Mortal Kombat 1 creator Ed Boon has teased that we may soon be welcoming a whole new raft of frighteningly new fighters to the roster.

In a post on Twitter/X, Boon posted an image that contained some of horror's most iconic mascots, including Leatherface, Freddy, Michael Myers, Jason, Pinhead, Jigsaw, and Chucky. All the horror icons had either a tick or a question mark above their heads.

Perhaps most interesting of all, however, was the inclusion of Scream's Ghostface, which adds some credence to rumors that voice lines pertaining to Ghostface popped up in a datamine not too long ago (thanks, Eurogamer).

Mortal Kombat 1 reportedly has a bug that could potentially impact every character in the game, giving an advantage to whoever happens to be player one.

Mortal Kombat 1 player and YouTuber mrAPchem discovered an issue in the fighting game that allows player one to execute certain combos during fights that can't be executed by player two.

NetherRealm has confirmed that the issue is currently under investigation.

The Pokémon Company says it is "actively working on ways" to restock its Pokémon x Van Gogh Museum collection after scalpers promptly cleaned out the limited edition items.

Citing "overwhelming demand", the company apologized for disappointing fans who had missed out and said it would let them know about restock options "at a later day".

"We apologize for all the fans eagerly awaiting our Pokémon Center x Van Gogh Museum release today," the company said across its social media channels.

"Due to overwhelming demand, all our products from this collection have sold out. We understand this is disappointing to many who were looking to our official email and social media channels for guidance on how and when to purchase.

"We are actively working on ways to provide more Pikachu with Grey Felt Hat promo cards for fans shopping at Pokémon Center in the future. Details will be released at a later date."

The statement is not enough to assuage the disappointment for some, however, not least because dozens of the free promo cards some purchasers received are already on eBay, asking hundreds of dollars for what was a pro bono item.

The Pokémon Company didn't say when it hoped to restock the promotional items, only that it would release more details "at a later date".

On the subject of card games – did you know that a Toronto retail worker sold a rare Magic: The Gathering card to musician Post Malone for $2 million?

Brook Trafton – who realized his "childhood dream" when he discovered the rare card earlier this year – parted with his prized collectable after what he'd thought was a standard meet and greet with Post Malone turned into an "unexpected" sale.

After hiring a lawyer and a public relations firm, Trafton was contacted by representatives of Post Malone who said he wanted to meet him and see the card for himself.

"He's like: 'Yes, I will take this card'. It was so magical. I'm not going to lie. I cried a little bit. I cried a lot."

As for what's so special about this particular card? Hailing from Magic: The Gathering's Lord of the Rings set, the "One Ring" card is completely one-of-a-kind, making it one of the game's rarest finds, particularly as it was discovered in perfect mint condition, too.

Google’s next Pixel event is less than a week away, and yet new details about the device keep leaking. This time, we’ve learned that the wearable will be gaining the Body Responses feature seen previously on the Fitbit Sense 2.

This batch of information comes from industry insider Evan Blass on X (the platform formerly known as Twitter). The watch face will display how your body reacts to stress at certain times of the day, according to the images he posted. Each time period will be accentuated with an emoji making a face befitting the mood. For example, a user might feel particularly stressed out at 11 am, feel fine at noon, then feel a little off at 1 pm. 9To5Google points out this is better than what the Fitbit Sense 2 has because the user interface is cleaner than before and a lot “easier to understand at a glance.”

What’s particularly interesting is this indicates the Pixel Watch 2 may have an “electrodermal activity sensor”, EDA for short, which is something the original model doesn’t have. This technology works by measuring certain factors like the amount of sweat produced when stressed and the temperature of your skin.

And as you can see in the post above, you can replace the plastic band with a fancy-looking metallic one for that extra pizazz.

The last picture Blass posted is of the “new interface for Fitbit workouts”. The UI has a heart rate meter on the side made up of segmented pieces. A “target zone” indicating where your heart rate should be at will be highlighted. Next to the meter is a more detailed read out displaying the BPM (beats per minute) plus how long you’ve spent in the target zone.

There is seemingly more to the interface because there are pagination dots at the bottom, but this single screen is all we see. Fortunately, there are clues. Another 9to5Google report claims the UI will have “Pace Training” on the screen as well as “automatic start and stop reminders for workouts”.

Colorful array

In addition to the feature leak, German tech news site WinFuture had its own showcasing four colors the Pixel Watch 2 may come in. Official names for these shades aren't given, but just by looking at them, we can see the wearable will be available in black, white, gray, and a baby blue. It's unknown if the metallic band mentioned earlier will have its own set of colors.

Of course, take these leaks with a grain of salt. Things can always change at the last minute. Either way, we won’t have to wait long as the Pixel event will be held on October 4.

Elon Musk has made drastic cuts to the 'election integrity team' at X (formerly Twitter), a department that was responsible for combating the spread of misinformation online, and also scrapped a feature that lets users self-report false political statements.

The announcement was made just weeks after the platform said it had plans to expand its safety teams, ahead of next year’s US presidential election. Musk took to X to announce that the team had been disbanded via a typically blunt statement.

Following the team cuts, a feature that allows users to report misinformation has also been removed from the X platform.

Musk acquired the platform last year for $44 billion, and his latest move raises fresh concerns about X’s ability to manage information and content surrounding important political events.

It follows a European Commission study published by TrustLab, which revealed that X has the highest ratio of misinformation spread across its content. The study analyzed content across six social media platforms – Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube, and X – that appeared in Poland, Slovakia, and Spain.

The cuts to X’s election integrity team saw more than half of the global team laid off. It’s uncertain how many people remain on the team. This includes the department based in Ireland where X’s Co-lead of 'threat disruption', Aaron Rodericks, was based.

Recently, X’s CEO Linda Yaccarino had told The Financial Times that the platform was “expanding the safety and election teams all around the world to focus on combating things like manipulation, surfacing of inauthentic accounts and closely monitoring the platform for any emerging threats”.

This came after Elon Musk suggested in a live-streamed interview that X could start charging all users "a small monthly payment" to use the app, beyond the existing Twitter Blue.

The feature that allowed users to report fake news on the platform has been absent since the release of the study. It was noticed by Reset Australia, an organization that campaigns for democracy in digital media, which addressed concerns in an open letter to X.

You can still report X posts that you consider to be spam and hateful; however, there’s currently no option to report electoral misinformation. In the build-up to the US Presidential election, other companies, including Google, have implemented plans to safeguard electoral information online, most recently in its move to eradicate AI deepfakes during the presidential race by enforcing AI transparency policies.

One of the most important factors when looking for a new laptop is battery life. Given power and performance is getting better with every generation, it might even be the most important. At the premium end of the market, high-end devices can be extremely versatile and powerful, but this usually comes at the cost of battery life, which can be a real inhibitor in the hybrid working age.

Starting from $1,999.99, this device isn’t just comparable to the best laptops out there, but it can even give Apple’s MacBook Pro a run for its money – based on the manufacturer’s claims.

Do claims around the Surface Laptop Studio 2 really stack up?

Few Windows devices can outpace the MacBook Pro on performance, let alone meet or exceed its battery life, thanks to the in-house M-series CPUs, like the M2 Ultra, Apple fits into them.

But not only does the Surface Laptop Studio 2 claim to outpace the latest MacBook Pro, it also has a staggering 18 hours maximum battery life, which Microsoft attained in controlled demos.

The MacBook Pro 14-inch (2023) lasts more than 19 hours on a single charge, by way of comparison.

This is a game changer: at last, a powerful high-end, possibly MacBook Pro killer, that can deliver high-end performance for close to a full day of usage. Or, at least, that’s what I thought until I read the find print.

Digging deeper, it seems thes “controlled demos” are more akin to a light jog than anywhere near the strenuous typical day-to-day activity any user would naturally put the Surface Laptop Studio 2 under.

Microsoft achieved this battery lifespan by employing a few tricks, including running the device at low brightness and “a portion of time with the device in use with idle applications”.

We cannot, with confidence, claim the Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio 2 has an 18-hour battery life, or anywhere close it, without putting the machine to the test ourselves.

Microsoft’s “controlled” conditions aren’t reflective of typical day-to-day usage, but we’ll be sure to verify this as soon as we can. Because, on paper at least, the Surface Laptop Studio 2 could well be a major entry into the premium market. Whether this works out in practice remains to be seen.

The infamous Xenomorph Android malware is back with new tools, and ready to steal more than just money from unsuspecting victims, experts have warned.

Cybersecurity researchers ThreatFabric, which has been monitoring the malware since early 2022, there is a new campaign active at the moment, targeting victims in the U.S., Canada, Spain, Italy, Portugal, and Belgium.

The infection chain is similar to what we’ve seen from Xenomorph in the past - the attackers set up phishing pages, “warning” victims that their Chrome browser needs to be updated and then delivering the malicious APK to the endpoint.

New distribution mechanism

Those that take the bait and install the APK will get an advanced version of Xenomorph, capable of stealing money from numerous banks, as well as cryptocurrencies from different wallets.

The malware does so by overlaying legitimate apps, and this time around, Xenomorph comes with approximately a hundred different overlays. The app chooses the right overlay, depending on the target demographic.

"This latest campaign also added plenty of financial institutions from the United States, together with multiple crypto-wallet applications, totaling more than 100 different targets per sample, each one using a specifically crafted overlay to steal precious PII from the victim's infected device," the researchers said in their technical writeup.

Xenomorph has endured countless changes throughout the years. The latest version comes with a couple of new features, including a way to mimic legitimate apps, simulating a tap on the screen, and making sure the smartphone doesn’t switch its screen off by keeping active notifications on at times.

The malware was first discovered in early 2022 when it was observed targeting users of 56 banks in Europe. Back then, it was being distributed via Google Play, and was downloaded more than 50,000 times. Since then, it was removed from Google’s repository and deployed via a dropper called “BugDrop”.

Around $200 million worth of cryptocurrencies has reportedly been stolen after the cloud service provider used by a cryptocurrency network was hacked.

The news was confirmed on Saturday by the victim - Mixin Network, which said in a Twitter thread that unnamed threat actors attacked the company’s cloud service providers and managed to steal the funds.

While the company suspended deposit and withdrawal services in response to the incident, transfers within the network are not affected.

Price reacts

Although Mixin did not specifically state which cloud provider it was using, it said it contacted Google, and blockchain security company Slow Mist, to assist with the investigation.

The company expects to reopen its services once the vulnerabilities used in this attack are discovered and remedied. Addressing the assets lost in the attack, the company said it would announce the solution “afterward”.

“We will try our best to minimize the losses and deeply apologize for this. Thank you, everyone, for your continuous support," the company added.

The network’s native token, XIN, dropped on the news, going from a high of $208 on the day before the incident to $189 after the news, representing a drop of roughly 9%. Even though cryptocurrencies are inherently volatile, 9% in a day is still a major decline.

Cryptocurrency networks and bridges are a popular target among cybercriminals. Even state-sponsored actors, such as Lazarus Group, often go for crypto projects and later use the stolen money to fund weapons programs and other cyberattack campaigns. Cryptocurrencies are also at the very center of every ransomware attack, as the threat actors exclusively demand ransom payments in digital currencies.

Quordle FAQs: Everything you need to know

What is Quordle?

Where Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day, Quordle presents you with four puzzles to solve. And rather than complete them in turn, you do so simultaneously. You get nine guesses, rather than the six for Wordle, but the rules are otherwise very similar.

It's played online via the Quordle website and you can also get to it via the Merriam-Webster site, after the dictionary purchased Quordle last year.

As with Wordle, the answers are the same for every player each day, meaning that you're competing against the rest of the world. And also as with Wordle, the puzzle resets at midnight so you have a fresh challenge each day.

The website also includes a practice mode - which I definitely recommend using before attempting the game proper! - and there are daily stats including a streak count. You also get Quordle Achievements - specific badges for winning a game in a certain number of turns, playing lots of times, or guessing particularly hard words.

Oh, and it's difficult. Really difficult.

What are the Quordle rules?

The rules of Quordle are almost identical to those of Wordle.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray…

4. …BUT the word you guess appears in all quadrants of the puzzle at the same time, so an A could turn green in one square, yellow in another and gray in the final two.

5. Answers are never plural.

6. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

7. Each guess must be a valid word in Quordle's dictionary. You can't guess ABCDE, for instance.

8. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses and there is no equivalent of Wordle's Hard mode.

9. You have nine guesses to find the Quordle answers.

10. You must complete the daily Quordle before midnight in your timezone.

What is a good Quordle strategy?

Quordle needs to be approached in a different way to Wordle. With four puzzles to solve in nine guesses, you can't blindly throw letters at it and expect to win - you'll stand a far better chance if you think strategically.

That's the case in Wordle too, of course, but it's even more important in Quordle.

There are two key things to remember.

1. Use several starting words

Firstly, you won't want just a single starting word, but almost certainly two or three starting words.

The first of these should probably be one of the best Wordle starting words, because the same things that make them work well will apply here too. But after that, you should select another word or possibly two that use up lots more of the most common consonants and that include any remaining vowels.

For instance, I currently use STARE > DOILY > PUNCH. Between them, these three words use 15 of the 26 letters in the alphabet including all five vowels, Y, and nine of the most common consonants (S, T, R, D, L, P, N, C and H). There are plenty of other options - you might want to get an M, B, F or G in there instead of the H, maybe - but something like that should do the trick.

If all goes well, that will give you a good lead on what one or sometimes two of the answers might be. If not, well good luck!

2. Narrow things down

Secondly, if you're faced with a word where the answer might easily be one of several options - for instance -ATCH, where it could be MATCH, BATCH, LATCH, CATCH, WATCH, HATCH or PATCH - you'll definitely want to guess a word that would narrow down those options.

In Wordle, you can instead try several of those in succession and hope one is right, assuming you have enough guesses left. It's risky, but will sometimes work. Plus, it's the only option in Hard mode. But in Quordle, this will almost certainly result in a failure - you simply don't have enough guesses.

Capcom had already confirmed that Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy is set to arrive on PC and Game Pass on September 26, but now we also have a firm release date for Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy – January 25, 2024 – and confirmation that a physical release is on the way, too.

At Tokyo Game Show this weekend, Capcom confirmed the trilogy – which bundles Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney, Phoenix Wright: Dual Destinies, and Phoenix Wright: Spirit Of Justice – will boast "beautiful HD graphics and special bonuses galore" and be coming to PS4/5, PC, Switch, and Xbox One and Series X/S, with physical editions available for Switch and PlayStation players.

The trilogy bundle includes a raft of special content, including the soundtracks for all three games plus 14 bonus tracks from Ace Attorney 15th Anniversary Orchestra Concert and the Ace Attorney 2019 Orchestra Concert, special episodes and costumes, an art library "chock full of character designs, background art, and even the special prologue anime for Spirit of Justice".

But perhaps most exciting of all is the animation studio, wherein players can "freely create the scene of your dreams with character models and animations, background music, and voiced lines from the games - all at your fingertips".

"Place characters in situations unthinkable in the main games!" Capcom teases.

There's also a raft of quality-of-life improvements, too, including a game menu that lets you pick the "the game, episode, and even chapter you'd like to start from the first time you play", plus a Story Mode in which the game will make selections and solve puzzles automatically to allow players to "simply sit back and watch a good mystery unfold".

Finally, the "backlog system" from Dual Destinies and Spirit of Justice that allowed you to review text you've already read has been added to Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy, allowing you to re-access lines you may have accidentally skipped.

"First released in 2001, the Ace Attorney series gave birth to the Courtroom Battle genre of text adventure games," Capcom explains on the official website.

"Phoenix Wright passes the torch on to Apollo Justice in this collection of 3 games, which traces Apollo's growth as a lawyer as he navigates the Dark Age of the Law."

Destiny 2 players – and its development team – have had it tough this week. Not only has the sci-fi shooter endured DDoS attacks that have taken the game down for hours at a time, but players have continued to experience connection errors and strange bugs and glitches over the weekend, too.

Beyond confirmation of maintenance over the weekend, developer Bungie has yet to formally comment on the issues plaguing players, but some have taken to Reddit and Destiny's social media channels to report a range of strange happenings, including doors that don't open, PvP scores that don't update, and even pacifist enemies that refuse to engage.

As u/Indecisive_um said on the Destiny subreddit earlier today, "the game is currently broken, it's not just you".

"If you're trying to use interactions but can't or doors aren't opening, don't worry, it's not you, it's everyone," Indecisive_um – just one of dozens of thread starters bringing attention to the current issues – wrote.

"It seems [...] something has broken big time with the game, and some of the following issues have popped up."

The thread then lists a handful of issues that players have reported today, including:

Doors are not opening for any activity including Savathun's Spire, Dungeons like Prophecy or Shattered Throne, and even the Helm.
Most, if not all, interactions are not working like the Chalice of Light in Crotas End, or the rally flag for public events.
Enemies are bugged out to the point that it seems they can't die, nor can they notice the player in any way.

"I'm sure there's more things going on that I haven't listed, but just wanted to put this out for anyone who may be wondering what's going on," the OP said. "In the meantime, it might be a good idea to play another game while Bungie tries to address the issue, or do what I'm doing and get a chance to look up close to some of these enemies in their natural habitat."

Whilst it seems that most issues have since been resolved – many suggest rebooting your system, particularly if you're in the midst of a heavy session – some players report issues still persisted after Bungie's background maintenance earlier today (thanks, PCGN).

Last week, Bungie announced plans to temporarily disable players from using crafted weapons in a bid to get on top of another in-game glitch.

After acknowledging that players could give Legendary guns Exotic traits – essentially circumventing the game's usual balance systems and allowing players to equip what is, in essence, three exotic weapons at once – Bungie confirmed that it's "working on two fixes" that it hopes will address the issue.

The first was a server-side update that will disable all crafted weapons from being equipped, after which the team will address "illegal" weapons by resetting them "to a default state".

Earlier this week, Bungie said this issue was "now resolved".

"Illegitimate frames and perks on crafted weapons have been replaced by legitimate ones. Please be advised that any players attempting to utilize the previous crafting exploit will receive a WEASEL error code and be kicked to the login screen."

It's happening, Star Wars fans – a third Star Wars Jedi game is in development.

Confirmation came not from development studio Respawn or publisher EA but Cal Kestis himself – or, more accurately, the man who gives Cal his face and voice.

Cameron Monaghan was talking at a recent panel at Ocala Comic Con and admitted during the interview that the team was "in the process" of making a "third" game (albeit acknowledging that much of this work seems to have chiefly been "conversations" for now rather than anything more concrete).

"We’re working on a third [game], and we’re in the process of doing that right now," Monaghan said during his panel (thanks, VGC).

"That's a big undertaking, and there have been some conversations so far, but hopefully, when all things are said and done, we’ll be able to go in and make something really cool."

Electronic Arts CEO Andrew Wilson recently hinted at new secret projects in development at Jedi Survivor developer, Respawn Entertainment.

During the recent Goldman Sachs Communacopia & Technology Conference, Wilson spoke about EA's success with acquiring Respawn and celebrated the studio's recent work on the Star Wars Jedi series and Apex Legends.

"We haven’t done that many acquisitions, we’ve done a few," Wilson said. "Respawn, of course, was maybe one of the most incredible acquisitions ever done in the industry".

"They’re an incredible team, and they’ve created incredible value for us, for our shareholders, and certainly for these global communities of players across Apex and the Jedi series. And you should imagine that there’s some other things going on at Respawn that we’re very excited about, that we’re not going to talk about but that we’re very excited about just given the quality of that group."

Could a third instalment of the Star Wars Jedi series be one of those "things going on" at Respawn? Watch this space… literally, in this case.

The first products using Nearlink – a revolutionary next-generation wireless protocol – are hitting the market, with Huawei leading the charge.

The company's Huawei Mate 60, MatePad Pro 13.2, and Freebuds Pro are among the first devices shipping with the Nearlink standard, which Huawei is championing as a much faster and more effective rival to Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

Announced at its HDC 2023 event in August, Nearlink works by making the most of existing wireless technologies, including Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, according to Huawei Central.

What Nearlink means for the future of mobile networks

The benefits include 60% less power consumption, six times the data transmission speeds, and they support roughly ten times the device connections.

The standard is designed to strip away latency (offering latency of 1/30th of a millisecond) while offering high bandwidth to boot.

Not only is Huawei loading its latest devices with Nearlink, but it’s also leading a consortium of 300 tech companies to build the standard – all Chinese apart from Mediatek and St Gobain – to integrate the standard into their products.

This group includes a broad range of companies from sectors such as automotive, AV, home appliances, as well as electronics, and they specifically include Lenovo, Hisense, Honor, among others.

No major US names including the likes of Intel, Qualcomm, AMD, or Nvidia, are included, leading to a very real possibility the technology could take off in China and leave the rest of the world behind.

There are, however, alternatives, including the ultra-wideband (UWB) technology Apple is developing for its devices, including the new iPhone 15 series.

Although the US has blacklisted Huawei, it remains a significant player in the global technology market.

A China-only wireless protocol built and developed only by Chinese companies – led by Huawei – may result in a parallel form of networking that’s impossible to peer into – especially when it comes to shaping how the standard improves over time, and what that means for users and businesses.

What is Quordle?

It's played online via the Quordle website and you can also get to it via the Merriam-Webster site, after the dictionary purchased Quordle last year.

Oh, and it's difficult. Really difficult.

What are the Quordle rules?

The rules of Quordle are almost identical to those of Wordle.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray…

4. …BUT the word you guess appears in all quadrants of the puzzle at the same time, so an A could turn green in one square, yellow in another and gray in the final two.

5. Answers are never plural.

6. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

7. Each guess must be a valid word in Quordle's dictionary. You can't guess ABCDE, for instance.

8. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses and there is no equivalent of Wordle's Hard mode.

9. You have nine guesses to find the Quordle answers.

10. You must complete the daily Quordle before midnight in your timezone.

What is a good Quordle strategy?

That's the case in Wordle too, of course, but it's even more important in Quordle.

There are two key things to remember.

1. Use several starting words

Firstly, you won't want just a single starting word, but almost certainly two or three starting words.

If all goes well, that will give you a good lead on what one or sometimes two of the answers might be. If not, well good luck!

2. Narrow things down

For the third day in a row, Payday 3 players are continuing to struggle to get online to play.

Earlier today, developer Starbreeze said that despite recent turbulence, "things are starting to look better", but players have reported throughout the day that matchmaking issues still persist, essentially preventing anyone from playing, even if they want to play alone.

It all started on September 21, when Payday 3 launched across PC and consoles. Although the first day of the early access period had a bit of a wobble, servers had mostly been okay, but the moment the game became available for all players – including those playing via Xbox Game Pass – matchmaking ceased, especially at peak times in Europe and the US.

"We're sorry to report that matchmaking is still unavailable, our team is working overtime to get this resolved," the team announced on social media on launch day.

"We realise that the matchmaking issues are frustrating, they are for us as well," Starbreeze later added. "We're still here and still working on getting you all back into the game, stay tuned."

Since then, however, servers only seem to stabilize when demand eases and most of the game's European and American player base give up and go to sleep.

However, the game's social channel and subreddit have been full of comments from unhappy gamers that they still can't connect via matchmaking – and the lucky few that do are getting kicked, too.

"I had to f*cking work like an adult the only time it was working, and now it's not working again. I've never seen such a piece of shit this is literally the new ET of gaming. Throw this shit in the landfill where it belongs," seethed one particularly unhappy player.

"You're right to complain about the server issues, it's unacceptable to still be having these issues so long after launch. You're also right that it should have had offline capabilities," agreed one conciliatory responder.

"But we all know the servers are going to be fixed, likely quite soon. So while the frustration is absolutely warranted, especially to those that cleared their schedules, were super hyped, etc. don't be an idiot and trash the entire game. We'll all be having proper heists soon."

At the time of writing, Starbreeze has not responded to reports of further server disruption.

Developer Starbreeze recently confirmed a jam-packed calendar of seasonal DLC content, outlining its plans for the next 12 months to keep players of the co-op action game well-fed for much of 2024.

Payday 3 is out now on PC (Steam/EGS), PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. Xbox Game Pass subscribers can also play for no additional cost, too.

"Payday 3 is a competently made and fairly polished heist-’em-up but while stealth gets an upgrade, the shooting is the same as its decade-old predecessor," we wrote in our 3/5 star Payday 3 review.

"Hitman-esque levels provide a nice distraction, but this feels like a foundation for Payday 3 as a live service game rather than a total product."

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 actor and voice artist Yuri Lowenthal has suggested that it's time for fans unhappy with Peter Parker's controversial face switch to "get over it".

Lowenthal's comment comes in an interview with ComicBook in which he discussed how he felt when a subset of fans revolted over Insomniac's decision to update the facial features of Marvel's Spider-Man's unmasked hero, Peter Parker, when the fan-favorite game was remastered in 2020.

The change – made to ensure the facial animations better matched Lowenthal's performance – caused quite the kerfuffle, revealing to Lowenthal how "connected emotionally" people can be to their favorite games and characters.

"The performance was the same for me," Lowenthal said. "I got over it as soon as they said, 'Hey, we wanna make this change so that the facial animation is better.' I said, 'I'm all in!' I don't care if he looks like a goblin – if my performance is better, then I'm in."

After admitting that he was "kind of tired of talking about", Lowenthal acknowledged that "some people will never get over it", but added that there had been some good to have come out of the situation, too.

"The one positive thing I take away from this experience is that people connected emotionally so hard and so deeply in the first game that they're mad when they feel that person changes," Lowenthal concluded. "I can only be so mad about that because it worked, not the change thing, but you connected with the character, which is great. Now, get over it!"

Developer Insomniac Games recently announced that Marvel's Spider-Man 2 has gone gold, reaching a launch-ready state ahead of its release on October 20 PS5 release.

At Cat helpfully summarized for us at the time, for those not in the know, "going gold" is a game industry term, meaning that the game is "finished" as far as the development cycle is concerned. This doesn't mean that Insomniac might not tweak and polish the game in the meantime, but it does mean that, if the game were released tomorrow, it would be in a launch-friendly state.

One of this year's most anticipated upcoming games, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is set to follow on from the original Marvel's Spider-Man and its sequel Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Both offered thrilling, well-paced action-adventure romps full of the great set-piece battles and gripping interpersonal drama for which great Spider-Man stories are known.

If you bought an iPhone 15 series device today and you've been having trouble getting your phone set up, you're not alone, but there's good news. Apple has issued its first software update for iOS 17, and it fixes problems with the iPhone 15 transferring data from older devices.

If you have an older iPhone, go to the Settings app and select the General settings options. Then choose the Software Update. If you are part of the Beta Updates program, you may need to turn beta updates off in order to receive this update.

If your phone is running iOS 17, you should update immediately to either iOS 17.0.1 or iOS 17.0.2 if you plan on buying a new iPhone 15, or if you are transferring data between two iPhones. If your phone isn't running iOS 17, and it's less than five years old, it really should be, because the new system is very good. You can read our iOS 17 review.

Problems on launch day are nothing new to Apple or its fans, not if you have a long enough iPhone history to remember. These problems tend to pop up on day one because, I'm guessing, more people activate a brand-new phone today than almost any other day of the year.

We've seen issues come and go, but never anything worth returning an iPhone over. If you have a new phone and you're having trouble transferring data from your old iPhone, try updating the phone first to see if Apple has given you a fix.

Yes, it even happened to me, but Apple fixed it

I got my iPhone 15 Pro Max today and was having trouble setting it up with my iPhone 14 Pro right when this update hit. I was expecting my iPhone 15 Pro Max to simply find my older iPhone. Bluetooth was turned on, as Apple suggests. Still, nothing was happening.

My colleagues pinged the group Slack with news about the update, and I immediately updated my older phone. Though some folks have seen iOS 17.0.2 available, my phone only needed to update to iOS 17.0.1 to get things working properly.

As soon as my iPhone 14 Pro had restarted, my new iPhone 15 Pro Max found it immediately. I took a photo of the onscreen pattern, part of the transfer process, and the Pro Max asked for a software update, right away. It was not a short update period, it took more than fifteen minutes to complete.

Once this was done, the entire process restarted. I needed to find my iPhone 14 Pro again, but this time, the new Pro Max had no trouble. It found my phone and copied all of my settings, and the two phones are currently in the process of sharing all of my data, wirelessly. My new Pro Max says this should take 55 minutes for my two 256GB phones.

Your different options for transferring iPhone data

If you are transferring data between iPhones today, Apple gives you a few options and the fastest will depend on what you want to do next.

If you want to start using your iPhone right away, you can download a backup copy of your older iPhone from iCloud. This download happens in the background so you can start using many of your iPhone's features right away. Unfortunately, you can't use everything, including your App Store apps, until they have downloaded.

If you want to get your iPhone completely set up with all of its apps as quickly as possible, you can transfer directly from one iPhone to the other. Neither iPhone will be usable at all while this transfer happens, and it can take up to an hour or longer, depending on how much you have stored on your phone. If you take a lot of videos or play huge games, be prepared to wait a long time.

The final option is to back up your iPhone to your Mac computer, then simply plug in your new iPhone to your Mac. Your computer should recognize the new phone and help you restore your backup to the new device. This is a great option for the new USB-C iPhone 15 Pro, especially.

Unfortunately, Apple doesn't suggest this third option on the iPhone 15 welcome screen, and I totally forgot that I could use that faster backup option before I started my two iPhones talking to each other. Now I need to wait ... another thirty minutes, at least.

Setting up

The report details the process of setting up the mobile device. Upon connecting your Pixel, a new “Webcam” option will appear in the USB Preferences menu. Selecting it launches a notification titled “Device as Webcam”. Tapping said notification opens an app where you can preview the video feed and make tweaks to it.

The tech does seem to work with third-party software like Zoom and Google Meet. You should see “Android Camera” pop up on those apps. Clicking that connects the Pixel to the software.

There are some important restrictions regarding this feature. Industry insider Mishaal Rahman stated on X (formerly known as Twitter) that it only works with the Pixel 6 or Pixel 7 lines. Also, you can’t use the telephoto lens on the Pixel 7 Pro. It's not supported. Interestingly, Rahman claims this functionality will not be exclusive to Google Pixel as his sources state it will be a “part of Android 14’s source code”.

Notable inclusions

It’s unknown when Android 14 will launch. The prevailing theory currently is the date is set for sometime in October to coincide with the release of the Pixel 8. If you’re interested in trying out the webcam tool and more, you can head on over to the Android beta program on Google’s website, check if you have an eligible device, and then sign up.

Even if you don’t own a Pixel 6 or Pixel 7 model, that’s okay because there is more to the beta. For instance, you can try out the “new lock screen clock” sporting a “Metro” style. The App Pair saving tool from earlier this year is now fully functional. Additionally, the Pixel Launcher has an “Edit Home Screen” button letting you move widgets “without having to constantly reselect stuff”.

The beta is certainly an interesting update. However, we can’t help but feel a little disappointed. It feels like Android is simply trying to catch up to iOS. If you look at the rest of the features Android 14 is slated to get, many of them are already on iPhones like full support for passkeys and satellite communication. There’s nothing wrong with these, but we were hoping for more. Something that would give Android an edge.

YouTube has announced a whole bunch of AI-powered tools (on top of its existing bits and pieces) that are designed to make life easier for content creators on the platform.

As The Verge spotted, at the ‘Made on YouTube’ event which just took place, one of the big AI revelations made was something called ‘Dream Screen’, an image and video generation facility for YouTube Shorts.

This lets a video creator just type in something that they’d like for a background. Such as, for example, a panda drinking a cup of coffee – given that request, the AI will take the reins and produce such a video background for the clip (or image).

This is how the process will be implemented to begin with – you prompt the AI, and it makes something for you – but eventually, creators will be able to remix content to produce something new, we’re told.

YouTube Studio is also getting an infusion of AI tools that will suggest content that could be made by individual creators, generating topic ideas for videos that might suit them, based on what’s trending with viewers interested in the kind of content that creator normally deals in.

A system of AI-powered music recommendations will also come into play to furnish audio for any given video.

Analysis: Grab the shovel?

Is it us, or does this sound rather scary? Okay, so content creators may find it useful and convenient to be able to drop in AI generated video or image backgrounds really quickly, and have some music layered on top, and so on.

But isn’t this going to just ensure a whole heap of bland – and perhaps homogenous – content flooding onto YouTube? That seems the obvious danger, and maybe one compounded by the broader idea of suggested content that people want to see (according to the great YouTube algorithm) being provided to creators on YouTube.

Is YouTube set to become a video platform groaning under the collective weight of content that gets quickly put together, thanks to AI tools, and shoveled out by the half-ton?

While YouTube seems highly excited about all these new AI utilities and tools, we can’t help but think it’s the beginning of the end for the video site – at least when it comes to meaningful, not generic, content.

We hope we’re wrong, but this whole brave new direction fills us with trepidation more than anything else. A tidal wave of AI-generated this, that, and the other, eclipsing everything else is clearly a prospect that should be heavily guarded against.
