada, both applications "present an unacceptable level of risk to privacy and security," due to their potential affiliations with governments that may seek to compromise the security of Canada and its allies.
Both WeChat and Kaspersky responded to the ban by blaming geopolitical tensions and ideology as its basis, rather than due to any security concerns. Kaspersky issued a statement saying, "there has been no evidence or due process to otherwise justify these actions," adding that the decision is merely "a response to the geopolitical climate rather than a comprehensive evaluation of the integrity of Kaspersky’s products and services.”
Similarly, at a press briefing, WeChat spokesperson Wang Wenbin said, “we hope that the Canadian side will discard ideological prejudices, abide by the principles of market economy and provide a fair, just and non-discriminatory business environment for Chinese enterprises."
In 2017, Kaspersky was banned from use on government devices in the US due to concerns surrounding the antivirus manufacturers links to Moscow. It has also been “confirmed as malicious” by the European Union and was banned from use within its infrastructure in 2018.
The Canadian Treasury Board further stated that, "the decision to remove and block the WeChat and the Kaspersky applications was made to ensure that government of Canada networks and data remain secure and protected and are in line with the approach of our international partners."
Starting in November, Meta will offer Facebook and Instagram users in the EU, EEA, (European Economic Area,) and Switzerland the opportunity to remove all advertisements from the platforms via a new subscription plan.
There will be two different prices available at launch depending on where you purchase a plan. People will be charged €9.99 a month on desktop, while on mobile, the price tag is bumped up to €12.99 a month. The higher cost on smartphones supposedly takes into account all “the fees that Apple and Google charge” developers through their respective app stores, according to the announcement. The company goes on to say it will not collect or use information from a subscribed account for targeted ads. There is one small catch: users must be at least 18 years old. Otherwise, they can't pay for a plan.
One subscription will cover all linked profiles in a person’s Account Center until March 1, 2024. After that date, Meta will begin charging “for each additional account”. Desktop plans will see a €6 increase whereas mobile plans will jump up €8. If you do the math, you're looking at an annual cost of roughly €240 a year for an ad-free experience on a single profile.
Astronomically high price tag
The pricing deeply concerns us, because if we did our math correctly, the final cost will be astronomically high. Think about it.
Let's say you have a Facebook and Instagram account and you want an ad-free experience on both desktop and mobile. To our understanding, you'll need to buy four separate subscriptions to cover all your bases on the two devices. A subscription after March 1 is about €20. So yearly, a European user may have to pay nearly €1,000 to remove all ads across desktop and mobile – assuming they only have one of each. Remember: costs increase for every extra profile. Keep in mind these numbers aren’t exact. We are rounding up, but we’re not too far off from the actual prices.
We reached out to Meta for clarification on the pricing. The announcement's wording was a little confusing. We also asked if there are plans to extend the subscription service to other countries, namely the US and UK. This story will be updated at a later time.
Forced to comply
The company explains it's launching the service as a way “to comply with evolving European regulations”. For the past couple of years, Meta has faced a lot of scrutiny from the EU over how the conglomerate handles user data. It’s gotten to the point where the Union passed the Digital Services Act “outlawing certain manipulative advertising practices” as well as slapping Meta with a $1.3 billion fine.
Apparently, government regulators have ordered the company to give people a way to opt out of being bombarded with online ads. Meta claims the CJEU (Court of Justice of the European Union) recognizes the subscription model as a “valid form of consent”. It is good to see the company provide a way to skip the ads permanently.
Unfortunately, it's making the whole process painful to people’s wallets.

AMD will rely on advancements in high-bandwidth memory (HBM) in its bid to unseat Nvidia as the industry leader for making the components that power generative AI systems.
Building on the theme of processor-in-memory (PIM), Xilinx, which is owned by AMD, showcased its Virtex XCVU7P card, in which each FPGA had eight accelerator-in-memory (AiM) modules. The firm showcased this at OCP Summit 2023, alongside SK Hynix’s HBM3E memory unit, according to Serve the Home.
Essentially, by performing compute operations directly in memory, data won’t need to move between components on systems, meaning performance increases and the overall system becomes more energy efficient. Using PIM, with SK Hynix’s AiM, led to ten times shorter server latency, five times lower energy consumption, and half the costs in AI inference workloads.
The latest twist in the ongoing AI arms race
Nvidia and AMD make most of the best GPUs between them, and one may assume that efforts to improve the quality of these components are key to improving AI performance. But it’s actually by tinkering with the relationship between compute and memory do these firms see there are huge advantages to be made in power and efficiency.
Nvidia is also racing ahead with its own plans to incorporate HBM technology into its line of GPUs, including the A100, H100 and GH200, which are among the best graphics cards out there. It struck a deal with Samsung last month for incorporate its HBM3 memory technology into its GPUs, for example, and will likely extend this to include the new HBM3e units.
PIM has been something several companies have pursued in recent months. Samsung, for example, showcased its processing-near-memory (PNM) in September. The CXL-PNM module is a 512GB card with up to 1.1TB/s of bandwidth.
This follows a prototype for an HBM-PIM card, which was made in collaboration with AMD. The addition of such a card boosted performance by 2.6% while boosting energy efficiency by 2.7% against existing GPU accelerators.

Quordle is the only one of the many Wordle clones that I'm still playing now, around 18 months after the daily-word-game craze hit the internet, and with good reason: it's fun, but also difficult.
What's more, its makers (now the online dictionary Merriam-Webster) are also keeping it fresh in the form of a variant called the Daily Sequence, which sees you complete four puzzles consecutively, rather than concurrently.
But Quordle is tough, so if you already find yourself searching for Wordle hints, you'll probably need some for this game too.

Where Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day, Quordle presents you with four puzzles to solve. And rather than complete them in turn, you do so simultaneously. You get nine guesses, rather than the six for Wordle, but the rules are otherwise very similar.
As with Wordle, the answers are the same for every player each day, meaning that you're competing against the rest of the world. And also as with Wordle, the puzzle resets at midnight so you have a fresh challenge each day.
The website also includes a practice mode - which I definitely recommend using before attempting the game proper! - and there are daily stats including a streak count. You also get Quordle Achievements - specific badges for winning a game in a certain number of turns, playing lots of times, or guessing particularly hard words.
Oh, and it's difficult. Really difficult.
What are the Quordle rules?
The rules of Quordle are almost identical to those of Wordle.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray…
4. …BUT the word you guess appears in all quadrants of the puzzle at the same time, so an A could turn green in one square, yellow in another and gray in the final two.
5. Answers are never plural.
6. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
7. Each guess must be a valid word in Quordle's dictionary. You can't guess ABCDE, for instance.
8. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses and there is no equivalent of Wordle's Hard mode.
9. You have nine guesses to find the Quordle answers.
10. You must complete the daily Quordle before midnight in your timezone.
What is a good Quordle strategy?
Quordle needs to be approached in a different way to Wordle. With four puzzles to solve in nine guesses, you can't blindly throw letters at it and expect to win - you'll stand a far better chance if you think strategically.
That's the case in Wordle too, of course, but it's even more important in Quordle.
There are two key things to remember.
1. Use several starting words
Firstly, you won't want just a single starting word, but almost certainly two or three starting words.
The first of these should probably be one of the best Wordle starting words, because the same things that make them work well will apply here too. But after that, you should select another word or possibly two that use up lots more of the most common consonants and that include any remaining vowels.
For instance, I currently use STARE > DOILY > PUNCH. Between them, these three words use 15 of the 26 letters in the alphabet including all five vowels, Y, and nine of the most common consonants (S, T, R, D, L, P, N, C and H). There are plenty of other options - you might want to get an M, B, F or G in there instead of the H, maybe - but something like that should do the trick.
If all goes well, that will give you a good lead on what one or sometimes two of the answers might be. If not, well good luck!
2. Narrow things down
Secondly, if you're faced with a word where the answer might easily be one of several options - for instance -ATCH, where it could be MATCH, BATCH, LATCH, CATCH, WATCH, HATCH or PATCH - you'll definitely want to guess a word that would narrow down those options.
In Wordle, you can instead try several of those in succession and hope one is right, assuming you have enough guesses left. It's risky, but will sometimes work. Plus, it's the only option in Hard mode. But in Quordle, this will almost certainly result in a failure - you simply don't have enough guesses.
In the scenario above, CLAMP would be a great guess, as it could point the way to four of the seven words in one go.

Samsung unveiled a slew of memory products and technologies this week that caught TechRadar Pro’s eye, ranging from the new HBME3 Shinebolt memory technology to the possibility of a petabyte SSD (PBSSD). But it’s the throwaway reference to a BM9C1 SSD that’s among the most compelling.
Described as a high-capacity quad-level cell (QLC) SSD, the BM9C1 unit may well be an expansion in Samsung’s QLC SSD series of QVO SSDs.
The latest edition is the 870 QVO SATA 2.5-inch SSD, which is known to be among the cheapest high-capacity SSDs. The largest capacity currently in production is 8TB and retails for $330 right now on Amazon. The BM9C1 may be a device that extends the maximum storage capacity from 8TB to 16TB, for instance, or it can be a successor to this device in the form of the long-awaited 880 QVO, which hasn’t yet been announced formally.
Should we expect a Samsung 880 QVO SSD?
QLC SSDs are optimized to have as high a capacity as possible and deliver a dollar-per-TB value that can rival the best hard drives, or even prove to be cheaper than them. They store four bits per cell, which delivers NVMe performance in higher capacities.
The 2TB Samsung 870 QVO, for example, reached speeds of 561MBps reads and 530MBps writes when tested. It’s no slouch but is roughly half the speeds of the fastest SSDs currently available on the market.
Samsung’s reference to a new QLC SSD in the form of the BM9C1 chimes with global import data from Volza, which suggests this model is being shipped around the world right now, especially South Korea and India.
These 1TB units are being shipped for R&D evaluation – not for sale – meaning this is a technology currently being worked on and it remains to be seen when they’ll enter mainstream production.
The latest model, the 870 QVO, was launched in June 2020, with its predecessor, the 860 QVO SSD launching in 2018. This means Samsung is overdue an upgrade in this line of SSDs, and it may well have hinted that one is on its way.
Intel is hoping to launch an ecosystem of 100 million PCs loaded with AI capabilities thanks to its new Intel Core Ultra CPUs coupled with a newly announced AI acceleration program.
The chipmaking giant has partnered with hardware and software vendors including Adobe, Webex and Zoom to maximize the potential of the Intel Core Ultra chips, announced in September. These will be the first chip released in the consumer market with dedicated neural processing units (NPUs) built in.
The AI acceleration program will see Intel connect hardware and software vendors with a package of Intel resources including AI toolchains, co-engineering, hardware design resources, technical expertise, and co-marketing opportunities.
Intel is bringing AI to the consumer market
“Intel recognizes that software leadership is key to the AI PC experience, and we’re uniquely positioned to lead the industry with an open ecosystem approach,” said Michelle Johnston Holthaus, executive VP and GM of the Client Computing Group at Intel. “
With a long history in AI development and a deep network of ISV engineering relationships, Intel will take an active role in fostering connections and innovations that propel new use cases and experiences on the PC.”
Intel’s Core Ultra chips – codenamed Meteor Lake – will launch in December and feature a multi-chiplet module (MCM) design. This is a major design shift for the firm, and represents the first step in bringing AI to the computing masses.
The aim of this program is to boost the rate of AI development across the computing industry, by increasing the availability of software boosted by AI and machine learning.
People will, with time, have the tools to improve efficiency and be more creative with AI, thanks to the PCs of tomorrow. These devices will be fitted with the best CPUs, best GPUs and, now, NPUs to optimize performance and deliver power efficiency to run AI software.
Software companies will have access to Intel’s engineering talent to optimize their programs with tools such as OpenVINO, the open source toolkit for optimizing and deploying AI inference. The software that partners write spans audio effects, content creation, gaming, security, streaming, video collaboration, and others.
There’s a new champion in the race to get the best score on the industry standard Cinebench R23 test, with the AMD EPYC 9654 processor hitting world record of 147,668.
This record was achieved by coupling together two AMD EPYC 9654 CPUs to achieve a 192-core configuration with 384 threads and overclocking the processors to 3.7GHz. The score is also roughly 15,000 points higher than the Intel Xeon W903495X 56-core workstation processor, the previous record-holder.
This AMD processor is among the best CPUs out there, and the result was achieved with two running in parallel with simultaneous multi-threading (SMT) disabled, as well as custom liquid cooling so the cores never hit temperatures above 65-degrees C. They were also protected by cardboard, according to daveReconRF, who ran the test. This, the user said, will be replaced eventually by 3D-printed shrouds.
Why AMD stealing back the crown matters
Priced at $11,800, the AMD EPYC 9654 has a base clock speed of 2.4GHz with a max boost of 3.7Ghz. It also has an L3 Cache of 384MB and offers PCIe 5.0 connectivity with 12 memory channels and support for DDR5 RAM.
Cinebench R23, meanwhile, is a key visual rendering benchmark that divides in image into fragments each drawn on the screen sequentially. The better the processor, the quicker the image can be rendered, which corresponds with a higher score.
AMD Threadripper CPUs have long dominated the benchmark, especially the 3995X and 5995X processors setting record scores in years gone by. But the Intel Xeon W9-3495X beat the AMD Threadripper 5995WX earlier this year, with a score of 132,484 versus 121,215.
Intel’s reign, however, as the world champion in this particular metric has been short lived, with an AMD processor once again setting a new standard in the Cinebench R23 test. There’s every chance its latest 96-core AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro 7995WX chip for workstations could also stake a good claim to score highly in the Cinebench R23 test.
